I voted in these primaries and general elections:

Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?

In the tragic situation when it is necessary to save the life of the mother.

What should the United States do to help eradicate the threat of radical Islamic terrorism?

America needs to remain engaged in the world. We need to empower our moderate Muslim and Arab partners to clamp down on radicalism in their countries, hold terror-supporting clerics accountable, and lead by example by denouncing terrorism and radicalism. Here at home, we must support American Muslim communities’ right to practice their religion in peace, and work hand in hand to address the issue of radicalization. We must use every tool at our disposal to deprive terrorist groups of resources and areas to operate freely. They must be defeated, not accommodated.

What in the nature of mankind caused America’s Founders to carefully define, separate, and limit powers in the Constitution?

"The great security against a gradual concentration of the several powers in the same department, consists in giving to those who administer each department the necessary constitutional means and personal motives to resist encroachments of the others…In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place oblige it to control itself.” James Madison, Federalist No. 5

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

I am a Christian.

When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and immigration, which of the following best describes you overall?

Conservative

Please provide publicly available information validating your answer to the previous question.

As Chairman of the Oversight Subcommittee for Ways & Means, I worked to shine a light of transparency on the IRS’ illegal targeting of political groups. As a result, legislation was signed into law to prevent this type of politically motivated harassment. As current Chairman of the Health Subcommittee, I have placed a renewed focus on fixing rampant waste within Medicare. More than $1 billion taxpayer money a week is lost due to fraud. My legislation, H.R. 3220 would help put an end to this criminal activity, saving taxpayers $60 billion a year. I’ve long been a leader in opposing the dangerous Iran Nuclear deal & introduced legislation that would prohibit lifting sanctions without truly verifiable de-nuclearization. I am a defender of our close ally Israel & lead advocacy for our two nations’ special partnership as the Co-Chair of the House Republican Israel Caucus. I’ve fought my entire career to protect the sanctity of life, helping to change law & regulation to value all life.

How would you promote healthcare coverage that is adequate, affordable and accessible for all?

Increasing competition and choice in the market is key. I’m focused on the needs of our families and what changes we can make that will protect the vulnerable, keep health insurance affordable, include protections for pre-existing conditions and put American families back in control of their own healthcare.

What role should government play in boosting the economy?

Government has a responsibility to remove the obstacles that hinder success and support policies that allow creativity and innovation to flourish, the result of which is a thriving economy.

What changes should be made to the tax code?

I was proud to play a key role in drafting the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. We brought badly needed updates to the tax code including switching to a territorial system to increase the competitiveness of American businesses, doubling the standard deduction for families and individuals and lowering tax rates for everyone. In further explanation of Question 4, consistent with Supreme Court rulings, the tax code will continue to be applied equally to all couples.

What is the best way to bring down unemployment?

The best way to bring down unemployment is to get the government out of the way and encourage private sector growth, as we have done with the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Removing some of the tax burdens on businesses has allowed them to grow, expand and create jobs. Since its passage, we have seen the unemployment rate fall to 3.8 percent—the lowest it has been in 18 years.

How would you guarantee Social Security benefits for future generations?

In Illinois, it is painfully clear what avoidance behavior can do to an underfunded pension system. We need thoughtful reforms to ensure that Social Security is solvent for future generations, while honoring the promises that were made to current retirees.

What education or experience qualifies you to hold the office for which you seek election?

I am a devoted husband, father and American. I work for the people of my district and fight for policies that represent their values. My goal in Congress is to get effective solutions accomplished, and that means tuning out the vitriol and divisive rhetoric and instead focusing on bringing people together. Because of my strong track record of getting things done collaboratively, the Lugar Center at Georgetown University named me one of the most bipartisan U.S. Representatives.
