QUESTIONNAIRE

RIGHT TO LIFE

Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive taxpayer funds from federal, state, or local governments (including Title X grants).

Strongly Disagree

I ask you this- what does Planned Parenthood do besides abortion care? The organization's most used services are STI/STD testing and treatment. The list also includes contraception, cancer screening and prevention, mammograms, pap smears, and prenatal care. Abortions count for approximately 3% of all services. Do taxpayer funds go to abortion care, or does that funding come from private donors? Do not let the word "abortion" distract you from all of the types of care organizations can offer.

Under what circumstances should an elective abortion be allowed?

I believe that it is a decision best left between the patient and their care provider.

Human life deserves legal protection from conception until natural death.

Neutral

The Jewish people believe that life begins at first breath. Where does that ideal belong in terms of consideration of when life begins and thus legal protection starts? Lives deserve legal protections, yes, and I believe that those are worthy of thoughtful discussion. What is natural death? Does natural death include cancer? Does natural death include autoimmune diseases without a cure? Does natural death include assisted suicide? Where do we find balance between legality and morality?

The lives of human embryos created through artificial methods ought to be protected from purposeful destruction.

Neutral

I compare this statement to the philosophical argument of whether a person on life support with no brain activity is either alive or dead. Do we decide to keep a person on life support when there is no chance of quality of life? What protections are in place for the person on life support? Who decides if they should be taken off of life support? If we look at this through that lens, that comparison, what is my answer? Leave the decision to the patient and their provider.

The Comstock Act, which bans interstate transportation of abortion-inducing drugs, should be enforced.

Strongly Disagree

An Act passed in 1873, casts a wide net. Not only does it consider the above, but can be argued to apply to medical equipment used in obstetric care. This includes forceps and ultrasound equipment- if the argument is strong enough. What purpose does this Act serve? These drugs include a progesterone blocker and an oxytocin supplement. These medications can be used to treat Cushing's Syndrome and improve the contractions during childbirth, respectively.

ECONOMY

What is your position on the minimum wage?

Minimum wage needs to be increased. West Virginia has had their minimum wage set at $8.75 an hour since 2016. Before that it was $8.00 at the beginning of 2015 from $7.25. This is showing a pattern of increase of $.75 a year before the end of 2016.

Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.

Neutral

I agree that a right to private property is important for a productive economic system, but I disagree to unregulated free enterprise. As a pro-union candidate, government protections for unions and union members do no exist in free enterprise. Government involvement should be involved to protect the rights and freedoms of the employees; which includes safety standards, pay, and transparent business practices.

List your top 3-5 priorities to eliminate government waste.

1. Better money management with greater oversight into government-funded programs. 2. Appropriate taxation so that funds are available to provide fellow West Virginians the hand-up they need. 3. Audit the Governor's discretionary funds so that we know where our taxpayer dollars are going if not to help the most vulnerable West Virginians.

RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

What does "separation of church and state" mean to you?

Separation of church and state means that religious beliefs and practices should not be a basis for law and legislature. This also means that law and legislature should not dictate, as examples, how people pray or how they practice faith behind closed doors.

Individuals and businesses should be required to provide services even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.

Disagree

There are a lot of "what ifs" to this statement. Individuals and businesses that have moral and/or religious beliefs should first make it well-known what they choose to be beyond the scope of their services to their potential consumers. That way consumers understand what that individual or business is not willing to do before even deciding to do business with them. Discrimination of a minority group is not acceptable when determining moral and/or religious belief.

HEALTHCARE

What most closely matches your view on healthcare: A) Healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare option. (includes "universal healthcare," "medicare for all," etc.) B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options. C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary. D) Taxpayer funded health care should be abolished in all forms, and Medicaid and Medicare should be defunded.

I believe "B" is most in line with my view of healthcare. Those with private insurance that do not wish to pay into medicaid or medicare would not be able to benefit from it, only from the insurance they purchase.

The government should keep a database of people with various ongoing medical illnesses to assess the economic burden of treatment.

Neutral

The phrase, "to assess the economic burden of treatment," leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Does this mean to restrict care for those who cost more to treat? Does this mean for research studies? Does this mean to look for regional trends?

NATIONAL SECURITY

The Chinese Communist Party poses serious military, cyber security, intellectual property, and global economic threats to the United States.

Disagree

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) does pose a large cyber security risk to the United States, but so do most countries; including our allies. The CCP can pose a serious military threat to us, but if it came to a military conflict, there would be mutually assured destruction. Intellectual property threats do not make sense. A threat to the economy by the CCP is only relevant if they provide a greater trade deal than we can.

Is the United States' relationship with Israel important, and if so why?

I think it's important for us to end the relationship. The United States uses taxpayer money (our money) to provide them with weapons, free healthcare, free education, etc. for nothing substantial in return. The argument that they are a democracy in the middle east and that they need to be protected is unfounded. I see the carnage and destruction much like the rest of my fellow Americans. If they can so brutally expand, they obviously don't need our help anymore.

IMMIGRATION

I support the existence of sanctuary cities to protect undocumented persons.

Neutral

Right now both undocumented and documented persons, regardless of whether they are in a sanctuary city or not, are in danger. I support pathways to citizenship and equitable immigrant stays.

EDUCATION

I support eliminating the U.S. Department of Education and giving control back to states and communities.

Strongly Disagree

The U.S. Department of Education is responsible for federal education funding, which includes Title I funds for low-income communities and funding for students with disabilities; it oversees federal special-education law, investigates federally-funded school discrimination claims, collects education data and statistics for research, and higher-education oversight. All of these things we need in place to help delegate responsibility and not overburden states and communities with these tasks.

