Becoming Well Versed
The Great Commandment from Christ was to “Go and make disciples.” To me that means not just making more believers in Christ through sharing the gospel but helping those believers to grow in their depth of knowledge of Christ, with the goal that each of us “measure up to the full stature of Christ” in all aspects of our lives.
Biblical discipleship is the process of becoming more Christlike. The origin of the word “Christian” actually meant “little Christs.” God speaks to us through his word and through prayer, and the more time we spend with him, the more we learn to think like Christ . . . and he speaks to every area of our lives, including civic responsibilities!
Why do I go into all this background? Well, it has to do with how we state our goal for 2025. iVoterGuide understands that it’s important to be well versed, both biblically and politically—and that we have unique opportunities right now.
Biblical foundations were so ingrained in what our Founders believed; the Word was a central tenet of their education and training. For example, John Quincy Adams read five chapters from the bible every day since he was 7 years old and elementary school curriculum required memorizing an entire chapter almost every week! So, how do we become more like them and get back to thinking, processing, and discussing topics like they did?
First, we get grounded in God (sound familiar?). We look at elements of biblical discipleship that form the framework for talking about everything else. The root of biblical discipleship is not just reading God’s word or attending church each week. It requires really studying God’s word, taking it in deeply and contemplating what it means in each of our lives.
I highly suggest that each of you be involved in in-depth Bible study, either at your church or through one of the many wonderful bible studies out there. I was discipled, in part, through over 20 years in Community Bible Study.
There are other steps we can take, and with our focus on biblical and political discipleship this year, we’ll be looking at things like scripture memorization, prayer, and fellowship—things that are an integral part of our spiritual life and learning.
After we look at biblical discipleship, we'll look at political and civic education; we'll get rooted in research. We’ll take a look at not just the issues of the day but also government processes. We’ll learn how to think critically and discuss rationally so that we can hone our views and be ambassadors for a system of government strongly rooted in the word of God.
I’m excited about our journey. We’re getting to the basics of our tagline, “Grounded in God. Rooted in research.” Thank you for joining me on this journey of biblical and political discipleship.
Now would be a great time to invite others to join us in this discipleship journey by receiving our weekly emails. Encourage your friends and family to sign up here.
