Protection of tyranny from Kings (leaders), freedom of Religion and the right to practice it, the right to own property without government intrusion, to protect themselves, family or property with the right to carry and own arms. They understood from experience that those in power always want to control not only the fruit of someone else labor, but every aspect of their lives, and the people needed the power to control and stop their over reaching.
