School districts should be able to use taxpayer money for lobbying the state legislature.
Agree
The vast majority of revenue for public school districts is from taxpayers; a small percentage comes from private donations. This means that any resource used to contact a legislator comes from taxpayers. I am okay with working with legislators and informing them of the needs of the districts. The legislators are not required to approve everything that the districts requests. A balance is necessary in this relationship.

What is your position on government funding of public education from Pre-K through college?
The greater public prospers when children are taught properly and the greater good is achieved when this occurs. There is also a balance that needs to be found in that proper oversight is needed to make sure that children are being taught the classical foundations of reading, writing, math, and proper civics. If this is not occurring, change needs to be made. Subsidizing undergraduate programs is acceptable, however, I am against a “tuition-free” model. College students are adults and are responsible for their actions. In this, they should contribute to their education.

Who should have the authority to set curriculum and determine resources used in those curricula?
I believe that parents partner with the schools to educate have their children educated. This means that the overall educational responsibility is that of the parents. The district will set a curriculum that meets the needs and values of the community. The board acts in oversight to validate or redirect the district to meet its charter with the community. Likewise, the resources used must meet the needs and values of the community. The parents have every right to continually review the resources and the board has every right to direct the district to meet the community’s needs.

When should parents be restricted from speaking in school board meetings?
Restricting community members should only occur if those specific members have or are making threats or causing disruption that prevents the work of the board from taking place. As long as there is a time set aside for community members to speak and people act civil, then it is important to have this opportunity to hear concerns, grievances, or praise.

Please list in order the following priorities in relation to the role of a K-12 public school (omitting any that do not apply): Mathematics, Information Technology, Science, Political Activism, Personal Finances, Gender Identity, Physical Fitness, American History, Critical Race Theory, Language Arts, Art & Music, Vocational Learning, Sexuality, Foreign Language, Social Emotional Learning
Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, American History, Foreign Language, Information Technology, Vocational Learning, Art & Music, Physical Fitness, Personal Finances. All of these are important, I ranked them in the order that I think that overall time would be spent on each subject and some of them could be adjusted depending on the person, i.e. one person may prefer the arts over vocational training. Personal Finance is important, but in the course of K-12, one would spend a smaller percentage of their time in this area.

2ND AMENDMENT
Teachers who are licensed to carry should be allowed to carry guns at school.
Neutral
I would be opposed to an open carry policy. I’d prefer Tasers to be carried by teachers vs. a gun. A standard concealed carry license would not be enough for me. However, if there are Security Resource Officers (SRO’s) / Police Officers at the school and they are allowed to carry a gun, then a teacher could be. There would need to be at a minimum the same training as the SRO’s, regular mental health checkups, and a high level of security measures put in place for me to consider this.

OTHER IMPORTANT ISSUES
Under what circumstances (if any) should schools be allowed to require vaccinations?
Vaccines that have been completely approved (not under emergency authorization measures) and have been proven not to have negative side effects. Essentially, at this time, the standard vaccines approved prior to 2018.

I support mask mandates.
Disagree
There would need to be an extra-ordinary health or environmental event for me to approve of a mask mandate. As a society, we overreacted to COVID and this hurt our children’s mental health and educational well-being.

Is there anything else you would like voters to know about you?
I am running for school board because I care about the community that I was raised in and I am an alumnus of the educational system. I have children in this community and I want it to be the best that it can be so that they too can become part of the alumni. Our children are our legacy and we will be judged by future generations by what we do and do not do to help the younger generation(s) continue on to improve upon each other. I have a three pillars of: children first, partnership in education (parental rights), and fiscal responsibility.

Who is responsible for teaching sexual education to children, and what is the appropriate age when it should be taught?
Parents are the initial educators for sex. Schools certainly have a role to play in this area, but it is limited to the areas such as: biology and physical changes that occur during adolescence.
