QUESTIONNAIRE

RIGHT TO LIFE

Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?

As a Christian, I do not personally believe abortion should be allowed in any circumstances. However, as a legislator, I understand that this issue is very complex for many people - and society is not always able to accept black-and-white solutions to the issue, and there is a clear gray area. For purposes of legislation, I believe abortion should be illegal in all circumstances with limited exceptions allowed in cases of rape, incest, and serious health issues of the mother. I fully support the United States Supreme Court's decision in the Dobbs case, and I believe this issue is best addressed by individual state legislatures and by the people of each individual state.

I support 'aid in dying' laws which legalize assisted suicide and euthanasia.

Strongly Disagree

Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive funds from federal, state, or local governments (including Title X grants and Medicaid funding).

Strongly Agree

ECONOMY

What changes, if any, should be made to the tax code?

The tax codes if very complex, and every effort to make changes to the tax code should be done in a fiscally responsible way. As State Senator, I have voted in favor of every bill seeking to reduce taxes. I believe that Mississippi can and should eventually eliminate the State Income Tax, and I believe that we should eliminate the Grocery Tax. That said, I believe this should be done incrementally so as not to prevent the basic and necessary functions and obligations of government. I certainly believe we can cut spending along with providing tax cuts, and that is the most sound way to address the tax code in a way that we lower taxes while having a government that serves the people in a limited way.

What government spending would you reduce in order to balance the budget?

I believe Mississippi has too many agencies, and I believe we waste money in keeping and maintaining "red tape" rules and regulations that cost money and manpower to maintain and enforce. This is particularly true in building and maintaining infrastructure and in permitting. The administrative costs in each agency also are very high. I am also very proud that Mississippi has been able to pay off over $500M in debt over the past two years (FY 21/22 and 22/23), while we also have not borrowed money. This will save Mississippi tax payers millions of dollars in debt service. Paying off debt is very important. All of this said, the Mississippi Legislature is required by our Constitution to approve a balanced budge each fiscal year. I wish the Federal Government had a similar requirement in the U.S. Constitution.

RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

Individuals and businesses should be required to provide services even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.

Strongly Disagree

Under what circumstances should government close churches?

I cannot think of a single reason why the government should close churches.

HEALTHCARE

What most closely matches your view on healthcare? A) Healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare options (includes "universal healthcare," "Medicare for all," etc.); B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options; C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but the government should reform healthcare to maximize private health insurance options; D) Taxpayer funded health care should be abolished in all forms, and Medicaid and Medicare should be defunded.

I believe at this time, the response that matches my view the most would be statement (C). That said, I believe healthcare costs have steadily increased due to government involvement.

Under what circumstances (if any) should a government, school, or employer be allowed to require vaccinations?

I do not believe the government should require vaccinations, and I believe that is a decision that should be left to individuals and to the private sector.

NATIONAL SECURITY

What should the United States do to help eradicate the threat of Islamic terrorism?

I believe the United States has been very effective at eradicating the threat of Islamic Terrorism since September 11, 2001. This success is due to the bravery and sacrifice of the men and women that serve in our United States Military branches. The biggest threat I believe we face from Islamic Terrorism today comes in the form of not securing our borders and checking illegal immigration and entry into our country.

IMMIGRATION

The U.S. should do more to physically secure the southern border.

Strongly Agree

Who should be allowed to immigrate to the U.S. and under what circumstances?

We have current laws allowing legal immigration, both permanently and temporarily, and these laws should be enforced. The laws are not currently being enforced, and that is the problem. I believe we should first secure our southern border and provide the resources necessary to prevent illegal crossings, and I believe we should enforce the laws we have in place now. I also believe anyone here illegally now should be forced to "get in line" and apply for legal status rather than being granted amnesty.

EDUCATION

The state should prioritize education funding by allowing dollars to follow the child instead of focusing on programs and administrators.

Strongly Agree

If you support giving parents more educational options, please list all of the following options that apply and in priority order: A) A universal Education Savings Account (ESA) program; B) An ESA program for low-income children only; C) Expanding tax credits for businesses to give to private schools; D) Expanding public charter schools; E) Allowing homeschoolers to take classes at the local public school.

(A); (D); (B); (E); and C - in that order. I believe all options should be on the table to make sure we are providing our students with the best education.

