Human life does not begin at conception, human life predates conception. The question is not whether human life has value, but whether the government should have the power to control a woman’s pregnancy and make deeply personal medical decisions for her. Women should have the freedom to decide when to have a family and whether the risks of pregnancy are acceptable for them, in consultation with their healthcare providers.

I believe in reproductive freedom, including the freedom to make deeply personal decisions about pregnancy without politicians interfering. Government should not use the power of the purse to punish healthcare providers or make it harder for people, especially those who cannot afford care, to access the healthcare they need. Taxpayer dollars should pay for the healthcare services that taxpayers are entitled to receive.

This legislation is unnecessary because intentional harm or neglect of a live-born infant is already illegal. This bill is political in natural, not medical. It seeks to criminalizes doctor, interfere with sensitive end-of-life palliative care decisions, and intimidate reproductive health care providers.

Abortion should be allowed when a woman, in consultation with her healthcare provider, decides that continuing a pregnancy isn't right for her. That can include circumstances like a pregnancy resulting from rape or incest, serious fetal abnormalities, risks to the woman's health or life, or circumstances where she knows for personally inherent reasons that she cannot continue with the pregnancy. There's an important distinction between saying "I wouldn't choose an abortion" and saying "the government should prevent someone else from choosing one." I understand the first. I don't support the second.

A person who works full time should be able to support themselves and their family- with one job. Government has a responsibility to make sure the rules of our economy allow that to be possible, through things like fair wages, affordable healthcare and childcare, good schools, and protections for workers. When people still can't meet their basic needs, I believe government has a responsibility to make sure no one is left without food, housing, healthcare, or the ability to live with dignity.

I support private enterprise and property rights, but I don't believe "free enterprise" should mean an economy without rules. Government's role should be to establish equitable rules of the game and make sure our economy rewards productive work and entrepreneurship rather than simply rewarding whoever already has the most power and wealth. "Trickle down economics" has been shown to be theft from local economies, not a valid political theory.

A person's financial circumstances shouldn't determine whether they have the opportunity to pursue higher education. If someone has the ability and desire to go to college, Government should make sure cost isn't a barrier to this economically positive and personally enriching path. But the broader goal should be giving every person the opportunity to build a good life on their terms, not requiring everyone to follow the same educational path.

Fiscal responsibility means making sure every taxpayer dollar is producing value for the public, not just making the budget number smaller. I would look for waste, unnecessary subsidies, and spending that primarily benefits private interests.

Strongly Disagree

The government should not tell you what your marriage has to look like, and it shouldn't tell your neighbor what theirs has to look like either. Religious freedom means the government should not compel someone to change their beliefs about marriage. And in defense of the exact same kind of freedom, the government should not to impose one groups beliefs on others. In regard to law, marriage is a civil legal status between consenting adults, regardless of sexual orientation, religion, or ideology.

Religious freedom is foundational to our democracy. But freedom must be equal and impartial, with the government as a neutral defender of the rights of all. Only then can the government fulfill its responsibility to protect both religious freedom and equal treatment under the law. We should be able to hold different beliefs, live according to those beliefs, and still share a country where everyone has the same rights and freedoms- treating others the way we would want to be treated.

Yes

Christians should be free to practice their faith according to their beliefs, without infringing on the equal rights and freedoms of others. Religious liberty means protecting the freedom to practice Christianity without government interference, while ensuring that government is not in any way an accomplice to imposing the particular beliefs of any religion, including Christianity, on the rest of the community. I will defend that freedom for people of every faith or no faith, equally.

To me, separation of church and state means government must not establish or favor a religion, or interfere with the free exercise of one. Government action should be purposefully secular, neither advancing or inhibiting religion, and avoiding excessive government entanglement with religion. The framers of our Constitution sought to protect religious liberty specifically by preventing any implementation of state-sanctioned or state-imposed religion, and I support that vision.
