RIGHT TO LIFE

Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?

I oppose abortion. My life began as the result of an unplanned pregnancy, and I’m thankful my birth mother chose life. As an adopted child, I have deeply personal perspective on the value of human life: I was born on Valentine’s Day and was welcomed into my new family the day after I was born. Because of my birth mother’s brave decision, I’ve had the opportunity to experience the joys and challenges of life, raise a family, know the great love my Savior, and I hope in turn to have impacted the lives of others. I believe that all unborn children should have those same opportunities. This past legislative session, I joint-authored and passed the Texas Heartbeat Act, which prohibits an abortion after a fetal heartbeat is present. I also authored and passed the Human Life Protection Act which will automatically end abortion in Texas if the U.S. Supreme Court overturns the Roe v Wade decision from 1973. The Court has taken up a case from Mississippi this term that they will likely rule on in June 2022 and I praying that the Court overturns the Roe v Wade decision.

ECONOMY

What changes, if any, should be made to the tax code?

Property taxes in Texas are too high and burdensome. I have voted for and supported legislation during my first two sessions in the Senate to reduce property taxes and empower taxpayers in making decisions at the local level in terms of local governments setting tax rates. I support continuing to reduce property taxes across the board and one of my goals is to systematically reduce school district property taxes and eventually eliminate that portion of the tax.

What government spending would you reduce in order to balance the budget?

I have voted on two responsible budgets that meet the needs of Texans during my two sessions in office and, though the process, these budgets have also provided for property tax relief. I support a zero-based budget approach to the state appropriations process so each agency and each expenditure can be scrutinized for the need, impact to constituents, and ways to reshape the program to reduce overall spending. I am a member of the Sunset Advisory Commission and each of the agencies we review undergo a simultaneous zero-based budget to look at each aspect of the agency and its associated funding for effectiveness and cost saving opportunities. During the 87th legislative session, I joint-authored Senate Bill 1336 which limits the future growth of the state budget to population growth adjusted for inflation. This limitation in future years will require legislators to develop leaner state budgets. Federal funds are a definite place to look for budget reductions as many of the federal funds have regulations attached, are one-time expenditures, or are for programs that Texas may not want to pursue.

Under what circumstances can government close churches?

The government should not have the authority to close churches and I opposed the executive orders that closed churches. This past legislative session, in response to the coronavirus public health emergency in which executive orders were used to close and limit occupational capacities of churches and businesses, I authored Senate Bill 26, which was passed into law as House Bill 1239, to extend the protection of religious freedoms allowed to individuals to places of worship. The voters in November 2021 approved a constitutional amendment in Proposition 4 that constitutionally prohibits the government from closing churches. This constitutional amendment, which I co-authored, was passed by the Legislature in 2021.

HEALTHCARE

What most closely matches your view on healthcare: A) Healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare option. (includes "universal healthcare," "medicare for all," etc.) B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options. C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary. D)Tax-payer funded health care should be abolished in all forms, and Medicaid and Medicare should be de-funded.

I am a combination of C and D. In an ideal world, the government should not be a provider in the marketplace. The role of government is to provide regulation so that providers know the ground rules for marketplace engagement and enforcement to punish fraudulent actors. The government, as a regulator, should not also be a health care provider. There is fraud, waste, and abuse in Medicaid and Medicare due to providers seeking federal money without providing adequate or accurate services. Many providers also do not accept Medicaid as there are many regulations attached that may interfere with the doctor-patient relationship. Practically, many Americans rely on Medicaid and Medicare, so I support phasing out and replacing these government programs with private and charitable options.

Under what circumstances (if any) should a government, school, or employer be allowed to require vaccinations?

I am opposed to the government coercing the COVID-19 vaccine. I have publicly called on Governor Abbott to call a fourth special session to address the issue of prohibiting COVID-19 vaccines and employer vaccine mandates. I am pleased the U.S. Supreme Court recently overturned the Biden employer mandate and I will keep working to oppose this mandate on health care workers, too.

NATIONAL SECURITY

What should the United States do to help eradicate the threat of Islamic terrorism?

