QUESTIONNAIRE
RIGHT TO LIFE
Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive taxpayer funds from federal, state, or local governments (including Title X grants).
Agree
Under what circumstances should an elective abortion be allowed?
Rape, Incest, or to protect the life of the mother
Human life deserves legal protection from conception until natural death.
Strongly Agree
The lives of human embryos created through artificial methods ought to be protected from purposeful destruction.
Neutral
The Comstock Act, which bans interstate transportation of abortion-inducing drugs, should be enforced.
Disagree
To ban such transportation in my opinion violates the interstate commerce clause. The use of those drugs may be illegal in Wyoming yet legal in other states that have a right to receive them, which may be via the interstate highway system through Wyoming. This is similar to the states wanting to prohibit the transportation of Wyoming coal through their states because of their "carbon" policy, which Wyoming feels is an infringement of their right to move commodities to market in other states.
ECONOMY
What is your position on the minimum wage?
I am opposed to having minimum wage requirements. I am also opposed to any discriminatory practices of basing compensation on sex, age, or religion.
Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.
Strongly Agree
I am very concerned with the erosion of private property rights in Wyoming. It has become the practice currently to allow neighbors to influence what you can or cannot do with your private property even though the intended use complies with all federal, state, and local regulations. If you are an owner of agricultural property and you want to sell it to a company wanting to build a data center, you have the right to do that.
List your top 3-5 priorities to eliminate government waste.
1) Require any applicant applying for for a mineral or recreational lease on state lands to inform existing lease holders and all neighbors within a mile of the site of there intended application and master plan for the parcel, and provided evidence of those notifications with their application to the Office of State Lands. The Office of State Lands would then be required to notify this group of people of the date the application would be considered by the State Land Board.
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
What does "separation of church and state" mean to you?
In my mind this applies to religious liberty which allows every person the right to worship or not worship as they choose or according to the dictates of their own conscience as long as it does not violate the rights of another person, and the "state" should not interfere or diminish the ability of that right, show preference, or impose the belief of any particular religion on those of other faiths, religions, or who believe differently.
Individuals and businesses should be required to provide services even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.
Strongly Disagree
I particularly don't believe a private business owner should be required to provide services in a manner that is contrary to their moral or religious beliefs. This becomes a challenge for the individual working as a government employee that may be expected to provided the government's required service to the public that includes permits, licenses authorizing or permitting activities that are contrary to the employee's religious or moral beliefs. The public has a right to receive those services.
HEALTHCARE
What most closely matches your view on healthcare: A) Healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare option. (includes "universal healthcare," "medicare for all," etc.) B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options. C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary. D) Taxpayer funded health care should be abolished in all forms, and Medicaid and Medicare should be defunded.
Healthcare in Wyoming is complex and this question reflects a lack of understanding of healthcare delivery. Currently Medicare is for all as they reach the age of eligibility. I align most closely with (C) noting that we currently can enhances the services allowed through Medicaid, and our Wyoming tax dollars fund the state employee health insurance plan which this question suggests would not be allowed. What is the role of state government is a great policy discussion currently in process.
The government should keep a database of people with various ongoing medical illnesses to assess the economic burden of treatment.
Agree
I will qualify my answer by saying that we don't need to keep a database of people as the questions states. We need to keep track of the various illnesses and the impact of treating those illnesses, and other valuable information that could be tracked such as which drugs are the most effective in the treatment of illnesses, and comparing the cost for treating these illnesses in Wyoming compared to other states, comparing the cost for treating illnesses from hospital to hospital within the state
NATIONAL SECURITY
The Chinese Communist Party poses serious military, cyber security, intellectual property, and global economic threats to the United States.
Strongly Agree
I have very strong concerns with cyber security and intellectual property violations, and less about a military threat.
Is the United States' relationship with Israel important, and if so why?
It is to me. I would suggest Israel has become the United States closest and most trusted ally. I certainly think the Israeli government could improve in some of their diplomatic efforts, but I also think the United States Government has plenty of room to improve.
IMMIGRATION
I support the existence of sanctuary cities to protect undocumented persons.
Strongly Disagree
This notion goes contrary to the role of federal, state, and local governments. The idea that a city government of its own election can decide it doesn't have to comply with state or federal law has no foundation to support it.
EDUCATION
I support eliminating the U.S. Department of Education and giving control back to states and communities.
Strongly Agree
I do believe the state can administer the educational needs of its citizens without federal oversight. The biggest concern I hear coming from education entities is the impact that would come from the loss of federal funds.
Foreign governments should be prohibited from funding American education.
