OTHER INFORMATION

QUESTIONNAIRE

RIGHT TO LIFE

Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not be a resource for instruction or services in the school.

Neutral

Resources should come from refereed scholarly sources or .edu or .gov sources

Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?

If a child is pregnant, if it is a result of incest, if a woman has been raped, if she chooses in order to save her own health or mental stability, since it is her body and her privacy, but particularly if the life of the mother is in danger

ECONOMY

It is the government’s responsibility to ensure everyone has a livable income.

Neutral

I believe that it is to the benefit of everyone to make sure that people who are capable of working should be able to make a living. If a person is disabled or othrwise unable to work, society should provide a way to live. Women should be provided with support for the first year of a child's life, as it is in all other industrialized nations around the world, along with many poor nations.

What is your position on government funding of public education from Pre-K through college?

We should fully fund public education, since it is beneficial to the entire society to have an educated populace. We should try to make sure that teachers can make a living and have a proper retirement.

RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

Governments should define marriage as between one man and one woman; no other definition of marriage should be legalized or supported with taxpayer or public funds.

Strongly Disagree

The Ten Commandments should not be displayed in public school buildings or court houses.

Strongly Agree

At school, students should be able to speak freely and civilly about matters of conscience and faith, including Christianity.

Strongly Agree

NATIONAL SECURITY

The best way to maintain peace is through a strong military.

Neutral

EDUCATION

Every state should mandate K-12 standardized tests and the use of teaching software which aligns with Common Core standards.

Strongly Disagree

There is far too much emphasis on standardized tests. Common core was designed to help teachers, not to punish them or their students. Standardized testing run by the state is done for profit, not for formative purposes. We should go back to Iowa Skills test, which is the gold standard for achievement, but it should not be the basis for students to pass or fail a grade or to punish teachers or schools.

Parents are the ultimate authority in their child’s education and should be able to freely pursue whatever educational options they deem best for their child.

Strongly Agree

Before students are taught courses such as Comprehensive Sex Ed (CSE) or Social Emotional Learning (SEL), they must opt-in with written parental permission.

Strongly Disagree

Sex education used to be a normal part of education in the United States, and it still is in most industrialized countries. Studies worldwide indicate that comprehensive sex education results in fewer unintended pregnancies, later age of having intercourse, fewer sexually transmitted diseases, and a healthier attitude toward sex, less use of or addiction to pornography, etc. Social and Emotional Learning is a program that helps students manage their emotions and get along with peers & teachers

I support the teaching of curricula (such as the 1619 Project, No Place for Hate, Second Step, etc.) that emphasizes slavery and racism as the foundation of American history.

Neutral

I support teaching facts and a variety of viewpoints, not censoring or whitewashing history. From an economic perspective, slavery was an important part of our nation's history, and it almost destroyed our national unity during the civil war. We continue to suffer from the damage done by the institution of slavery and its after-effects, and we would benefit from an education that looks squarely at the facts of history, just as Germany does with World War II, or South Africa does with apartheid.

VALUES

Judeo-Christian values established a framework of morality that is necessary for our system of limited government.

Neutral

I'm not sure that I see a necessary connection between Judeo-Christian values and a system of limited government. We were founded on separation of church and state, and many colonists came to North America to escape religious persecution, so we should not try to have a state religion. We're not Israel. Most modern nations now have universal freedom of religion; those that impose a religion people are subject to oppression and wars as a result. Our morality evolved toward more equality & freedom

I support allowing public high school students to participate in athletic competition based on the gender with which they identify instead of biological sex.

Strongly Agree

A tiny fraction of students are gender non-binary or have gender dysphoria, a condition that is not a "choice." Research indicates that the percentage has changed of recent decades: Below see percentages that are straight LBGT or No opinion, by generation. Generation Z (born 1997-2002) 15.9 78.9 5.2 Millennials (born 1981-1996) 9.1 82.7 8.1 Generation X (born 1965-1980) 3.8 88.6 7.6 Baby boomers (born 1946-1964) 2.0 91.1 6.9 Traditionalists (born before 1946) 1.3 89.9 8.9

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

I believe that as humans we seek truth and spiritual guidance. I minored in religion as an undergraduate, so I studied a variety of religious traditions, and I gleaned important ideas from every tradition. I was raised as a Presbyterian, but I also attended churches with friends, including Church of Christ, Mennonite, Lutheran, Catholic, Baptist, and Jewish. I studied all of the world's major religions, and my value system is based on education and openness to new ideas and information. I believe, as my parents used to say, that God helps those who help themselves, but they also believed that if you only help yourself, you're not much of a human being. I have given my life to service in the teaching profession, because i believe the quest for knowledge is the one spiritual value that all humans share, regardless of the specific faith tradition in which they are raised. I would like to see the various world communities learn about each other, communicate effectively with each other, and cooperate to save our endangered planet. I want more than anything to rescue life on our planet, which humanity is in the process of destroying because of greed and ignorance. I teach to save the world and life on our planet.

No healthcare diagnosis or treatment, whether mental, reproductive, or otherwise, should be given to a child without first receiving written consent from the parent.

Strongly Agree

ABOUT YOU

When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?

Moderate

I find that I agree with a wide variety of people on a number of issues, and although I am a Democrat, I am also often able to find some common ground with conservatives. I think that only looking at a few hot-button issues is not an effective way to make progress, so I am always seeking common ground and looking to find a point of agreement and make progress on that particular issue. I enjoy being with people who aren't like me, so I'm glad to be on SBOE and learn about fellow members.

I am dedicated to education, and I do my research. I will always listen to anyone who calls me and wants to tell me their views. I may not agree with everything someone says, but I will listen and take their views into consideration. I will always do what I believe is best for all the students in Texas.

2ND AMENDMENT

Teachers who are licensed to carry should be allowed to carry guns at school.

Neutral

OTHER IMPORTANT ISSUES

Do you support mandatory vaccinations for children attending public school?

yes, with medical exceptions

I support mask mandates.

Neutral

In the height of the pandemic, I support mask mandates, but I also believe that current conditions should be taken into consideration.
