QUESTIONNAIRE
RIGHT TO LIFE
Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive taxpayer funds from federal, state, or local governments (including Title X grants).
Agree
Under what circumstances should an elective abortion be allowed?
Rape, incest, life of the mother.
Human life deserves legal protection from conception until natural death.
Disagree
Human life is not viable at conception. Until it is, the mother is in control, not the government.
The lives of human embryos created through artificial methods ought to be protected from purposeful destruction.
Neutral
I think it depends on the stage of development, and the reason for the purposeful destruction. For example, if the embryo is severely damaged, for example, no brain development, then maybe that is the right decision. But these are never easy decisions and there will always be differences of opinion.
The Comstock Act, which bans interstate transportation of abortion-inducing drugs, should be enforced.
Disagree
If an abortion inducing drug is available to a US citizen, then that citizen should be able to buy and take that drug with them. Just like guns can be transported, or almost any other type of medicine.
ECONOMY
What is your position on the minimum wage?
I personally think it should be high enough to meet the poverty level. The cost of living has risen greatly since we last raised the minimum wage. By not raising it, we as a state are basically requiring both parents to work, not ideal for a family.
Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.
Strongly Agree
List your top 3-5 priorities to eliminate government waste.
1. Consolidate managerial and executive positions in all areas of state supported work. 2. Quit giving tax breaks to the rich and powerful corporations. These breaks cost everyone else. 3. Work with the tribes in Oklahoma, not against them. Many of them provide services to their members much better than the State does.
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
What does "separation of church and state" mean to you?
You are free to go to the church of your choice, and you are also free not to go to a church. Your government makes decisions for all citizens, not based on church doctrine. Your church shares its gospel with their members, without government intervention.
Individuals and businesses should be required to provide services even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.
Agree
I agree up to a point. A medical caregiver, nurse, doctor, etc. should never refuse giving aid to someone in need because of moral or religious beliefs. The patient is a human being. If you have problems with that, get out of any profession that has to do with health. Outside of that, I believe your business has the right to refuse service to anyone. I think it is devisive, but you as a private business owner should have that right.
HEALTHCARE
What most closely matches your view on healthcare: A) Healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare option. (includes "universal healthcare," "medicare for all," etc.) B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options. C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary. D) Taxpayer funded health care should be abolished in all forms, and Medicaid and Medicare should be defunded.
B or C are both close matches to my views. My preference would be for Medicare for all retirees over 65, all disabled, and all young people from birth to age 21 who do not have any other insurance. From 21 to 65, you should pay for your own healthcare if you are able to work.
The government should keep a database of people with various ongoing medical illnesses to assess the economic burden of treatment.
Neutral
Whether I agree or not, the government, the health sector, the insurance sector, ALL keep this type of database. We are a capitalistic society, and unfortunately, economic burden makes many medical decisions for us. Either as an individual, or as a corporation, the costs of treatment are weighted against the outcome of the treatment. I understand the need to do this, but I don't like that lives are often shortened by the potential costs of care.
NATIONAL SECURITY
The Chinese Communist Party poses serious military, cyber security, intellectual property, and global economic threats to the United States.
Agree
Whether they were Communist or not (they are more capitalist than we think), they are our strongest economic and military opponent. There economy has exploded due to their expansion into the world economy and trade with other countries. So they are obviously a counter to us and must be watched carefully. It's a Cold War all over again.
Is the United States' relationship with Israel important, and if so why?
It is important to support Israel as we have a long history of friendship and we share many of the same goals. However, I believe leadership in both the US and Israel need to take a long look at their goals for the Middle East and whether current objectives are doing more harm than good. Israel will always have to co-exist with its neighbors; constant war and potential genocide will not bring peace.
IMMIGRATION
I support the existence of sanctuary cities to protect undocumented persons.
Agree
If a city chooses to value the life of an individual in the face of the government, let them work it out in the court system. Some should still be deported, but some are caught up in the new definition of what "undocumented" is. When a college student is pulled out of school by ICE and deported to a land not known to them, and they were here legally to begin with, don't let a paper mistake or a missed appointment justify treating them like a murderer. They are not all "the worst of the worst".
EDUCATION
I support eliminating the U.S. Department of Education and giving control back to states and communities.
Agree
I think there should be a smaller Dept of Ed that helps government set minimum guidelines for Education in our Nation so we can continue to compete on the world stage with countries that value their children's education more than we value ours. But yes, various states and communities should have more control over their region, provided their are no Constitutional issues.
Foreign governments should be prohibited from funding American education.
Neutral
If foreign governments have students legally here to study, then those governments should fund their students for the costs of being here. I don't know of any other instance of foreign dollars being used to fund American education, but my point applies to the statement in the first sentence.
VALUES
Government should recognize and support the fundamental right and essential duty of parents to direct their child's health and educational well-being.
Agree
As long as we meet a minimum standard that keeps our children healthy and have quality education available, then I believe the parents should be able to make many of those choices for their child. But if their choices create harmful situations for other children, then the government can intervene. It is also a parent's duty not to place others in harm's way through their choices.
Attempts to physically or socially transition a child to the opposite sex constitute child abuse.
