QUESTIONNAIRE
RIGHT TO LIFE
Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not be a resource for instruction or services in the school.
Strongly Agree
Human life begins at conception and deserves legal protection at every stage until natural death.
Strongly Agree
In my study of medicine, specifically in the field of embryology, it is without a doubt that the miracle of life begins in the womb. Only God, the Grand Designer, can create life that develops through such an intricate and complex process.
ECONOMY
School districts should be able to use taxpayer money for lobbying the state legislature.
Disagree
I agree with lobbying efforts only to the extent that it is for the purpose of advancing quality education and better educational opportunities for children. However, I do not agree with using taxpayer money for that purpose. The money should be used to teaching students.
What is your position on government funding of public education from Pre-K through college?
State government funding of public education is essential in providing a quality education for all children. It is especially important for those who do not have the means or ability to choose another option. However, government funding of college education should not be expected for everyone across the board. Instead, it should be based on financial need.
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
At school, students should be able to speak freely and civilly about matters of conscience and faith, including Christianity.
Strongly Agree
School districts should not discriminate against individuals, organizations or small businesses because of their belief that marriage is only a union of one man and one woman.
Strongly Agree
Students should not be allowed to pray in school.
Strongly Disagree
Students should be allowed to pray in school as an expression of their faith
HEALTHCARE
Under what circumstances (if any) should a government, school, or employer be allowed to require vaccinations?
Traditional immunization like MMR, Tdap, and polio vaccines, that have proven efficacy and safety, should be required for school, as stated in North Carolina General Statutes. Any vaccines not specifically required by the state should be understood as optional only. No one should feel coerced to receive an optional vaccine as a condition for participation in school or employment.
EDUCATION
When should parents be restricted from speaking in school board meetings?
In general, parents should NOT be restricted from speaking in school board meetings. However, anyone who disturbs the peaceful proceedings of the meeting may be asked to leave.
Please list in order the following priorities in relation to the role of a K-12 public school (omitting any that do not apply): Mathematics, Information Technology, Science, Political Activism, Personal Finances, Gender Identity, Physical Fitness, American History, Critical Race Theory, Language Arts, Art & Music, Vocational Learning, Sexuality, Foreign Language, Social Emotional Learning
Mathematics, Language Arts, Art & Music, American History, Science, Foreign Language, Vocational Learning.
American civics education should emphasize our nation's founding principles of liberty and equality.
Strongly Agree
Civics education is important in the formation of responsible, law-abiding citizens that understand their roles and responsibilities in this country
Before students are taught courses such as Comprehensive Sex Ed (CSE) or Social Emotional Learning (SEL), they must opt-in with written parental permission.
Strongly Agree
The loss of local control in education is too high a price to pay in exchange for federal dollars.
Agree
I support the teaching of curricula (such as the 1619 Project, No Place for Hate, Second Step, etc.) that emphasizes slavery and racism as the foundation of American history.
Strongly Disagree
Parents are the ultimate authority in their child’s education and should be able to freely pursue whatever educational options they deem best for their child.
Strongly Agree
What is the function of the local school board?
The school board serves to represent the citizens of the local area to help provide a quality education for the children. It makes budget decisions and policies and procedures that help to run the school system. It oversees the staff necessary to make the schools function. When necessary, the board also mediates conflict resolutions and disciplinary decisions.
Do you support the National School Board Association's characterization of parents who speak out at school board meetings as "domestic terrorists"?
No
Who should have the authority to set curriculum and determine resources used in those curricula?
It is the role of the local school board to decide what curricular materials will fulfill the standards for a given subject and grade. State-defined standards are a framework to reach a defined objective. It does not replace a quality curriculum. I believe that a having a uniform curriculum will ensure that all children will be exposed to the same content, no matter what school they attend. Teachers have the freedom to cater the lesson plan to the learning needs of their students, but they should be following the standardized curriculum. Returning to using textbooks can help with this goal, and the school board has the authority to choose what textbooks should be used.
Who has the ultimate right to control the education of children in public schools? (a) parents (b) teachers (c)school boards.
