QUESTIONNAIRE

RIGHT TO LIFE

Under what circumstances should an elective abortion be allowed?

Any time the Mother's life is determined to be in grave danger. Until the eleventh week under normal circumstances (when the baby becomes sentient via their newfound ability to hear). Until week twelve if the mother was raped.

Chemical abortion drugs should meet essential safety standards (such as in-person consultation with a medical doctor) and require reporting to gather evidence on reactions and outcomes.

Agree

I support 'aid in dying' laws which legalize assisted suicide and euthanasia.

Agree

Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive taxpayer funds from federal, state, or local governments (including Title X grants).

Strongly Agree

I would hesitantly consider funding these organizations with the condition they are watched to ensure that money is not used for abortion.

ECONOMY

Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.

Strongly Agree

I agree more than "strongly." Many claim to agree with this but do not understand the depth of its truth and importance.

What is your position on the minimum wage?

It should be abolished and replaced with a nonbinding official recommendation so that businesses are free to pay employees whatever they wish but have a friendly suggestion from the state government regarding a liveable wage.

Should environmental and social issues, like ESG (environmental, social, and governance) ratings, be used as criteria in deciding where to invest public monies?

Yes

A very tepid "yes" because such considerations should be minimal.

RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

Under what circumstances can government close churches?

Never directly. The government can certainly arrest individuals for committing terrorism, murder, rape, and other crimes even if they are church leaders or enter a church for sanctuary. A lawful arrest is a valid excuse to close a church for a day and a lawful arrest of a church leader might have the side effect of ending the church which is of no concern to the police doing their job correctly.

Individuals and businesses should be required to provide services even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.

Strongly Disagree

Should religious schools which accept state funds be allowed to only admit families and students who agree to adhere to their statement of faith?

Yes

HEALTHCARE

What most closely matches your view on healthcare: A) Healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare option. (includes "universal healthcare," "medicare for all," etc.) B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options. C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary. D) Taxpayer funded health care should be abolished in all forms, and Medicaid and Medicare should be defunded.

My view is a less extreme form of (D). Medicare should be abolished for anyone not yet drawing from it. Medicaid should be gradually defunded until it is a skeleton of its former self and remain in that form for emergencies. As a state lawmaker, I support deregulation and free market health care.

Under what circumstances (if any) should a government, school, or employer be allowed to require vaccinations?

Only if they are private institutions and unless there is a religious objection.

NATIONAL SECURITY

The Chinese Communist Party poses serious military, cyber security, intellectual property, and global economic threats to the United States.

Neutral

We should be friendly with but wary of China. We should try to put an end to USA intellectual property theft around the world via trade deals and be careful not to overly rely on China for national security essentials, but otherwise, trade with them freely. China is not much of a concern for state and local governments. We should ban enemy foreign governments from owning land in North Carolina as a soft way to punish them economically for their behavior.

Is the United States' relationship with Israel important, and if so why?

Israel, as a regular country, should be treated with friendship but criticized when reasonable. Because of the claims made by the Bible and other religious texts, it is in our best interest to be friendly with them in particular but by saying that, I am being redundant, as I think we should be friendly with most nations.

EDUCATION

The state should fund education by allowing dollars to follow the child through programs which protect parents' freedom to choose their child's school – public, private, or homeschool.

Disagree

Tax dollars should mostly just fund public schools in proportion to the number of students in attendance of each school and should be funded leanly to be effective and focused but not so well funded as to have an unfair advantage competing against private schools and homeschooling.

VALUES

Taxpayer funds should be used to provide gender transition services.

Strongly Disagree

No healthcare diagnosis or treatment, whether mental, reproductive, or otherwise, should be given to a child without first receiving written consent from the parent unless an emergency situation arises risking immediate death.

Disagree

Perhaps at the age of 13 and after, teenagers should receive diagnoses regardless of parental consent as it is merely information. Non-life-threatening treatment must have the consent of a parent or guardian. I believe there should be a high amount of legal nuance to this to reflect that children grow into adults gradually as they age.

Children are the most vulnerable members of society and must be protected from abuse, including gender ideology, grooming, and bodily mutilation.

Disagree

Abuse is difficult to define, especially given the complexity of who consents and at what age and for what topic. Children may indeed be the most vulnerable members of society up until a certain age but at what age does that change? It is a conversation worth having before we make broad sweeping statements like this. Inevitably, children desire to learn and witness and it is subjective to decide what is wrong or not wrong to do or advocate in front of an interested child.

Marriage is a God-ordained, sacred and legal union of one man and one woman. No government has the authority to alter this definition.

