OTHER IMPORTANT ISSUES

Congress should repeal the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare).

Strongly Agree

It is the government’s responsibility to be sure children are properly educated.

Disagree

Any teaching to children on sex education in public schools must include all contraceptive methods, and should not show preference to abstinence.

Strongly Disagree

Biology textbooks which do not teach both the scientific strengths and weaknesses of the theory of evolution should be rejected.

Strongly Agree

The more people live by Judeo-Christian values, the less government is needed.

Strongly Agree

Free enterprise and the right to private property turn mankind's natural self-interest into the fairest and most productive economic system there is, and are the key to national prosperity.

Strongly Agree

The Ten Commandments should not be displayed in public school buildings.

Strongly Disagree

Islamic law (Sharia) does not pose a threat to the United States and its Constitution.

Strongly Disagree

More restrictive gun control laws are needed to protect public safety.

Disagree

Students should not be taught about intelligent design.

Religious liberty is at risk in the United States.

Strongly Agree

It is the government’s responsibility to be sure everyone has health care and a livable income.

Agree

Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?

Not applicable to my office. Abortion is not an issue that falls under the scope or regulatory purview of the State Board of Education, which is instead focused on education standards and instructional materials for Texas public schools. However, I am opposed to abortion.

Based on the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, please arrange the following entities, starting with the highest source of authority, and continue the list in descending order of authority, skipping any that do not apply: Academia, Congress, Constitution, God, Industry, Media, Professional Sports, Supreme Court, Voters.

God, Constitution, Voters, Supreme Court, Congress

What in the nature of mankind caused America’s Founders to carefully define, separate, and limit powers in the Constitution?

It is the nature of man to seek self-interest first. The Founders understood this and were careful to set up a balanced system.

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

As a Christian, I believe in Jesus Christ as my savior and Lord. My faith guides my actions of service to others.

Considering all issues (social, economic, national security, etc.), which of these best describes you?

Conservative

Please defend your answer to the previous question by referencing your publicly available track record.

The SBOE has a very limited scope of responsibility, chiefly curriculum standards and instructional materials approval. With that in mind, I have accomplished the following: Board resolutions passed: for requiring public notice, access, input during local instructional materials process; for asking the College Board to revisit and revise the new AP US History course. Worked with colleagues and publishers to make sure all instructional materials up for review include a digital public portal for the general public during the review process. Previously to review materials you had to go to one of 20 Education Service Centers across the state. No online public access was provided before approval. Made sure English standards were online for review during the review process to engage educators and the public early. Transparency and access for the public are key. Worked to engage and empower parents, educators and business leaders on key Texas education issues.

Additional comment from candidate:

There is no more important area to serve in than the Pre-K-12 educational arena. Without educated and productive citizens, our economy and communities cannot thrive or ultimately survive. Texas educates 5.3 million students. That represents 10% of the total public school students nationwide. I believe that each and every student matters not only to the future of Texas but to the future of the nation.