Foreign governments should be prohibited from funding American education.

Disagree

I believe we should permit legitimate foreign funding but require full disclosure and transparency, prohibit funding tied to foreign influence or control, and impose stronger restrictions on governments considered national-security threats.

VALUES

Government should recognize and support the fundamental right and essential duty of parents to direct their child's health and educational well-being.

Neutral

The government already does these things. Hence why we have youth that are able to participate in home schooling and allow parents to deny their children medical care based on beliefs. I am curious what "support" looks like.

Attempts to physically or socially transition a child to the opposite sex constitute child abuse.

Neutral

The statement combines medical intervention, social behavior, and the legal concept of child abuse into a single proposition, and therefore an Agree/Disagree answer would not accurately reflect my position. All I can say, with the limited space I have to write this, is that I want children to be happy, healthy, and supported in their communities.

Marriage is a God-ordained, sacred and legal union of one man and one woman. No government has the authority to alter this definition.

Strongly Disagree

If marriage had no legal benefits or drawbacks and no sway on taxation, perhaps. As it is more than ceremony, including legal documentation and fiscal aspects, the government has been accepted as an authority for centuries. If marriage were only a social contract I'd see no reason why people couldn't believe it is as the statement says, but I believe that marriage is between two consenting adults who have decided to form a union together.

I support the expansion of gambling in my state.

Neutral

I neither support it nor condemn it. What I do support is having a variety of resources available to the communities that can be used to treat gambling addiction. It is not my right to prohibit others from making these choices, but that doesn't mean I won't support those in crisis who wish to seek treatment for the choices they have made.

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

My spiritual beliefs and values touch on a multitude of faiths and traditions. I do not ascribe myself to a specific religion, only the teachings that I can use to make myself a better person. Across all of the religions, faiths, and creeds that I have studied, I find that one thing is universal- treating each other with kindness. There are many connections between religions and paths to enlightenment, ranging from the Christ figure to the Buddha, with the message of helping others and finding inner peace. My values are to be kind and accepting to those you do not know, forgive to bring yourself peace, stand up for those who cannot do so themselves, and make choices that you think make the world a better place.

ELECTIONS AND VOTING

People should be able to vote without photo identification.

Agree

I think any valid form of identification should be useable to identify voters. People in impoverished communities who may not have access to photo identification but can provide another form of identification should be given the same respect and decency as those who can easily travel and receive photo identification.

EQUALITY

Reparations should be given to people on the basis of race.

Agree

I believe that the best way to provide reparations is in the form of community investment. Take black communities for example: government reparations in neighborhoods that were affected by historically discriminatory practices would look like investment in housing, infrastructure, schools, healthcare, and/or economic development.

Biological males should not be allowed to participate in women's sports or occupy biological women's spaces whether it be bathrooms, locker rooms, sorority houses, women's shelters, or prison.

Neutral

I think we need to reexamine how we look at things since our society has evolved and changed. Instead of women's and men's sports, we implement co-ed weight classes much like in boxing, martial arts, wrestling, etc. Instead of gendered bathrooms and locker rooms, we use single occupant bathrooms and changing rooms, or even perhaps hire attendants for these spaces who would not only keep these spaces clean but provide a level of oversight. There is much more to say but not enough room remains.

ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT

Man-made climate change is a global threat and requires urgent political action.

Strongly Agree

We see even now throughout the world the number of weather disasters destroying communities that have left people with nothing in times of scarcity, with no decrease in severity for years to come. Only through reducing the pollutants we put into our environment will we see a return to normalcy. That includes decreases in carbon emissions, pushing for renewable energy sources, investing in technology that doesn't require rare minerals, and no more mountaintop removal.

What do you believe is the most reliable energy source that will supply the growing demand for electricity?

I believe solar energy is most reliable. Even in periods where sunlight is not as noticeable, solar panels still collect certain levels of solar energy. Combine that with battery storage allows for energy use even at night.

ABOUT YOU

When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?

Liberal

I believe in a happy, healthy, and more well-connected West Virginia. I believe that people shouldn't have to choose between food, medications, or housing to avoid poverty. People should have the opportunity to build a life they wish to have, be provided a fulfilling education, feel a part of their community, and have all of their basic needs met. We must build bridges if we are to grow, find common ground, and remember that we are all human.

Have you ever been penalized for sexual misconduct in either civil or criminal court? If so, please explain.

No.

Have you ever been convicted of a felony? If so, please explain.

No.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY

What should be the goal of the criminal justice system?

The criminal justice system should have the goal of rehabilitation as often as possible. There will be caveats for those who society must be protected from, but by in large we shouldn't lock people away to rot.

Government has a responsibility to protect children from sexual exploitation during online activities.

Strongly Agree

I often say that it is a caregiver's responsibility to monitor their child's activity online, but it is not realistic to put that responsibility squarely on their shoulders as they cannot watch them 24/7. Government needs to provide common-sense practices to help stave off exploitation of minors on social media, online gaming, and community apps.

Sharia law should not be accepted or incorporated in any form within the legal framework of the United States.

Agree

The separation of church and state is the representation of disallowing any form of religious dictum.

2ND AMENDMENT

What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?

Gun safety and gun laws are too broad of a topic to provide a clear answer. I live in West Virginia where guns are a way of life. They can be what puts food on the table or to protect your land from wild animals that would kill pets and/or livestock.