President Trump made major inroads in foreign policy in the Middle East with the Abraham Accords and peace negotiations. The United States needs to continue to show leadership and strength in foreign relations to reduce terrorist threats. President Biden’s withdrawal from Afghanistan was heartbreaking as many Americans and peaceful Afghans died as a result of radical organizations now taking over the country and this is an example of failed leadership.

The U.S. should do more to physically secure the southern border.

Strongly Agree

The U.S. should do more to physically secure the southern border.

Strongly Agree

Who should be allowed to immigrate to the U.S. and under what circumstances?

I support legal immigration, but not illegal immigration. I voted to increase border security funding at the state level to combat illegal immigration and border crimes and I support building the wall on our international border. Congress has not acted, so Texas must. The remain in Mexico policy must be enforced.

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

I am a Christian. I accepted Christ and was baptized as an 8-year old girl. I believe that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God, and the habit of daily interaction with Scripture coupled with prayer informs and directs my relationships and daily decisions. I embrace the teachings of Jesus, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. He taught us that the two greatest commandments are first to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength and second to love our neighbor as ourselves, and I seek to treat others with the dignity due those who are made in the image of God. I believe every human life is sacred and has meaning and purpose, regardless of the “quality” that life may be ascribed by others.

ELECTIONS AND VOTING

People should be able to vote without photo identification.

Strongly Disagree

What laws would you propose to change present voting practices?

Senate Bill 1 created greatly improved election processes by prohibiting drop boxes, requiring voter ID for mail-in ballots, and defining and punishing vote harvesting. The legislature should implement laws and process improvements to correct loopholes that are discovered by the forensic audit. Recently, the Court of Criminal Appeals ruled that the Office of the Attorney General does not have legal jurisdiction over statewide investigation and prosecution of voter fraud cases, even though the legislature granted this jurisdiction a number of decades ago. If the court ruling is not overturned on appeal, then the legislature must address the prosecution of voter fraud and illegal voting. I oppose the activist action of this court.

EQUALITY

Is racism a threat to domestic security in the United States? Why or why not?

Identity politics is wide-spread now. Instead of living as Americans, we are instead noticing our differences and making policy decisions based on differences instead of our commonalities. I believe people acting on their hatred, for whatever reason they hate somebody, is a threat to public safety and that those who instigate racial unrest should be held accountable for their damages. Defunding police departments is not an option.

ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT

Which comes closest to your view? A) Stricter environmental laws and regulations cost too many jobs and hurt the economy. B) Stricter environmental laws and regulations are worth the cost.

“A” best matches my view. Stricter environmental law and regulations cost too many jobs and hurt the economy. Texas must continue to lead the nation in oil and gas production and we must regain energy independence. We also need to make sure Texas school children understand the positive significance and impact of this industry on the economy and state budget for Texas.

ABOUT YOU

What do you think is the general purpose of government?

Our founding documents clearly lay out that it is the purpose of government to protect individual liberties, our God-given inalienable rights. That is to be accomplished through limited government. In his classic work, The Wealth of Nations, Adam Smith outlines the role of government as providing for education, infrastructure, public safety and a fair judicial system. He sees limiting government action to these “lanes” as the structure that best supports a free market economy. I think that still holds true today. Government isn’t a thing; it’s people, and it takes all of us doing our part to make it work the way it is intended – of the people, by the people and for the people.

No

What else would you like voters to know about you, including your legislative priorities?

I describe my job as a State Senator in 3 words: Listen, Learn, Lead. My focus is keeping our future free. As a former educator with over 20 years of experience in K-12 education, I strongly believe that preserving the rich history of our nation, teaching the United States Constitution, and sharing the importance of the uniqueness of our Republic with Texas students is of the utmost importance. I want to continue the work I began when I was first elected in 2018. I have a record of conservative victories in the Senate over the last two sessions and we have achieved many important goals. There is still unfinished business in advancing our conservative principles and in ensuring that our future remains free for the next generation of Texans. My priorities for legislation are: • End abortion • Protect and preserve our freedoms. This is an umbrella action and includes the individual freedoms of medical and educational decision-making in addition to border security, election integrity, freedom to worship, free speech, and reducing/eliminating property taxes.
