Separation of church and state” means that the government cannot establish or control a religion, and churches should not run the government. It does not mean that people of faith must leave their values at the door or be excluded from the public square. Americans are free to live out their beliefs, speak openly, and participate fully in civic life without government interference.

Protecting freedom of conscience and religious liberty is a core constitutional principle, and no one should be compelled to act against deeply held beliefs to participate in society or earn a living.

However, I do support hospitals and medical providers using secure, limited databases to improve patient care and help prevent prescription drug abuse by allowing doctors to see what medications have already been prescribed. I support allowing the expansion of gambling in our state because, under current law, Texans are spending billions of dollars gambling in neighboring states instead of keeping that economic activity at home. Estimates suggest Texans wager as much as $8 billion annually outside the state and that Texas loses an estimated ~$300 million in potential tax revenue to other states like Louisiana, Oklahoma, and New Mexico by not offering legal gambling options.

I grew up in the Church of Christ, where my father was a preacher, and that upbringing instilled in me a strong sense of service, personal responsibility, and respect for others. While my faith shapes my values, I believe in protecting religious freedom and treating everyone with dignity, regardless of their beliefs.

Growing up with a father who served as a police chief, and through my own career in public service, I learned firsthand the importance of supporting victims, respecting the rule of law, and ensuring consequences for crime—while allowing opportunities for rehabilitation when appropriate.
