ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT

Which comes closest to your view? A) Stricter environmental laws and regulations cost too many jobs and hurt the economy. B) Stricter environmental laws and regulations are worth the cost.

As Commissioner, we must balance the interests of the consumer, the utility service provider and the economic standing of the state of Mississippi in all of our regulatory decisions. Mississippi is a regulated utility state and we must ensure that ratepayers are adequately served while not placing burdensome regulations on the backs of monopoly utility service providers. Fair regulation and transparency is key to maintaining the trust of consumers. Consumers have only one choice in the provision of critical, essential services such as electric, natural gas, water and sewer. The Mississippi Public Service Commission is charged with assuring that rates and fees for services are just and reasonable, that the service rendered is reasonably adequate, and that any facilities constructed or acquired are required for the convenience and necessity of the public. Fair, efficient and transparent regulatory constructs are necessary and needed to deliver essential utility services. However, I am concerned that the federal administration is taking steps to reduce the ability and authority of state agencies to make decisions and implement measures that are best for the citizens of Mississippi.