While teachers are the ones who make and implement the lesson plan and oversee the day to day activities in the classroom, parents have the right to voice their opinion about subject matters that are counter to their beliefs or values. Ultimately, parents have the right to control the way their children reach their educational objectives. Because the school board should serve as representative of the people, parents can effect change at the ballot box.
VALUES
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
I believe that God created man in His image, and that we are fallen because of sin. It is only by His grace and mercy, through the atoning death of Jesus Christ on the cross, and His subsequent resurrection from the dead, that we are reconciled to Him and can have a personal relationship with Him. Because God loves us, we ought to love our fellow human beings. We should honor God in the way we treat others, even if their views and lifestyles are vastly different from ours.
I support allowing public high school students to participate in athletic competition based on the gender with which they identify instead of biological sex.
Strongly Disagree
God created men and women to be unique and complementary to each other. There are defined biological differences between men and women, down to the chromosomal level, which cannot be changed. Having biological males compete with biological females in athletic competition would give them an unfair advantage.
Who is responsible for teaching sexual education to children, and what is the appropriate age when it should be taught?
Parents ultimately have the responsibility of teaching sexual matter to their children in a way that aligns with their values. It is best done in the safety and comfort of the home environment, where children can feel free to ask questions. The reality is that some parents will not feel comfortable doing this, and so the task falls on the public schools. However, we need to be vigilant about what exact content the children are learning. Another reason for parents to have this responsibility is that they alone know when their children are ready to hear and understand the subject matter. It is important to remember that chronological age is not the same as developmental age. Children should learn about sex when they are at a maturity level to receive the information. Parents know their children best and should be the ones to decide when they are ready.
If you support the teaching of Sex Ed, please answer the following question: Sexual education should include these topics (list all that apply and add your own, if needed) -- Physical and emotional health outcomes; contraceptive methods; consent; abstinence; sexual orientation and gender identity; human anatomy/the reproductive system; abortion methods and side effects; stages of pregnancy and fetal development; sex acts and pleasures of sex
Sex Ed should not be taught in elementary school. Sex Ed should start in middle school and should focus on teaching human anatomy/reproductive system, physical and emotional health outcomes, methods of contraception, including abstinence. It should stay away from discussions of sexual orientation and gender identity, sex acts and pleasures of sex.
Judeo-Christian values established a framework of morality that is necessary for our system of limited government.
Strongly Agree
No healthcare diagnosis or treatment, whether mental, reproductive, or otherwise, should be given to a child without first receiving written consent from the parent.
Strongly Agree
No school official should be involved in the sexual transitioning of a student, including the use of alternative names and pronouns.
Strongly Agree
EQUALITY
I support the teaching that an individual, solely by virtue of his or her race, is inherently racist, whether consciously or unconsciously.
Strongly Disagree
ABOUT YOU
Have you ever been convicted of a felony or been penalized in either civil or criminal court for sexual misconduct? If so, please explain.
No
A candidate's personal moral values should not be relevant when considering a candidacy for elective office.
Disagree
When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?
Very Conservative
Please provide publicly available information, including interviews and media reports, validating your answer to the previous question (other than your website).
My family and I were active in advocating for a pro-life bill through my participation in NC Values Coalition in 2021. This was shown in local media and is on the NC Values website. I was also recently interviewed on the Steve Noble Show regarding my candidacy for school board.
Is there anything else you would like voters to know about you?
Because of my personal experience as a father of a child with special needs, I firmly believe that we need to pay more attention to special education. I believe in the goal of full inclusion because it will help the child with special needs to develop a sense of self-worth, and at the same time the other students will, through their experience with that child, develop greater compassion towards people who are different from them.
OTHER IMPORTANT ISSUES
Under what circumstances (if any) should schools be allowed to require vaccinations?
Schools should follow the requirements for immunization as outlined in the North Carolina General Statutes. These traditional vaccines have been proven safe and efficacious. All other vaccines, including the mRNA-based vaccines, should be considered optional, because there have not been enough longitudinal studies to prove their safety in children.
I support mask mandates.
Strongly Disagree
I believe that the typical masks used in the community are ineffective against respiratory viruses, and using N95 masks for prolonged hours in school is not practical and may have deleterious effects on learning.
