I remember one Memorial Day vividly…

As you enjoy the long weekend with friends and family, take time to pause and remember what this day is all about.

With a son-in-law in the military, my family tries to commemorate Memorial Day in a way that reminds us of the ultimate sacrifice made by so many service men and women. Few things have impacted me as much as the ceremony at Omaha Beach in Normandy, France, which I was privileged to attend several years ago.

My daughter and I stood in the crowd, the sound of taps sending chills down our spines as we watched the American flag slowly being raised from half-staff. I’m thankful to have captured that solemn moment on video.

In gratitude for the over 9,000 American soldiers who died that day, the mayors of French cities and towns that had been liberated participated in the wreath-laying ceremony.

They knew that their freedom had been purchased by the sacrifice of these men, and the ocean of white crosses and Stars of David is a stunning reminder of the cost.

Our nation exists today because of our service men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice. Without their willingness to lay down their lives, the principles upon which America was founded—freedom, equality, justice—would never have become anything more than ideals.

And without a continued willingness by each generation to give everything for the cause of liberty, these blessed principles will slip from being a reality to once again becoming only ideals.

Today, I ask you to pray for all who serve our country. They are under attack both physically and spiritually. Thank God for them, and ask for His protection, courage, and guidance for them and their families.

They deserve our prayers for perseverance, healing, and hope.

Please say a special prayer for the loved ones of those who have given their lives in service to our country. We owe them our deepest gratitude. May God give them healing and comfort on this day of remembrance.

Lastly, pray for a renewed resolve to honor their memory and carry on their work. As Abraham Lincoln said,

“It is for us the living, … to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us, that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion”.

May God bless you on this Memorial Day.
