Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?
I’m not sure a Secretary of State would ever have the opportunity in anyway to affect the law on abortions, but I will give my personal opinion. I think an abortion is a decision a woman would need to make with the advice and counsel of the baby’s father and her religious leaders.
What in the nature of mankind caused America’s Founders to carefully define, separate, and limit powers in the Constitution?
All human beings are flawed, none of us are perfect. The founders felt that government is necessary but needs to be watched closely by the voters. In fact, my candidacy is based on the fact that our current system tends to give victory to a candidate that has the largest minority following rather than the broadest popular support. I support the alternative voting method called approval voting and the method Maine has gone with, ranked choice voting.
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
How can one be brief about spiritual believes and values, but I’ll attempt to do so. I believe that a relationship with a supreme being is a personal one. Churches exist to help the individual come closer to his or her God. With that being said, I do believe in God. My values extend from the proposition that Christ taught us, the golden rule. Treat everyone the way you’d want them to treat you. That’s the simplest way to express my values. I believe very strongly in being honest, ethical, and respectful.
When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and immigration, which of the following best describes you overall?
No Answer
Please provide publicly available information validating your answer to the previous question.
I believe that everyone has the right to be able to emigrate to improve their lot in life. Many nations of the world have set up rules to manage immigration but the immigration rules in our country appear to be racially biased. At different periods in our history immigration rules were set to not allow Chinese, Asians to immigrate. At other times it was the Catholics/Irish. Now it appears to be Mexicans and Central Americans. When the Mormons migrated from New York State to Utah they didn’t have to pass through any international checkpoints, they simply moved. When my grandfather immigrated to the US in the early 1900s from Austria he followed the rules and came through Ellis Island. Immigration will always be with us, and in fact as families here in the US have fewer children we will need immigration to fill jobs. Much of the fight over immigration has to do with welfare benefits, perhaps new immigrants would need to earn the right to have benefits.
What is the best way to bring down unemployment?
The unemployed consist of two groups, people who can’t find work and people who don’t want to work. To help the first group find work we need to do everything we can to create an environment where businesses would be willing to take risks, expanding and hiring more people. This environment also should encourage those who want to take the risk in starting their own businesses. For the group of people that don’t want to work we need to create an environment that includes them socially to help provide them with hope.
How would you promote healthcare coverage that is adequate, affordable and accessible for all?
In my background, as a military dependent, I was able to experience the concept of health care that you don’t have to pay for. As an insurance agent I was able to advise people on how to insure for catastrophic health events and set up savings for more routine events. If we create an environment where people want to insure for catastrophic, budget busting, bankruptcy type events and reward people who put money aside into a health savings account, for example, we could promote rational healthcare systems. For those among us who can’t afford to fund their own healthcare, we could incentivize individuals of means to help fund health savings accounts for those who can’t afford them.
What role should government play in boosting the economy?
Again, as I said above, government needs to be effective in creating an environment where businesses who are willing to take a risk would do so and also encourage people, who are willing to take a risk, to start their own businesses.
What education or experience qualifies you to hold the office for which you seek election?
I have over 30 years of business management experience, including owning my own business. I also have had the experience of being a union steward holding bad managers accountable. I have managed budgets that in today’s dollars would be in the $6 million range. I have recruited, selected, and hired multiple people by assessing their strengths and weaknesses and identified people I could promote from within. I’ve had to train myself to think outside the box, not rest on my laurels/accomplishments, and be a true problem solver.
