QUESTIONNAIRE

RIGHT TO LIFE

Under what circumstances should an elective abortion be allowed?

Only in the first 20 weeks of pregnancy, unless there is significant elevation in risk to the life of the mother, as determined by the mother and the doctor. And 20 weeks is kind of arbitrary. No one can draw a bright, objective line on this one. I could be persuaded that the time limit should be 14 or 24 weeks.

Chemical abortion drugs should meet essential safety standards (such as in-person consultation with a medical doctor) and require reporting to gather evidence on reactions and outcomes.

Neutral

Abortion drugs should be available over the counter. The FDA should be abolished and replaced with private, competitive drug certification organizations.

Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive taxpayer funds from federal, state, or local governments (including Title X grants).

Strongly Agree

All medical care should be privatized. Private charities and hospitals should help the poor to pay for care. Planned Parenthood would be under fewer government restrictions, and could carry out their mission better, if they relied only on private funding. Government funding always comes with strings, and it creates political conflict. Most of that goes away with privatization, and the discipline of needing to raise funding would improve Planned Parenthood.

I support 'aid in dying' laws which legalize assisted suicide and euthanasia.

Strongly Agree

We own our own lives. We have a right to commit suicide whenever we want. But taxpayers should not pay for such assistance. We as individuals can determine how best to support our loved ones at the ends of their lives. And individual doctors should always be able to opt out of helping someone commit suicide. Like almost everything else, it should be voluntary and private.

ECONOMY

Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.

Strongly Agree

Socialism and central government control of the economy has failed everywhere it has been tried. And it collapses faster the more completely it is implemented. Free markets generate more wealth, which means more money is available to help the poor. Private orgs do a better job of caring for the destitute and the mentally ill, and those addicted to drugs than do government bureaucrats. If you really care about the poor, you want free markets and the equal defense of private property rights.

What is your position on the minimum wage?

It hurts less skilled and younger workers. It cuts off the bottom rungs in the ladder of success. It violates our right to freedom of contract and liberty. It hurts urban blacks and Hispanics more. There should be no minimum wage.

Should environmental and social issues, like ESG (environmental, social, and governance) ratings, be used as criteria in deciding where to invest public monies?

No

If ESG is implemented voluntarily, I have no problem with it. Independent non-profit agencies can rate corporations based on ESG or any other set of criteria and publish results. Individual investors should be able to ignore these ratings or not. Personally, I think the ESG standards being promoted are an attempt to implement socialism incrementally. There should be no "public monies," so there should be no criteria for investing it.

RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

Under what circumstances can government close churches?

Never. The First Amendment and the 4th Amendment prohibit such actions. If a group of individual church members were plotting violence, or were all convicted of terrorism or something, then they should be imprisoned. But shutting down their church is an act of tyranny. Even during Covid, preventing people from attending church (or any business or organization) is a power that should never be entrusted to corruptible politicians.

Individuals and businesses should be required to provide services even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.

Strongly Disagree

If we don't like a company or it's owners, we may boycott. I'd never buy a cake from a baker who refuses to bake for a gay wedding. But I defend the baker's right to freedom of association and commerce. I even defend the rights of people I disagree with, so long as they are peaceful. My recourse is to persuade or to boycott, not to use the threat of violent force of the law to make someone act as I want them to. That would be intolerant.

HEALTHCARE

What most closely matches your view on healthcare: A) Healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare option. (includes "universal healthcare," "medicare for all," etc.) B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options. C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary. D) Taxpayer funded health care should be abolished in all forms, and Medicaid and Medicare should be defunded.

D) There would need to be a transition period, maybe over 20 years, to a new privatized system. But in the long run, the poor will be cared for better under free markets than under government control.

Under what circumstances (if any) should a government, school, or employer be allowed to require vaccinations?

Government may never require vaccinations, including at government schools. We own our own bodies. But private employers and schools may do so. I would boycott those employers and schools, but I would defend their right to freedom of contract.

NATIONAL SECURITY

The Chinese Communist Party poses serious military, cyber security, intellectual property, and global economic threats to the United States.

Strongly Agree

But I still prefer free trade with China. I think this is the best way to help the Chinese people, and to make China more free and democratic. Helping to create entrepreneurs in China, and having American business people interact with Chinese business people will tend to spread friendship and understanding between our people. China is socialist. This is a major source of weakness. The USSR collapsed from it's own inefficiency. China will either reform, or collapse itself if we merely wait.

