QUESTIONNAIRE

RIGHT TO LIFE

Human life deserves legal protection from conception until natural death.

Strongly Disagree

The law clearly delegates rights and protections of citizenship to those born. My personal belief borne of my Christian faith is that ensoulment occurs at first breath. Exodus 21:22 outlines that between conception and birth the fetus is reckoned as property of the parents (of the father in particular).

The lives of human embryos created through artificial methods ought to be protected from purposeful destruction.

Strongly Disagree

These tissues should be treated according to the mother’s wishes. The government should have no part in overriding her choices.

Under what circumstances should an elective abortion be allowed?

Elective abortion should always be allowed. The decision should rest with the pregnant woman in consultation with her doctor. All abortion decisions involve the health of the mother. In the US 30 deaths occur per 100,000 live births. Skydiving results in 0.23 to 0.5 deaths per 100,000.

Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should receive taxpayer funds from federal, state, or local governments (including Title X grants).

Strongly Agree

It is important that organizations providing family planning and obstetric services be properly funded and able to serve all communities.

The Comstock Act, which bans interstate transportation of abortion-inducing drugs, should be enforced.

Strongly Disagree

Enforcement of the act would violate equal protection rights in my judgment. It is my opinion that the Comstock Act has multiple provisions that are unconstitutional and that legislation overturning it would be the most appropriate resolution in order to provide clarity for enforcement.

ECONOMY

Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.

Agree

Though essential, they should not be absolute. Essential utilities and services should be considered outside of the scope of free enterprise such as highways, healthcare, and the electric grid.

People who can afford to pay more taxes should do so in order to provide relief for working families.

Strongly Agree

I believe a much more aggressive progressive taxation schedule would address the most concerning issues of our tax policy. Eliminating caps on contributions to Social Security and Medicare would also be appropriate to see solvency to these critical programs. A tax schedule similar to that in Eisenhower’s administration adjusted for inflation would be my recommendation, phased in over 10+ years.

The government should cut spending in order to reduce the national debt.

Agree

Cuts to spending should come from areas of government spending that would make the most efficient changes to deficits. Cuts to military spending should be first and second in line. Our government is by the people and for the people. Our tax revenue should be spent making them safer and healthier. At this time we are not prioritizing spending that creates the most benefit to the taxpayer.

List your top 3-5 priorities to eliminate government waste.

Campaign finance reform is first and foremost. Overturning Citizens United is the first step towards making our government responsive to the needs of its people. Government contracts being given to the donor class are not in the best interest of the taxpayer. We must return to competitive bidding that is free from bias and upholds ethical standards. Congressional deadlock results in avoidance of long term planning and solutions. We waste every time we pass a CR rather than a true budget.

RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

Individuals and businesses should be required to provide services even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.

Strongly Agree

They should not be required to provide services that are not part of their normal business practice. However, if they provide a product or service, it should be available to anyone and should not be subject to refusal based on their personal or religious judgments of the purchaser.

What does "separation of church and state" mean to you?

Separation of Church and State means a barrier between government interference on the free exercise of religion by a person of group in as much as it does not infringe on the rights and liberties of others. It also means that any one religious group should not be preferred within the State. No religion should be recognized as an official state religion and no religious text should be used to govern citizens that have a right to freely exercise their own religion be it theist or atheist.

HEALTHCARE

What most closely matches your view on healthcare: A) Healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare option. (includes "universal healthcare," "medicare for all," etc.) B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options. C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary. D) Taxpayer funded health care should be abolished in all forms, and Medicaid and Medicare should be defunded.

A. My preferred method of delivering healthcare would be Medicare for All. This would eliminate not just private health insurance and all of their intermediaries (ie PBMs) but also Medicaid, Tri Care, and the VA. Plans would exist with premiums (medicare tax) based on income that increases progressively similar to the income tax structure.

The government should keep a database of people with various ongoing medical illnesses to assess the economic burden of treatment.

Neutral

A detailed database seems unnecessary. General statistical information in a database without identifying information should suffice for guiding budgeting decisions.

NATIONAL SECURITY

With regard to America's foreign policy, which view most closely resembles yours: A) The United States should intervene whenever freedom is threatened. B) The United States should selectively help countries trying to grow democracy and fight tyranny. C) The United States has become too involved in others' policies and should remain focused on issues regarding our own sovereignty unless in imminent danger. D) The United States should stay out of foreign conflicts completely.

I most closely align with C. We should foster strong alliances and build soft power through out the world. Unilateral aggression is not only wrong but does not serve the interests of the American people.

The Chinese Communist Party poses serious military, cyber security, intellectual property, and global economic threats to the United States.

Strongly Agree

It is not my judgment that China is eager to be a military aggressor towards the United States. It is my judgment however that they are well positioned and prepared to do so and our actions in Venezuela and Iran as our military supply of Israel has left us vulnerable should they decide to act.

Is the United States' relationship with Israel important, and if so why?