What most closely matches your view on pornography? A) I agree with the American Library Association that any person of any age should have access to any book; B) Library collections, displays and events should be curated using age-appropriate guidelines, similar to what we do for movies (G, PG, R, etc.); C) Mississippi libraries should follow state laws that prevent pornography from being accessible to minors.

(C) I believe Mississippi libraries should follow state laws that prevent pornography from being accessible to minors. Period.

VALUES

What most closely matches your view on marriage? A) Anything goes; B) Marriage between one man and one woman should be promoted and encouraged; C) A divorce should be hard to get; D) Marriage is important, but no-fault divorce should be allowed.

(B) and (D). I believe no-fault divorce should be available primarily as a means to prevent abuse and extortion of spouses seeking to leave a marriage. While I believe marriage between one man and one woman should be promoted, I know there are instances where allowing a no-fault divorce can prevent dangerous situations.

Judeo-Christian values establish a framework of morality that is necessary for our system of limited government.

Strongly Agree

I support adding gender identity as a specially protected class in non-discrimination laws.

Strongly Disagree

Marriage is a God-ordained, sacred and legal union of one man and one woman. No government has the authority to alter this definition.

Agree

This is my belief as a Christian. My union with my wife is a union and marriage under God; if the government did not recognize my marriage, it would not matter to my wife and me - as we believe our marriage is a Christian marriage.

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

I am a Christian. I believe in the teaching of Jesus Christ, and I strive to follow him. I know that I am an imperfect person and a sinner. I pray often for God to guide me. As a legislator, I ask God to lead me into situations where I can make a positive difference for my state and my community - and I especially ask to be led into the tough and controversial issues where leadership is needed most. I ask God to then grant me the wisdom and the courage to do the right thing in leading.

ELECTIONS AND VOTING

People should be able to vote without photo identification.

Strongly Disagree

What most closely matches your view on ballot measures? A) Ballot measures should be able to amend the constitution with few, if any, restrictions; B) Ballot measures should only be able to propose changes to laws when signatures are collected from people all across the state; C) The current process of allowing the Legislature to propose constitutional amendments will result in the best outcomes.

(B). I believe in the Constitutional Republican system of Government.

EQUALITY

I agree with Critical Race Theory (CRT) which asserts that the institutions in the United States are fundamentally racist.

Strongly Disagree

Reparations should be given to people on the basis of race.

Strongly Disagree

Is racism a threat to domestic security in the United States? Why or why not?

Racism has always existed, and it will always exist. That said, I believe America has come a long way from the days of our founding. I believe that a big threat to our domestic security would be in the form of efforts to constantly divide and enrage citizens based on race. Instead of focusing on race, I believe more focus should be placed on individuals. I am a big advocate of the lesson from Martin Luther King, Jr. that a man should be judged by the content of his character and not by the color of his skin.

ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT

Which comes closest to your view? A) Stricter environmental laws and regulations cost too many jobs and hurt the economy. B) Stricter environmental laws and regulations are worth the cost.

(A). We are costing American industries, businesses, and tax payers far too much in the name of environmental regulations - and we are forcing regulations on American industries and manufacturers that are not being forced on foreign markets. This is extremely detrimental to the American economy, and it benefits the economies of countries like China.

ABOUT YOU

What do you think is the general purpose of government?

I believe the primary function of the government is to protect the God-given, inalienable rights of the citizens. I also believe the Government exists, and it is allowed to exist by the citizens, to provide certain core benefits to the people, such as safety, infrastructure, and - to a degree - education and healthcare.

When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?

Very Conservative

Please provide publicly available information, including interviews and media reports, validating your answer to the previous question (other than your website).

I am always willing to discuss my positions publicly, and many of my interviews and references are available via search on Google.

Have you ever been convicted of a felony or been penalized in either civil or criminal court for sexual misconduct? If so, please explain.

No.

What else would you like voters to know about you, including your legislative priorities?

I believe in limited government, low taxes, and strong family values.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY

Police officers should be personally immune from prosecution for conduct consistent with departmental policy (qualified immunity) while on duty.

Strongly Agree

I support redirecting funds from police departments to mental health and community programs.

Strongly Disagree

I believe we need to address the mental health crisis in our communities with available resources, but not at the expense of resources to our police departments and first responders.

2ND AMENDMENT

What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?

I believe in and support the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution. I believe any restrictions on gun ownership should only come after full due process has been afforded.

Victims of gun violence should be able to sue firearms dealers and manufacturers.

Strongly Disagree