Is the United States' relationship with Israel important, and if so why?

I'm a fan of the Jews. Israel is a friend to the US, and the closest thing to a free country in the Middle East. It is more democratic than Dubai. But the US government should not engage in foreign aid, whether humanitarian or military to any nation. Private Americans and orgs should send money to the defense of Israel or the Palestinians or Ukraine or any cause they like. Now we send money to both sides of this conflict, and in so doing we fuel violence. Cut foreign aid, and cut taxes.

IMMIGRATION

The U.S. should do more to physically secure the southern border.

Neutral

Peaceful people who want to come to the US should be allowed without numerical restrictions. We should exclude people with highly infectious diseases, see if they are on terrorist watch lists, or see if they are wanted for violent crime in their home nations. We need to be able to check people, so we need to control our borders. But the drug war is a failure, and guns should be freely traded, so I would not stop people from bringing either into the country. We need more productive immigrants.

EDUCATION

The state should fund education by allowing dollars to follow the child through programs which protect parents' freedom to choose their child's school – public, private, or homeschool.

Agree

This is a step in the right direction, but all government schools should be totally privatized, and set up as non-profit orgs with local parental boards. They should compete with each other and charge tuition. A full-ride scholarship should be given to the bottom half, based on income and assets. Over time, even this voucher/scholarship program should be privatized. I'm a teacher. Government schooling should be recognized as a failed social experiment.

VALUES

Children are the most vulnerable members of society and must be protected from abuse, including gender ideology, grooming, and bodily mutilation.

Agree

Schools are propagandizing kids and they should not. Governments should not be able to transition kids without parental consent. One day we will recognize this as a major injustice. But parents and children should be able to opt for and pay for drug and surgery transitions from willing providers if they pay for it themselves. I think that most of the time this is a mistake, but I defend the rights of kids and parents to do this to themselves.

Parents should have the right to make decisions for their minor children.

Strongly Agree

Despite the horrible parenting we have heard about from time to time, the government does a worse job, overall, of raising and caring for children. It is a slide in the direction of Marxism for children to be raised by governments. In order to defend my right to raise my three kids as I see fit, I must defend the rights of other parents to raise their kids in their own way, even if I disagree with that. There are limits for abuse, of course, but the worst parent is an abusive government.

Taxpayer funds should be used to provide gender transition services.

Strongly Disagree

The free market will provide gender transition services to those who want to pay for it themselves, but no taxpayer funding should be given for this or any medical care, outside of that provided under contract with veterans or government employees.

Marriage is a God-ordained, sacred and legal union of one man and one woman. No government has the authority to alter this definition.

Strongly Disagree

Marriage is that most beautiful of contracts concerning love. Government has no right to violate the rights to freedom of contract and freedom of association between any consenting adults. Marriage should be privatized. Churches may set requirements for who may or may not get married within their buildings or membership. Private, secular marriage is just as valid. I defend the rights of gays and lesbians to marry each other, and even defend marriages involving multiple consenting adults.

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

If God is love, then I believe in God. If God is the wonderful universe, beautiful nature, or the laws of Physics, then I believe in God. If God is the set of moral rules that help people get along with each other, then I believe in God. But I see no evidence for a personal God, who creates miracles and listens to prayers. But you are free to try and persuade me! Generally, if you believe your life is a gift from God, and therefore you have the rights to life, liberty and property then I am on your side. If you think that lying and stealing are morally wrong, even if they advance a political agenda, I am on your side. If you think that to the greatest extent possible, society should be voluntary for peaceful people, I'm on your side.

ELECTIONS AND VOTING

People should be able to vote without photo identification.

Disagree

There is too much opportunity for fraud without careful vetting of voters. To assume that blacks and Hispanics have a harder time getting a drivers license is a racist assumption. There is so much mistrust with out election system, that restoring faith in elections is critical for America to stay together as a nation. Voter ID is one important step towards that end.

States should join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact which makes the Electoral College irrelevant.

Strongly Disagree

The founders were wise people. There is a reason for the Electoral College that is still valid today. It is another check on the emergence of tyranny. We should not throw this system out because dictatorship is always just a few years away.

