Understanding Right to Life

The very first right listed in our nation’s Declaration of Independence is the right to life, a right firmly rooted in the Judeo-Christian standards of morality upon which the United States of America was founded. However, this foundational right has come under increasing attacks in recent years, and even though Roe v. Wade—the original Supreme Court case which removed the right to life for unborn Americans by legalizing abortion—has been overturned, that doesn’t mean the enemies of life will stop trying to eliminate this fundamental right. Understanding the right to life—and where the candidates on your ballot align—is essential to voting wisely.

Where does the Bible stand?

The Bible teaches that all life is sacred from conception to natural death. God knows those who are in the womb. Psalm 139 reminds us that: “You knit me in my mother’s womb” and “my frame was known to you when I was made in secret.” Psalm 22 says, “You have been my guide since I was first formed.” Psalm 51:5 shows that the preborn child is already created in God’s image.

"For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well." (Psalms 139:13-14 ESV)

Where do the parties stand?

REPUBLICAN PARTY PLATFORM

  • "We proudly stand for families and Life. We believe that the 14th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States guarantees that no person can be denied Life or Liberty without Due Process, and that the States are, therefore, free to pass Laws protecting those Rights. After 51 years . . . that power has been given to the States and to a vote of the People. We will oppose Late Term Abortion, while supporting mothers and policies that advance Prenatal Care, access to Birth Control, and IVF (fertility treatments)." (pg. 20)

DEMOCRATIC PARTY PLATFORM

  • [Democrats are committed to] "protecting access to abortion, including by creating a new path for pharmacies to dispense FDA-approved medication abortion and defending access in court. It is expanding reproductive health care for service members, veterans, and their family members." (pg. 49)
  • "Democrats are committed to restoring the reproductive rights Trump ripped away. With a Democratic Congress, we will pass national legislation to make Roe the law of the land again. We will strengthen access to contraception so every woman who needs it is able to get and afford it. We will protect a woman’s right to access IVF. We will repeal the Hyde Amendment. [We] will continue to support access to FDA-approved medication abortion, appoint leaders at the FDA who respect science, and appoint judges who uphold fundamental freedoms." (pg. 50)