Neutral
If your child is having gender conflict, a parent trying to help their child to be comfortable in their own skin is not child abuse. What should happen is counseling and a better understanding of what the child is going through. I think to physically transform a child under 18 is wrong, just as I think forcing a child with physical evidence of both sexes to be what a judge says they should be is just as wrong. Ultimately, counseling, prayer, and acceptance are all parts of the eventual solution.
Marriage is a God-ordained, sacred and legal union of one man and one woman. No government has the authority to alter this definition.
Disagree
Nothing sacred about marriage. Half end in divorce, so sacred went out the window a long time ago. Legal definitions change with every generation. Who you love is who you love, no book can tell you different. Your marriage is ordained by you and your partner, whoever that may be. Lives have been destroyed by people telling you how to live rather than letting you live your own life.
I support the expansion of gambling in my state.
Neutral
Gambling is going to happen, but it is addictive for some people. Governments love to get their hands on the taxes from gambling winnings. Our state wants to charge the Tribes with giving our state a bigger share, while lowering state income taxes, so a government relying on another entity's gambling taxes is very problematic. Gambling is too available as it is. I like the idea of casinos attracting out of state gamblers, but I don't like the idea of having it too easily accessible to all.
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
I am a follower of Jesus. I believe in God and Christian principles. I follow the Golden Rule. I am not evangelistic. I believe all people find their own spiritual path. God has given me a life full of experiences, and a brain to make choices. I speak to Him every day. I value my life here and in the next world. I respect all religions and cultures. God made us all but he didn't make us all alike. Different cultures have different religions.
ELECTIONS AND VOTING
People should be able to vote without photo identification.
Agree
When applying for registration to vote, one should produce identification to get registered. Voter registration should be tied to your state ID or Drivers license so that producing it also verifies you are registered to vote. This should eliminate any questions as to voter eligibility and identity. Some want to require a birth certificate at every election. No, prove your identity one time, and put it on an ID. Personal ID should always be free.
EQUALITY
Reparations should be given to people on the basis of race.
Neutral
Difficult question. We enslaved people, freed them, and in my lifetime we still treat many of their descendants like second class citizens. We had programs to help many who had faced racism (i.e.,Affirmative Action) but we choose not to do that anymore. Our reparations should be to treat everyone equally, with no exceptions. We as a country have a hard time with that. I hope we grow out of it soon.
Biological males should not be allowed to participate in women's sports or occupy biological women's spaces whether it be bathrooms, locker rooms, sorority houses, women's shelters, or prison.
Agree
I agree that biological males should not participate in women's sports. They have a different DNA which gives them physical attributes which are male based and not like females. Let them compete in an open division if they want, but not in the womens divisions. As far as the other items, what if they are born with vestiges of both sexes? If they were listed as a female when born, but their male organs developed and they dress like a boy, who decides? The principal? A judge? Himself?
ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT
Man-made climate change is a global threat and requires urgent political action.
Agree
No doubt that human activity has affected the climate. And we are not making any progress on stopping it. It will take worldwide action, not just one country. However, on the continental level, wouldn't it be nice to clean up pollution and have cleaner air, clean lakes and streams, a better quality of life? Because all that is disappearing just as quickly as the climate is changing. Unfortunately, our descendants will have to deal with it and wonder why we didn't do something about it.
What do you believe is the most reliable energy source that will supply the growing demand for electricity?
There is not one most reliable; there are many sources that are available and all will be needed soon. Natural gas is plentiful. Not excited about nuclear power in OK; we don't do well with oil and gas waste, but nuclear waste is much much worse.
ABOUT YOU
When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?
Moderate
My mother's family were Choctaw and Republican; my father's family were European and Democratic. I know most of this country is either side of the middle. We govern best when we govern for the majority instead of letting the fringes of either side run things. I tend to see things both ways, I lean left or right depending on the issue, and I worry when the middle is ignored. I will vote with this in mind. Life is not a level plain.
Have you ever been penalized for sexual misconduct in either civil or criminal court? If so, please explain.
No.
Have you ever been convicted of a felony? If so, please explain.
No.
CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY
What should be the goal of the criminal justice system?
Bring justice and reparations to the victims, and both criminal and financial punishment to the guilty parties. Based on the laws as provided for by the Constitution of the United States.
Government has a responsibility to protect children from sexual exploitation during online activities.
Strongly Agree
Government should do everything they can to protect our children from predators. But this doesn't relieve the parents from that same responsibility.
Sharia law should not be accepted or incorporated in any form within the legal framework of the United States.
Agree
Any law in the US should follow, and be provided within the framework of the Constitution. Religion, while separate from the State, does influence many of those who serve in our Government, so many of their ideals are often based on their spiritual understanding. We should seek laws that reflect the will of the people, not of a religion, or culture, but of the America our forefathers envisioned, with liberty and justice for all.
2ND AMENDMENT
What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?
In my opinion, and I have owned shotguns and rifles much of my life, is that automatic, rapid fire weapons are more dangerous than protective. I believe in the Second Amendment but the number of killings by automatic weapons is the biggest stain we wear as a Republic. Lets add a little common sense to our 2nd Amendment rights and gun laws. The conversation is underway.
