What in the nature of mankind caused America’s Founders to carefully define, separate, and limit powers in the Constitution?

Mankind in imperfect. Lord Acton's phrase is powerful - "Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." Thus, our system reflects a series of checks and balances to power that limit the power of each branch of government. Underlying this system is a vigilant public to speak out against the usurpation of power but also a public, and political leaders, who will exercise restraint so that there can be the communication to resolve problems and serve the common good.

Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?

To save the life of the mother. People ask about the issues of incest and rape. I tell them that these are tragic and traumatic for the victim, but the new life that was created is just as human as you or me.

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

I go back to the catechism - our purpose in life is to know, love, and serve God in this world and be with him in the next. Every day is a day in which we should strive to act in his image - our best example of such conduct is Jesus Christ, God on Earth. While God is all-powerful he has given us free will to accept or reject his precepts. Mankind frequently takes the wrong path, but our command is to continue to do the right thing, even when it is a disadvantage or unpopular. The salvation of our souls is dependent on faith and good works. Our daily life is best led by the Golden Rule - "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." It's a great description for a wonderful world. Finally, while our spiritual values differ, they should not only be tolerated but understood, but when religion is used as a facade for murder, rape, and extortion, that must be fought fiercely.