It is important morally and strategically. What is most important is the nature of the relationship. At present we have a PM in Israel that is dictating policy to the US, misusing US military support and through AIPAC influencing US elections as a foreign government. This is harmful to the US, Israel, and the Jewish people in Israel and throughout the world.

Islamic terrorism is a threat to the United States' national security.

Agree

The threat of Islamic terrorism in the US is real. It is not the top threat. It should not make us treat our Muslim neighbors as less. That only gives terrorism fertile soil.

IMMIGRATION

Who should be allowed to immigrate to the U.S. and under what circumstances?

Anyone from anywhere seeking asylum. Anyone that wants to come here and work and raise a family while living peacefully and according to our laws. They should not be violent in their country of origin or upon arrival. They should be free of allegiance to foreign governments or organizations.

I support the existence of sanctuary cities to protect undocumented persons.

Strongly Agree

Sanctuary cities are prioritizing the safety and security of their communities without dividing their efforts and funding to perform duties that rest with the federal government. Working with the federal government for deportation activities decreases the trust between local police and their residents harming their ability to perform their primary responsibilities.

EDUCATION

I support eliminating the U.S. Department of Education and giving control back to states and communities.

Strongly Disagree

It is the job of the federal government to ensure that equal access to a positive education is available to all citizens. I think that the federal government has a responsibility and a self interest in ensuring certain benchmarks are being reached by the students that will become the citizens of tomorrow.

Foreign governments should be prohibited from funding American education.

Choose not to answer

I’m not familiar enough with the problem to respond thoughtfully. I very much support exchange programs as well as US funding for education in areas around the world.

VALUES

Attempts to physically or socially transition a child to the opposite sex constitute child abuse.

Strongly Disagree

Gender affirming care results in significant improvement in mental health outcomes including reducing moderate to severe depression, thoughts of self harm, and suicide. For children the focus is generally for social affirmation, puberty blockers, and hormone therapy. Surgical intervention is and should be reserved for adults unless their doctors judge that risk of self harm merits earlier intervention. Ultimately this process should be guided by trained physicians and therapists.

Marriage is a God-ordained, sacred and legal union of one man and one woman. No government has the authority to alter this definition.

Strongly Disagree

This is clearly not the understanding of most of the authors of biblical texts as the question seems to imply. Marriage was a social contract that involved procuring the exclusive reproductive rights of young women. Many of the pillars of biblical history were documented as having multiple wives without any text condemning the practice. I don’t agree that religious text should govern marriage law. Those spiritual rites should be for members of each faith excepting incidence of non consent.

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

I was raised with a Christian worldview. I personally practice a belief in following the teachings and example of the life of Jesus. My exegesis is built from Matthew 22:37-40 Love God, Love your neighbor as you Love yourself. All the law and the prophets hang on these two commandments. If my belief is not helping me love my neighbor with the same humble, self-sacrificing love as Jesus had for me then I re-examine my belief.

ELECTIONS AND VOTING

People should be able to vote without photo identification.

Neutral

If photo identification is required then the burden should be on the government to make a valid identification available at no cost in a timely fashion. I am much more concerned with a citizen being denied the right to cast a vote than the possibility of a fraudulent vote being cast and counted.

EQUALITY

Biological males should not be allowed to participate in women's sports or occupy biological women's spaces whether it be bathrooms, locker rooms, sorority houses, women's shelters, or prison.

Strongly Disagree

Trans women and girls are just that, women and girls. Forcing trans women into male spaces including bathrooms and locker rooms will ultimately lead to abuse of trans women. As a man my greatest responsibility is to protect the weak and the oppressed. That means ensuring trans women can use the bathroom safely, engage in the social rites of team sports, and be safe when experiencing DV or incarceration. Trans people are citizens. They are human beings. They are sons, and daughters.

ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT

What do you believe is the most reliable energy source that will supply the growing demand for electricity?

Solar energy is the current answer. We look forward to the continued promise of advances in fusion energy, but right now solar should be the focus of our energy expansion. We should place solar on all federal buildings saving taxpayers on energy.

ABOUT YOU

Have you ever been penalized for sexual misconduct in either civil or criminal court? If so, please explain.

I have not.

Have you ever been convicted of a felony? If so, please explain.

I have not.

When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?

Liberal

I consider myself a Democratic Socialist.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY

Government has a responsibility to protect children from sexual exploitation during online activities.

Strongly Agree

Safety in cyber spaces is a critical part of overall public safety. That is absolutely the responsibility of thoughtful legislators to pass laws to govern these spaces and law enforcement to enforce them. Those that would exploit vulnerable neighbors take advantage of the inaction of both legislators and law enforcement in the online space.

2ND AMENDMENT

What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?

I believe that it is time to repeal the second amendment and replace it with modern language that is clear and acknowledges the changed reality of gun ownership in the modern day. Laws to ensure secure storage limiting access to minors should be passed. I believe that possession of assault weapons should be limited to members of the national guard and the reserves and that they should be stored at armories. Open carry should be prohibited.