Disagree
I especially think our post secondary institutions need to have the ability to look at funding opportunities globally. Our university's energy related courses and research efforts receiving funds from foreign industries, and students from foreign countries receiving support from their governments. The institution's administration has the responsibility to make sure the intended use of foreign funds and any requirement for the use of those funds comply with the mission of the institution.
VALUES
Government should recognize and support the fundamental right and essential duty of parents to direct their child's health and educational well-being.
Strongly Agree
I have nothing more to add, I think the statement is well said.
Attempts to physically or socially transition a child to the opposite sex constitute child abuse.
Neutral
I think this question is poorly presented for a response. Who is it making the attempts? If it is the parent, does this fall in the same subject matter described in the previous question on the fundamental right of parents? If it is someone other that the parent, then I think they may be violating the parents rights, and there is cause for legal action. I have strong feelings against efforts to transition a child to the opposite sex, but this statement is too broad to agree or disagree.
Marriage is a God-ordained, sacred and legal union of one man and one woman. No government has the authority to alter this definition.
Strongly Agree
I agree and this is a position I have based on my religious beliefs. BUT religious liberty guaranteed in our constitution allows for freedom to all religions and if a religion allows for a different definition of marriage no government has the authority to alter that definition either. The definition and purpose for marriage for religious purposes may not be the same as that of a civil marriage, both should be accepted as legal. "Render unto Caesar the things which be Caesars "
I support the expansion of gambling in my state.
Strongly Disagree
I think we have woefully let the gaming industry and in particular the Historic Horse Racing expand without appropriate controls. I wish we could start over from the beginning, but we can't. We need to address uncontrolled expansion in my opinion.
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
I believe in God the Eternal Father, and in His Son Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost. I believe it is my right to worship according to the dictates of my conscience and believe we should allow everyone that same privilege to worship how, where, or what they may.
ELECTIONS AND VOTING
People should be able to vote without photo identification.
Strongly Disagree
We require photo ID in other areas of our life for security reasons such getting onto an airplane, and even when we check in at a hotel, so it doesn't seem to me that requiring a photo ID to vote is intrusive or burdensome to insure the person voting can correctly be connected to the ID he is presenting.
EQUALITY
Reparations should be given to people on the basis of race.
Strongly Disagree
If the public policy allowing discriminatory actions has been changed to prohibit such actions, what are we trying to accomplish with reparations? I am not sure any type of financial compensation adds any additional policy, or legal enhancement of a law put into place to prohibit the previous inappropriate policies.
Biological males should not be allowed to participate in women's sports or occupy biological women's spaces whether it be bathrooms, locker rooms, sorority houses, women's shelters, or prison.
Strongly Agree
My concerns is the intrusion on the privacy of biological females. They too have rights and should not have to subordinate those historically protected rights to a biological male even if his intents are without malice.
ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT
Man-made climate change is a global threat and requires urgent political action.
Strongly Disagree
I do believe we are seeing climate change, and would argue that climate changes have been taking place repeatedly over time. I do not agree the activities of man have contributed at any significant level to climate change.
What do you believe is the most reliable energy source that will supply the growing demand for electricity?
Nuclear, it is the most efficient , natural gas and coal both play an important role in the generation of electricity because they can be built more quickly and most of that infrastructure is in place.
ABOUT YOU
When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?
Conservative
In my mind I believe I am conservative, but the definition of conservative in the past decade seems to be more ambiguous and harder to measure. I think those around me would consider me within the scale ranging from conservative to moderate.
Have you ever been penalized for sexual misconduct in either civil or criminal court? If so, please explain.
No
Have you ever been convicted of a felony? If so, please explain.
No
CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY
What should be the goal of the criminal justice system?
To hold people accountable for their actions that have violated the law.
Government has a responsibility to protect children from sexual exploitation during online activities.
Strongly Agree
I believe mankind has always had the responsibility to protect the innocence of children and to provide an environment that allows a child to grow and develop to their greatest potential. We have a long standing obligation to protect them from any type to exploitation that would stifle their ability to reach their potential.
Sharia law should not be accepted or incorporated in any form within the legal framework of the United States.
Disagree
Sharia law as it applies the Muslim religion should be allowed, but similar to the governing tenants of any religion it can not be allowed to infringe on the rights of anyone. I think one can find radical applications or interpretations of most any religion's governing doctrine whether it is Muslim, Christian, or others that when applied they violate the rights of others, which I believe must not be allowed.
2ND AMENDMENT
What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?
Gun ownership should be restricted when: 1) The person is intellectually or developmentally at a level they cannot make appropriate decisions regarding their day to day well being. 2) If the person has previously committed a felony with a gun
