RIGHT TO LIFE
Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?
We need policies and legislation in place which protect the unborn. I believe that life begins at conception and public policy must give voice to these innocent lives.
Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive funds from federal, state, or local governments (including Title X grants).
Strongly Agree
If Roe v. Wade is overturned by the US Supreme Court, how far are you willing to go to roll back North Carolina's statutory abortion law that allows abortion up to 20 weeks?
Hard to know as a hypothetical situation. It would depend on the Court ruling. We need to have legislation that protects the unborn but is also likely able to withstand legal challenges, so these protections remain in place.
I support 'aid in dying' laws which legalize assisted suicide and euthanasia.
Disagree
Assisted suicide laws have great potential for abuse. We must protect those who cannot advocate for themselves. This is not only the unborn but also the elderly. Our laws must weigh both compassion and protection.
Would you support a limitation on chemical abortion that protects women from taking abortion pills without the care and supervision of a qualified physician?
Choose not to answer
ECONOMY
The government should do more to close the gap between the working class and the wealthy.
Disagree
The government must ensure a level playing field but should avoid picking "winners and losers".
What changes, if any, should be made to the tax code?
North Carolina's continued economic success is based in large part due to our efforts to lower tax rates. We must continue to budget wisely and insure we treat spending like an investment. We can continue to lower income tax rates to make our state competitive.
Taxpayer-funded public education should be guaranteed through college.
Disagree
I remain a strong supporter of our community colleges and universities, but "guaranteed" could be misunderstood to be 100% FREE college tuition. As the father of daughters who attended NC universities (Carolina and NC State), I am proud of the General Assembly's support of higher education including making tuition more affordable than many other states. For many students, college is not the best option to prepare them for a successful career. Our budget must invest to reflect this.
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
Individuals and businesses should be required to provide services even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.
Strongly Disagree
Under what circumstances can government close churches?
None.
What should be the relationship between the church and the state?
The state should play no role in regulating the church. The US constitution is often misinterpreted with respect to religion. "Separation" of religious activities from government does not mean that individuals should be prohibited from exercising free speech and worship. The 1st Amendment states there should not be an "establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." There can be no one "state sponsored" religion, and people's right to worship must be protected.
HEALTHCARE
What most closely matches your view on healthcare: A) Healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare option. (includes "universal healthcare," "medicare for all," etc.) B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options. C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary. D)Tax-payer funded health care should be abolished in all forms, and Medicaid and Medicare should be de-funded.
Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary.
Under what circumstances (if any) should a government, school, or employer be allowed to require vaccinations?
None
EDUCATION
States should allow parents to use the Opportunity Scholarship Program to fund private school for their children.
Strongly Agree
In what situations does a parent not have the right to know what their child is being taught in public school?
Parents should always know what is being taught in schools. If a school is hiding its curriculum, that is a red flag that the school is attempting to influence - not educate - students
When should parents be restricted from speaking in school board meetings?
Never. Elected representatives, including school boards, must be held accountable and open to feedback from its constituents.
VALUES
Judeo-Christian values established a framework of morality which is necessary for our system of limited government.
Agree
I support adding gender identity as a specially protected class in non-discrimination laws.
Strongly Disagree
I agree with Critical Race Theory (CRT) which asserts that the institutions in the United States are fundamentally racist.
Strongly Disagree
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
I am a Christian and a member of the Catholic Church. I am a believer in Jesus as the Savior.
ELECTIONS AND VOTING
People should be able to vote without photo identification.
Strongly Disagree
What laws would you propose to change present voting practices?
The NC Courts must allow the enforcement of existing laws (and constitutional amendments) which require an ID to vote. Our voting laws must make it "easy to vote, but hard to cheat."
EQUALITY
Is racism a threat to domestic security in the United States? Why or why not?
Not a domestic security threat. Racism is one of many issues which impact our communities. However, the politics of race, which is heavily used by the Left, can be as divisive as racism itself.
ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT
Which comes closest to your view? A) Stricter environmental laws and regulations cost too many jobs and hurt the economy. B) Stricter environmental laws and regulations are worth the cost.
Stricter environmental laws and regulations can adversely impact the economy. But more importantly, environmental laws must be based in science and driven by health risks - with a true evaluation of risk. As a civil and environmental engineer - licensed professional engineer - I served on the House Environmental Committee and brought a technical perspective to legislation. My background allows for a very unique perspective of being able to cut through the politics of environmental issues and balance public health and safety with reasonable and affordable policies.
ABOUT YOU
What do you think is the general purpose of government?
Protect the general welfare of the public, implement and enforce laws which allow for certainty, predictability and equal protection regarding economic and individual activities. Provide resources and make necessary investments in areas which cannot otherwise be provided by the private sector or individuals - law enforcement / public safety, education, transportation, etc.
When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?
Very Conservative
Please provide publicly available information, including interviews and media reports, validating your answer to the previous question (other than your website).
I encourage voters to review my voting record from my time as a member of the NC General Assembly.
Have you ever been convicted of a felony or been penalized in either civil or criminal court for sexual misconduct? If so, please explain.
No
What else would you like voters to know about you, including your legislative priorities?
Ensure continuation of fiscal policies which allow NC to be economically competitive. Transparency in government to ensure accountability. Support law enforcement and ensure our communities uphold the rule of law. Ensure our public schools provide quality education so all students can maximize their abilities - while also restricting schools from pushing political agendas. We must teach our children how to think, not what to think.
CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY
Police officers should be personally immune from prosecution for conduct consistent with departmental policy (qualified immunity) while on duty.
Strongly Agree
I support redirecting funds from police departments to mental health and community programs.
Strongly Disagree
2ND AMENDMENT
What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?
I view restrictions on gun ownership for law abiding citizens to be an infringement of the Constitution.
Victims of gun violence should be able to sue firearms dealers and manufacturers.
Strongly Disagree
