School districts should be able to use taxpayer money for lobbying the state legislature.

Disagree

Only if the taxpayers voted for their money to be used in that way! Often what is being lobbied for is best for the advancement of the school district and not the individual children.

What is your position on government funding of public education from Pre-K through college?

With any government funding comes strings that a school district can become entangled in and have a hard time breaking free from. Certain forms, particularly local state government, can be more easily managed. But even with local money, we need to have more transparency on who is behind the money and what strings are attached. I don't believe in free college. I do think more of a school's money should go straight into the classrooms and not all the extra SEL, 'restorative justice', DEI, data mining, etc programs that are being implemented now. I think the tax payers should be clearly communicated with on how a school district is using their money.

Students should not be allowed to pray in school.

Strongly Disagree

It shouldn't take away from any other student's instructional time, but it is the right of every student to exercise their faith, as long as it does not cause bodily harm to another student.

EDUCATION

What is the function of the local school board?

To act as a means of checks-and-balances to the Superintendent. The administration should provide all necessary information/documentation needed for the Board members to make an informed decision for each vote. Each Board member should be a publicly elected representative of their community. That community should have easy access to communicate with their school board since they are the only ones actually voting on how their tax dollars are being utilized.

Who should have the authority to set curriculum and determine resources used in those curricula?

Curriculum committees should be comprised of hired, knowledgeable staff alongside experienced teachers and some parents. The Board should also be included in the discussions as they receive many questions about curriculum and resources and they need to know who to speak with regarding those questions.

Before students are taught courses such as Comprehensive Sex Ed (CSE) or Social Emotional Learning (SEL), they must opt-in with written parental permission.

Strongly Agree

Those are not a part of the core education needed to produce a well educated citizen. They are extra and should be addressed by the families. (If the family system is not in a place to provide this support, an opt in program may be beneficial for those who chose it.)

Agree

I support the teaching of curricula (such as the 1619 Project, No Place for Hate, Second Step, etc.) that emphasizes slavery and racism as the foundation of American history.

Strongly Disagree

The truths and realities of slavery, along with all other horrors of the past, should not be covered up. We must learn from the past so we don't repeat it. But these should not be the emphasis of any history class.

Parents are the ultimate authority in their child’s education and should be able to freely pursue whatever educational options they deem best for their child.

Strongly Agree

A school district does not have rights to 'parent' a child. Parents do not give up their parental rights just because they send their child to a government school. The school may have suggestions and recommendations based on their training and experiences that they parents should consider. It is a partnership- parents and teachers. The best outcomes happen when they work together!

VALUES

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

I asked Jesus into my heart at age 7 and was baptized at 9. The Bible gives us some clear instructions on morality, sexuality, and forgiveness. Look at the fruits of someone's life and you will know what they believe. I am not ashamed of Jesus. My kids love Jesus. He guides the decisions we make for our family. We attend in person church every Sunday and love being with the Body of Christ. We 'do life' with other believers who spur on our faith and challenge us. We respect everyone and don't expect them to be like us. We love them where they are because that's how Jesus loves them. And thank goodness that He loves us where we are! Life truly is better together in a community.

I support allowing public high school students to participate in athletic competition based on the gender with which they identify instead of biological sex.

Strongly Disagree

Who is responsible for teaching sexual education to children, and what is the appropriate age when it should be taught?

Parents are responsible. It would be a topic to cover in a Science class though as it relates to human anatomy. We had to start at age 4 with our first born due to Pre-K kids on the playground talking about what 'sexy' meant. (Their teacher played music during class and one of the songs said 'sexy' in it.)

Strongly Disagree

If you support the teaching of Sex Ed, please answer the following question: Sexual education should include these topics (list all that apply and add your own, if needed) -- Physical and emotional health outcomes; contraceptive methods; consent; abstinence; sexual orientation and gender identity; human anatomy/the reproductive system; abortion methods and side effects; stages of pregnancy and fetal development; sex acts and pleasures of sex

Judeo-Christian values established a framework of morality that is necessary for our system of limited government.

Agree

One example- fear based parenting rather than faith based parenting has lead to rampant levels of bullying inside our schools when students choose to opt out of wearing a mask. Some fear based parents would gladly give all control to the government to force everyone to agree with their views. Along the same lines, people who want to push gender identity modeling to young children would be happy to see forced gender training in our schools. Where there is no morality, sin has no boundaries.

No school official should be involved in the sexual transitioning of a student, including the use of alternative names and pronouns.

Agree

Absolutely not the place for a school to be involved in furthering that action. I will say that calling a children by a certain name that brings them peace may be helpful in the classroom, but we should not be redefining what 'he/him' and 'she/her' means. That is not part of a basic education.

A candidate's personal moral values should not be relevant when considering a candidacy for elective office.

Disagree

Your beliefs will determine your thoughts, which determine your actions. It is unreasonable to expect someone to be separate from their values. It should not trump experience and skills though, but it should not be left out of the equation.

Is there anything else you would like voters to know about you?

Parents have the God given right and responsibility to steward the children He gave them. Building trusting relationships with the teachers and administrators at their child's school is part of their responsibility. Exposing your children to other view points and family systems is good for them to experience and be able to build a foundation of why they believe what they believe. That's why we send our kids to public school and part of why we did foster care and foreign exchange hosting...so they can experience differences and see the value in them and also see where they need to stand firm in their convictions, all while still respecting the other person.

2ND AMENDMENT

Teachers who are licensed to carry should be allowed to carry guns at school.

Agree

I like the thought behind this, but it would require some major levels of protection. You would also need to inform the parents as they may not feel comfortable having their child in that class. I would only be comfortable with it after I got to know the teacher.

OTHER IMPORTANT ISSUES

Under what circumstances (if any) should schools be allowed to require vaccinations?

Ultimately vaccination shouldn't be required because that's the government telling you what you have to do to your body. But private organizations, like schools have the right to require actions that provide a level of safety. The vaccinations required now for school have been tested for decades with the side effects well documented. I think certain ones on the current list should be moved to 'recommended' rather than required.
