QUESTIONNAIRE
RIGHT TO LIFE
Human life begins at conception and deserves legal protection at every stage until natural death.
No Answer
Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?
Abortion is legal and it should be determined by the woman and her physician, not by each individual state or other individuals. If the law is changed at the national level or a determination of the Supreme Court, then individuals should follow the law.
ECONOMY
It is the government’s responsibility to ensure everyone has a livable income.
Neutral
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
Governments should not discriminate against individuals, organizations or small businesses because of their belief that marriage is only a union of one man and one woman.
Neutral
Governments should define marriage as between one man and one woman; no other definition of marriage should be legalized or supported with taxpayer or public funds.
Strongly Disagree
Religious liberty is at risk in the United States and deserves the highest level of protection in the law.
Agree
The Ten Commandments should not be displayed in public school buildings or court houses.
Agree
I promise to protect the freedom of Christians to share the Gospel and to practice Biblical principles.
Yes
What does "separation of church and state" mean to you?
The separation of church and state is one of our nation's basic principles, established in order to prevent persecution of members of any religion. A number of people who came to these shores were escaping religious persecution, and George Washington, for example, defended Judaism. Among our founding fathers were all shades of belief and disbelief, and Benjamin Franklin even used the Iriquois religious and governmental model to help the new colonies develop the federation of states. The only difference was that the Iriquois had a house of females and a house of males, because they believed in gender equality, whereas the U.S. model did not include women. Most modern nation states have a secular state in order to avoid religious factions going to war or privileging a particular group. Many conflicts in the world are conducted by nations that have a state religion. I am therefore a strong believer in separation of church and state. Individuals should be free to decide religious beliefs.
NATIONAL SECURITY
The best way to maintain peace is through a strong military.
Neutral
EDUCATION
The federal government should mandate standards and requirements (such as Common Core) for local schools.
Neutral
Taxpayer-funded public education should be guaranteed through college.
Agree
I support school choice, including voucher programs, tax credits, charter schools, private schools, and home schools.
Neutral
VALUES
Judeo-Christian values established a framework of morality which is necessary for our system of limited government.
Neutral
I support adding sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression as protected classes in non-discrimination laws.
Strongly Agree
Promotion of the LGBT agenda in public schools, including teaching of “sexual orientation” and “gender identity”, is completely inappropriate and should be opposed at the state and local level.
Strongly Disagree
I support allowing public high school students to participate in athletic competition based on the gender with which they identify instead of biological sex.
Neutral
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
I believe that we should value life, along the lines of George Bernard Shaw viewed as the Life Force seeking to comprehend itself. I contemplate the nature of my existence and values for hours on end every day, and I research the greatest thinkers, both religious and non-religious to deepen my thinking. I was a religion minor in college, so I studies all of the major religions, and I have done a number of workshops to use the best of all religious traditions to improve my mode of being in the world. I do meditation, I practice the generous tradition of giving from the Christian and Muslim traditions, I value the Hebraic Talmudic practice of scholarship, I practice yoga, breathing and relaxation techniques and I constantly strive to be a force for good in the world. I remember my parents saying that "the lord helps those who help themselves." I fear that a lot of people have forgotten true Christian value and interpret "help themselves" as a gospel of wealth. I believe in love.

No
Is there anything else you would like voters to know about you?
As a mother of two graduates of Texas public schools and a teacher at Texas State University, I want to restore respect for teachers and public schools. Texas students need to learn the most advanced science, technology, literature, art, music, and social studies. We need a change. We need educators, not politicians, on the State Board of Education, to give our students a 21st century education for our economy and our future. We need a board that provides leadership, not an outdated curriculum and more expensive high-stakes testing that wastes taxpayer money, frustrates teachers, administrators, parents, and, above all, students. Students learn from teachers who have a strong scholarly background, an engaging curriculum and the best available textbooks. Students need tools for research, civil discourse, and methods to determine their own beliefs; these should not be dictated by teachers or schools.
