QUESTIONNAIRE

RIGHT TO LIFE

Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive taxpayer funds from federal, state, or local governments (including Title X grants).

Strongly Disagree

I believe human life begins a conception, and I also believe in and support a woman's right to choose whether or not to terminate a pregnancy, in consultation with her doctor and according to her faith. I definitely do not think this should be a decision made by the courts or legislative bodies.

Under what circumstances should an elective abortion be allowed?

At any time the mother determines up to fifteen weeks, and any time after that for the health and well being of the mother.

Human life deserves legal protection from conception until natural death.

Choose not to answer

As stated above, I believe a woman has a right to choose. I strongly believe human life should be protected from birth until natural death. There should be full Neo-natal care, support for mothers and children, affordable health care for all, and no death penalty.

The lives of human embryos created through artificial methods ought to be protected from purposeful destruction.

Strongly Disagree

Many families rely on IVF in order to have a family. I have a niece and nephew because my sister had IVF. A goal of sustaining human embryos would be desirable, but not required.

The Comstock Act, which bans interstate transportation of abortion-inducing drugs, should be enforced.

Strongly Disagree

ECONOMY

What is your position on the minimum wage?

I support a minimum wage of $15 per hour. Anyone who is working full time should be able to survive on their own.

Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.

Strongly Agree

I am not a communist and I am not a socialist. I am a capitalist who believes that the market needs to have the widest participation of players as possible, without regard to race, sex, gender identity, or ethnicity. I also believe the market works best with a level playing field, which means monopolies and the consolidation of a wealthy few to control the market is anti-capitalist. A level playing field means free high quality education for all Texans, along with affordable health care.

List your top 3-5 priorities to eliminate government waste.

1. End vouchers for public elementary and secondary schools. 2. Cease giving tax subsidies for data centers. 3. Cease underwriting the very profitable oil and gas industry.

RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

What does "separation of church and state" mean to you?

Separation of church and state means the state cannot force, induce, or direct religious doctrine. It means that the various religious entities in Texas have great freedom to organize their doctrines, disciplines, and worship as they choose. It also means religious entities are free to critique government policies or politicians they disagree with, but they cannot enforce those disagreements through the government.

Individuals and businesses should be required to provide services even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.

Agree

If the people who own the business have decided certain members of the public are not worthy of their products and services, then they have a right to refuse. But the public also has a right to inform the public discourse that this discrimination is part of that business, and they have a right to organize boycotts and cancellations of orders made if they disagree with a business' policies.

HEALTHCARE

What most closely matches your view on healthcare: A) Healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare option. (includes "universal healthcare," "medicare for all," etc.) B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options. C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary. D) Taxpayer funded health care should be abolished in all forms, and Medicaid and Medicare should be defunded.

My response is A, healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare option. Too many insurance companies are getting wealthy off of the healthcare needs of Americans. Take them out of the equation and make healthcare accessible to all. If we had a private option, inevitably there would providers who only take private insurance. It is best to have a level playing field when it comes to healthcare.

The government should keep a database of people with various ongoing medical illnesses to assess the economic burden of treatment.

Strongly Disagree

No.

NATIONAL SECURITY

The Chinese Communist Party poses serious military, cyber security, intellectual property, and global economic threats to the United States.

Agree

Is the United States' relationship with Israel important, and if so why?

Yes, the United States' relationship with Israel is important. And the US should use all of its influence to work for and assure a two-state solution for Israelis and Palestinians. When Israel was founded in 1948 the Palestinians were forced off of the land that had been their home since the time of Jesus or longer. Many Palestinians are Christians who are being insulted by literally being spit on by some Israelis. Hamas is evil, and the current Israeli government has committed war crimes too.

IMMIGRATION

I support the existence of sanctuary cities to protect undocumented persons.

Agree

ICE is an abuse of law enforcement and an insult to our citizens and good cops everywhere. Sanctuary cities who are providing legal and helpful humanitarian support should be allowed.

EDUCATION

I support eliminating the U.S. Department of Education and giving control back to states and communities.

Strongly Disagree

Education is a local, statewide, and national concern, and it takes all of us. The Department of Education has been a good and powerful resource for the children and parents of America. Education is the skeleton on the body politic so we have an informed citizenry.

