What is the best way to bring down unemployment?
A robust economy that is not over-regulated but it is not really robust if the middle class and the working class of people are paid too little. It is not robust if people have to work two or three jobs in order to survive. People will continue to work longer for an employer if their pay and benefits are at least satisfactory. Therefore, a minimum wage increase is in order. Recent research has found that the number of jobs lost from such an increase is offset by jobs gained at a slightly higher wage level. In this country we have six million jobs that need to be filled. Our country would be stronger, and there would be less unemployment, if our educational systems were stronger and our education-to-work programs were more intentional. Apprentice programs are especially good. Illegal immigration also undercuts the opportunities for citizens some places. Competition is also important so observing anti-trust laws is still a relevant concept to insure competitiveness.

How would you promote healthcare coverage that is adequate, affordable and accessible for all?
Employer-based plans are especially good because they are linked to employment. Preventative healthcare should be available for all for a nominal amount. Medicare largely has this benefit. Healthcare coverage is so expensive because of the rates charged by doctors and especially hospitals - they have the insurance rate and the non-insurance rate. If our medical schools were not so expensive, these rates could decrease. For hospitals, so much of the expense is in emergency rooms populated in many cases by indigent and addicted people. These folks can be handled in clinics for the most part. I would also link a person's use of prevention (no smoking, taking screening tests) to lower insurance rates. The cost of drugs is a big driver of costs as well. I would rather pay pharmaceutical companies for their research than allow the exorbitant prices they charge for drugs. Drugs from outside our borders can bring down costs.

I believe in God, the mandate from Jesus - "Love God above all else and your neighbor as yourself." I believe in the virtues of faith, hope, and charity, and the greatest of these is charity. To me that means we seek all ways to settle problems and disputes before using violence, although we have the right to legitimate self-defense. I am not a pacifist because there is justifiable violence, including as part of national defense. Others may have different religious views than mine. I pray that they find the truth but I embrace the fact that they are believers. I reject all forms of hate because hate directly contravenes the mandate for love.

Opposition to abortion - I am a leader of our pro-life group in our parish in Falls Church (Saint Anthony's of Padua) and in our Council of the Knights of Columbus. Support of religious freedom. Opposition to legalization of marijuana. Support of reasonable taxes. All of the above I have championed in three previous political campaigns - for the U.S. Senate in 2012 (did not get on the ballot), State Delegate in 2013, State Senate in 2015.

By that I mean that my experience of growing up in a lower middle class and tough neighborhood environment, along with working lower wage jobs, and also going to Georgetown U., being a Subcommittee Staff Director on Capitol Hill, a nonprofit manager and CEO of national crime prevention programs, an Army officer 19 months in a combat zone (Vietnam), and a community leader as an officer of my condo association, a pro-life leader in my parish, a member of the national Border Patrol Foundation - all these lead me to understand the problems of people at all levels while having exercised program and policy responsibilities. I live in a very diverse community not - I love that and hope to represent "the people." I read widely and my friends are at all levels of society. It is worth noting that I was close to issues on Capitol hill not only for the eight years I worked there but many other years as a nonprofit leader.

I always try to give 100% and people have said I am the hardest working person they have ever known and some have said I am too honest for my own good. For me the end does not justify the means. I believe that I can maintain my principles while having a relationship with my colleagues that leads to accomplishment. In several of the choice questions above, for example, on the right to life, I chose agree rather than strongly agree. Why? Because I might strongly agree, for example, on protection for life from conception on, but a law must be able to be implemented uniformly and fairly. It would be darn tough to do that from the day of conception.
