QUESTIONNAIRE

RIGHT TO LIFE

Under what circumstances should an elective abortion be allowed?

First, I define abortion as "intentionally terminating a healthy pregnancy." This does not include spontaneous miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, or fetal demise. I do not believe it is morally right to use abortion as a birth control method.

Chemical abortion drugs should meet essential safety standards (such as in-person consultation with a medical doctor) and require reporting to gather evidence on reactions and outcomes.

Strongly Agree

Safety should be a priority for use of any medication.

Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive taxpayer funds from federal, state, or local governments (including Title X grants).

Strongly Agree

I do not support public funding of abortions.

I support 'aid in dying' laws which legalize assisted suicide and euthanasia.

Strongly Disagree

I support hospice services that provide for dignity and comfort through the natural dying process.

RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

Under what circumstances can government close churches?

Government should not prohibit the free exercise of religion. This includes closing churches where free exercise of religion is practiced.

Individuals and businesses should be required to provide services even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.

Strongly Disagree

NATIONAL SECURITY

The Chinese Communist Party poses serious military, cyber security, intellectual property, and global economic threats to the United States.

Strongly Agree

Is the United States' relationship with Israel important, and if so why?

Our relationship with Israel is important. Historically it has proven to be mutually beneficial through economic, military, and strategic means.

HEALTHCARE

What most closely matches your view on healthcare: A) Healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare option. (includes "universal healthcare," "medicare for all," etc.) B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options. C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary. D) Taxpayer funded health care should be abolished in all forms, and Medicaid and Medicare should be defunded.

Individual and group healthcare needs are very unique. A hybrid approach with public and private options will most likely capture the most number of people needing coverage. The cost and quality of this coverage could be an issue. I think it is possible that insurance could go to a fully privatized model during my lifetime. It would be nice for everyone to be included in a healthcare plan, but when we observe other countries with 'universal healthcare', we see it brings its own set of problems.

Under what circumstances (if any) should a government, school, or employer be allowed to require vaccinations?

Mandates do not consider individual circumstances or beliefs. Decisions are often made for financial gain. I support offering and even encouraging vaccinations, but not coercion or forcing an individual to receive vaccinations against their will.

ECONOMY

Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.

Strongly Agree

What is your position on the minimum wage?

The minimum wage dilemma does not have an easy answer. The current minimum wage is not adequate to cover basic necessities without additional resources. Raising the minimum wage will contribute to inflation which ultimately results in no benefit.

Should environmental and social issues, like ESG (environmental, social, and governance) ratings, be used as criteria in deciding where to invest public monies?

Choose not to answer

When data is used to assure optimal performance and quality, I support its use to impact funding decisions. I do not support use of data to determine distribution of funds when it is simply used to measure adherence to political agendas.

IMMIGRATION

The U.S. should do more to physically secure the southern border.

Strongly Agree

EDUCATION

The state should fund education by allowing dollars to follow the child through programs which protect parents' freedom to choose their child's school – public, private, or homeschool.

Strongly Agree

I support policies that reflect our local goals and concerns and provide parents the ability to choose the best learning options for their children. All five of my children graduated from public schools, but I realize this is not always the best place for every child to learn.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY

I support redirecting funds from police departments to community programs.

Disagree

Our local police department has incorporated a strong social services presence into its department which has had very positive outcomes. I am not in support of decreasing current funding as this would directly impact the ability of departments to optimally fulfill their roles and duties.

2ND AMENDMENT

What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?

Responsible gun ownership includes education, safety measures, and assuring guns are not in the hands of children and others who should not have possession. I support increased education and access to safety measures such as gun locks.

Should teachers be allowed to carry guns at school?

Choose not to answer

I believe this decision should be left at the local level due to the diversity that exists across our state.

ABOUT YOU

Have you ever been penalized for sexual misconduct in either civil or criminal court? If so, please explain.

No

Have you ever been convicted of a felony? If so, please explain.

No

What do you think is the general purpose of government?

Governments should maintain law and order, provide public services, and protect citizens from outside threats.

When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?

Conservative

VALUES

Children are the most vulnerable members of society and must be protected from abuse, including gender ideology, grooming, and bodily mutilation.

Agree

Children are vulnerable, but other populations may be just as vulnerable. We need to be aware of the many subtle ways social ideologies are being introduced as a normal part of every day life.

Parents should have the right to make decisions for their minor children.

Strongly Agree

Parents also have the responsibility to look out for the welfare of their children.

Taxpayer funds should be used to provide gender transition services.

Strongly Disagree

Marriage is a God-ordained, sacred and legal union of one man and one woman. No government has the authority to alter this definition.

Strongly Agree

I recognize there are individuals who choose a life partner outside the above definition. Although I do not personally define this as "marriage," I would recognize different verbiage such as "civil union" or "legal union" to assure these relationships are treated fairly in cases such as group benefits for healthcare.

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

My faith provides a foundation for how I live my life. I find the Bible to be a source of inspiration, instruction, comfort, and conviction. When I read it, I find practical applications to my life. Its central message of God’s love gives me hope and purpose. I live my life in a way to show other people that God loves them, with the hope that they will also be able to realize the relationship they can have with God and the positive way this can have an impact on every area of their life.

ELECTIONS AND VOTING

People should be able to vote without photo identification.

Strongly Disagree

States should join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact which makes the Electoral College irrelevant.

Strongly Disagree

EQUALITY

Is racism a threat to domestic security in the United States? Why or why not?

Anything that divides us us a threat to domestic security. Racism is a learned behavior that causes division.

I agree with Critical Race Theory (CRT) which asserts that the institutions in the United States are fundamentally racist.

Strongly Disagree

Although I see racism and I believe many of our systems are very broken, I am not a strong supporter of this theory as presented. Racism is learned. Our broken systems are driven by greed and self-serving behaviors. The question here is how we can pull together to address both of these issues.

Biological males should not be allowed to participate in women's sports or occupy biological women's spaces whether it be bathrooms, locker rooms, sorority houses, women's shelters, or prison.

Strongly Agree

We need to find ways to maintain dignity, respect, fairness, and comfort of everyone. Having gender-neutral spaces such as individual bathrooms is one solution. Sport participation is a more difficult issue that will likely continue to be debated because of the many variables.

ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT

Which comes closest to your view? (Select all that apply) A) Stricter environmental laws and regulations cost too many jobs and hurt the economy. B) Stricter environmental laws and regulations are worth the cost. C) Stricter environmental laws undermine U.S. energy independence and deter development of reliable electricity sources. D) Climate change is real and requires urgent policy action.

We need to balance our laws and regulations to protect the environment with planning for our future needs by development of reliable energy sources. If we are extreme in either direction, the result will be harmful.

What do you believe is the most reliable energy source that will supply the growing demand for electricity?

Nuclear energy could meet these criteria. Unfortunately, there have been some environmental disasters that make this option undesirable to some.