Foreign governments should be prohibited from funding American education.

Agree

Foreign governments should stay out of public education. Private schools are another matter, and another reason we should end the voucher program. But if a foreign government is underwriting education at any level it should be transparent and a matter of public record.

VALUES

Government should recognize and support the fundamental right and essential duty of parents to direct their child's health and educational well-being.

Agree

Yes, as the primary but not the only influence on children's lives.

Attempts to physically or socially transition a child to the opposite sex constitute child abuse.

Disagree

If a parent is assisting a child who perceives that their gender identity is different than their birth gender it should not be a crime to assist that child with the social issues. The law should prohibit physical transition before the age of 18 but parents should not be accused of child abuse for helping a child with social issues.

Marriage is a God-ordained, sacred and legal union of one man and one woman. No government has the authority to alter this definition.

Strongly Disagree

Marriage is the legal union of two adult human beings, regardless of whether or not they are opposite sex or same sex.

I support the expansion of gambling in my state.

Strongly Disagree

Gambling is an addictive activity that should be strictly governed and regulated, and should be prohibited for people under the age of 21.

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

I begin every day by splashing my face with water three times, each in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Then I look at myself in the mirror and make the sign of the cross on my forehead as I say, "You are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ's own for ever." I pray Morning Prayer every day according to the Book of Common Prayer of the Episcopal Church. I am a priest of the Episcopal Church and I strive to follow the Baptismal Covenant of that church in all aspects of life, including striving for justice and peace, among all people, respecting the dignity of every human being.

ELECTIONS AND VOTING

People should be able to vote without photo identification.

Agree

People should be allowed to register to vote with any valid form of government identification such as a birth certificate, Social Security card, driver license, or passport. Any registered voter should be allowed to vote.

EQUALITY

Reparations should be given to people on the basis of race.

Choose not to answer

Biological males should not be allowed to participate in women's sports or occupy biological women's spaces whether it be bathrooms, locker rooms, sorority houses, women's shelters, or prison.

Disagree

Biological males should not be allowed to participate in women's sports. Legal adults who have transitioned from one sex to the other should be allowed to use bathrooms, locker rooms, sorority houses, shelters, and prison according to their sex.

ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT

Man-made climate change is a global threat and requires urgent political action.

Strongly Agree

Man-made climate change is literally changing the face of the earth, such as the recent glacial disaster in Nepal. The gradual disappearance of coastlines, extreme weather such as two consecutive "100 year floods" in the Texas Hill Country, the disappearance of species, the disappearance of drinking water in Corpus Christi, and many other examples are signs that humans are having a negative impact on the climate and we have an existential threat that must addressed.

What do you believe is the most reliable energy source that will supply the growing demand for electricity?

The combined energy sources of oil, gas, solar, wind, hydrogen, geothermal, and nuclear should be responsibly used to provide the growing demand for electricity, while trying to reduce that demand with smart choices in appliances, and transportation.

ABOUT YOU

When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?

Lean Liberal

Have you ever been penalized for sexual misconduct in either civil or criminal court? If so, please explain.

No.

Have you ever been convicted of a felony? If so, please explain.

No.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY

What should be the goal of the criminal justice system?

I believe in restorative criminal justice prior to punitive criminal justice. This begins with juvenile justice where young people receive counseling and get the support they need to change before it is too late. I have experience as a priest working with juvenile and drug courts in helping people recover and lead productive lives free of crime. This does not mean every person is a candidate for restoration, and some people, sadly, belong behind bars for the rest of their lives.

Government has a responsibility to protect children from sexual exploitation during online activities.

Strongly Agree

Sharia law should not be accepted or incorporated in any form within the legal framework of the United States.

Agree

Sharia law in Islam is a code of ethics and behavior that does not intend to replace United States jurisprudence. In fact, Sharia law supports following civil laws.

2ND AMENDMENT

What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?

I am a hunter and a shooter. I believe in the Second Amendment. I have lost a brother and a son to suicide with handguns purchased two days before they took their lives. I believe there should be a seven day waiting period before the purchase of handguns. Most violence happens between people who know each other. Suicide and domestic violence are preventable with proper safeguards, such as a waiting period, red flag laws, background checks where ever guns are sold, raising the minimum age to 21.
