OTHER INFORMATION
Larson stated that the “single most important reason” to vote for him is his commitment to upholding his oath of office and both the U.S. and Washington State Constitutions. He emphasized judicial restraint, stating that judges should not “legislate from the bench,” and that courts should remain fair, impartial, and separate from political disputes.
In an [un]DIVIDED interview with Brandi Kruse, Larson stated that skin color “is not always irrelevant” and may be relevant where a person’s experiences—such as those of a “Black young male or female or Asian”—influence their behavior. He added that such experiences are relevant to how individuals are treated in the legal system, stating that “a person’s experience is relevant.”
Larson expressed disagreement with the majority in State v. Blake, 197 Wash. 2d 170, 481 P.3d 521 (2021), stating that “the majority’s decision was based on some things that were never argued in the case,” and that “it’s not even fair to the parties to make your decision based on things that were not even argued by the parties.
Larson agreed with McCleary v. State, 173 Wash. 2d 477, 269 P.3d 227 (2012), a Washington Supreme Court decision holding that the State was failing to meet its constitutional duty under article IX, section 1 to fully fund basic education and requiring the Legislature to implement reforms to ensure adequate and equitable school funding. However, Larson stated that “what the Court has done with it since the decision has been made has been disruptive to our system of government and doesn’t solve our education funding issues.” He further stated that the aftermath of the McCleary case became “so extreme” that the Supreme Court was asked to close schools and that one justice even questioned whether the Court could authorize a $28 billion tax increase.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY
The burden of proof in a criminal case is generally that the state must provide proof beyond a reasonable doubt. Some say the reason the burden of proof is so high is because we greatly value ensuring that the innocent are not unjustly imprisoned. Please comment on this topic.