Neutral

I have no problem with religions defining what a holy marriage is. The government can bind people together in unions akin to marriage and call it a marriage with the implication that it is not a holy marriage, merely a secular imitation of the concept with fewer rules. Thus, Government can marry people but not claim any sort of God-ordaining in the process. This is like how changing your name does not need to be ordained by God to happen legally.

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

Free-Will Baptist, an Evangelical denomination passionate and serious about the existence of God the Father, the Holy Spirit, and Jesus. I value many things highly. I value honesty and transparency. I value integrity and self-discipline. I value truth and curiosity. I value empathy and compassion. I value love. I value peace and diplomacy. I value justice and optimism. I value lenience and tolerance. I value diligence and humility. I value community and face-to-face communication. I value minimalism in contrast with thoughtless consumerism. I value a balance between trust and questioning experts. I value restraint and patience. I could go on and on.

ELECTIONS AND VOTING

Voting absentee by mail ballot should be limited to those meeting at least one of the following criteria: 1) 65 years of age or older on Election Day, 2) sick or disabled, 3) expecting to give birth within three weeks before or after Election Day, or 4) confirmed to be absent from the county of registration during voting.

Agree

Normally I am tepidly in favor of a person's right to vote by mail, but if limiting it will increase the worth of each vote due to there being fewer total votes, make voting appropriately difficult (as voting is a privilege to be treasured), and increase citizen confidence in the voting system, then sure.

EQUALITY

Is racism a threat to domestic security in the United States? Why or why not?

Racism is a threat to justice and peace domestically, but I do not know about security in particular. Security, in my view, implies terrorism and the like, which racism has little to no impact on. Racism is still alive in a mild form in the United States, perhaps at times too subtle to be identified with great certainty but large enough to cause mistreatment and discrimination of certain people groups. I hear earnest claims of racism from black Americans I speak to enough to assume much is true.

I agree with Critical Race Theory (CRT) which asserts that the institutions in the United States are fundamentally racist.

Choose not to answer

Biological males should not be allowed to participate in women's sports or occupy biological women's spaces whether it be bathrooms, locker rooms, sorority houses, women's shelters, or prison.

Agree

If a group explicitly invites biological males in, it may do so, as an exception in bills I author. I would not prevent women from welcoming whomever they want if everyone of occupancy consents. They may likewise change their mind and kick biological males from their space or sport if they choose.

ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT

Which comes closest to your view? (Select all that apply) A) Stricter environmental laws and regulations cost too many jobs and hurt the economy. B) Stricter environmental laws and regulations are worth the cost. C) Stricter environmental laws undermine U.S. energy independence and deter development of reliable electricity sources. D) Climate change is real and requires urgent policy action.

(C), and to a lesser extent (B), are the best way to summarize my views. I am a mild advocate of environmental law. I prescribe a small-government means of tackling the problem and through the power of free markets. I wrote a whole essay on the topic recently defending low-regulation capitalism as a good method for fighting climate change and species extinction.

ABOUT YOU

What do you think is the general purpose of government?

To protect the rights of men, the rights of women, and the rights of young people at various stages of development. Government should exist in a watchdog form to enforce justice, freedom, and equal opportunity. It should take and spend little. Its actions should be minimal and only what is necessary. It should be a servant to the people by the people.

Have you ever been convicted of a felony? If so, please explain.

No.

Have you ever been penalized for sexual misconduct in either civil or criminal court? If so, please explain.

No.

When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?

Moderate

On the modern left-right spectrum, I would seem "mixed" and "moderate" or even "radical" but not a progressive (liberal) and not a pursuer of old tradition or hyper-nationalism (conservativism). By the classical, outdated definition of the word "liberal," I would indeed be "very liberal" and forward-thinking. I also see myself as wanting to "conserve" some of the beliefs held by Americans in our early history, such as Republicanism, Small Government, and State Rights.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY

I support redirecting funds from police departments to community programs.

Disagree

Police are important to fund adequately, but, I will admit we likely fund police much more than adequately. Police are difficult to recruit and frequent to quit and are very important for a functioning society, thus we must tread lightly when managing the police, even though they are responsible for some of the racism of modern times.

2ND AMENDMENT

What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?

Merely that new gun owners get education on how to safely use their weapons. Otherwise, the government would be partially responsible for the unintended deaths a misfire causes. Insofar as weapons of mass destruction (of a greater deadliness than rocket launchers) can be considered guns, they should not be legal for individuals but can be permitted to private militias with a license from the government.
