What in the nature of mankind caused America’s Founders to carefully define, separate, and limit powers in the Constitution?
Humans are self-interested, ambitious creatures prone to the abuse of power. The founders made a government of limited powers divided into competing branches to counter the attempts of ambitious individuals to secure their own good at the expense of the public good. Each branch defends against encroachment by the other branches while the people guard against encroachment by the government as a whole.