EQUALITY

Is racism a threat to domestic security in the United States? Why or why not?

Affirmative action is racist. Racial preferences in hiring are racist. Reparations to blacks and others are racist. I agree with MLK jr when he said he dreamed of living in a nation where his children would not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. I extend my hand in friendship to any peaceful person, regardless of race. Politicians and Marxists are trying to divide us based on race. We should not let them.

I agree with Critical Race Theory (CRT) which asserts that the institutions in the United States are fundamentally racist.

Strongly Disagree

Frederick Douglass had the right idea. The principles of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution just had to be extended to cover blacks, and members of all races. Voting suffrage needed to be granted to women and their property rights defended. The principles of the American Revolution are sound, good and wonderful, but they must be defended for all Americans. We each own our own lives. We don't get rights from governments. Good governments defend rights. Bad ones violate them.

Biological males should not be allowed to participate in women's sports or occupy biological women's spaces whether it be bathrooms, locker rooms, sorority houses, women's shelters, or prison.

Strongly Agree

I am happy to use preferred pronouns. I welcome trans people to our society and my circle of friends. I defend their rights to life, liberty and property, just as I do for anyone else. I am happy to be in clubs and organizations with them. But it is just not fair for a trans female to compete, head-to-head, against a cis female of any age. The advantages of having XY chromosomes and testosterone accrue long before puberty. National age-class records prove this in nearly all sports.

ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT

Which comes closest to your view? (Select all that apply) A) Stricter environmental laws and regulations cost too many jobs and hurt the economy. B) Stricter environmental laws and regulations are worth the cost. C) Stricter environmental laws undermine U.S. energy independence and deter development of reliable electricity sources. D) Climate change is real and requires urgent policy action.

I like both A) and C). I slightly prefer A) if I must choose. But I would add another choice: E) Environmental regulations too often violate the right to property and freedom of trade. They should only apply when there is real, provable harm to people.

What do you believe is the most reliable energy source that will supply the growing demand for electricity?

Natural gas, hydro and nuclear power. Solar and wind will never be reliable enough, and they cause more environmental harm through mining of metals and other problems than they save. There should be a free market in energy production. Privatize it.

ABOUT YOU

Have you ever been penalized for sexual misconduct in either civil or criminal court? If so, please explain.

No.

Have you ever been convicted of a felony? If so, please explain.

No.

What do you think is the general purpose of government?

The only legitimate purpose of government is the defense of our equal, individual rights to life, liberty and property. The legitimate functions of government are national defense, police and courts. All other functions and departments and agencies should be abolished or privatized. Taxation is theft. What remains of government should be funded voluntarily, and this means, in practice, that the rich will fund it. Even roads and fire departments are better handled privately.

When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?

Choose not to answer

I am very tolerant on social issues such as freedom of speech and marriage equality. I am a strong defender of the free market. I want taxes to be minimized, if not eliminated, and I want government power and regulation to be minimized. I am a non-interventionist on military and foreign policy issues. So I and most other Libertarians don't fit on the one-dimensional political spectrum you present above. That model is too simplistic to describe the American political landscape.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY

I support redirecting funds from police departments to community programs.

Strongly Disagree

Defunding the police is a stupid idea, and has lead to increasing crime and shoplifting and homelessness. The effort has reduced safety for regular Americans. Defending our rights to life, liberty and property is literally the only legitimate function of government. Shoplifters and thieves should be arrested and prosecuted under the law. Undermining public safety is a Marxist effort to weaken our society.

2ND AMENDMENT

What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?

Only those convicted of violent crimes or who have been declared insane by a court of law should have their gun ownership rights restricted. Gun free zones should be abolished. Mass shooters are attracted to such areas. Defensive use of handguns happens millions of times each year. The way to counter a bad guy with a gun, is via a good guy with a gun. I feel LESS safe in areas where I know that regular Americans have been disarmed.

Should teachers be allowed to carry guns at school?

Yes

Yes, If the teachers and school administrators choose to, if they complete a gun safety course, and if the gun is kept in a locked drawer or closet at school. Gun-free zone signs should be removed. They attract mass shooters. Instead, signs should be posted at schools reading something like: "Warning, random adults in this school are armed."
