QUESTIONNAIRE

RIGHT TO LIFE

Human life deserves legal protection from conception until natural death.

Disagree

I do not believe legal protection should begin at conception. Roe offered a reasonable balance: protecting a woman’s right to choose early in pregnancy while allowing greater regulation as fetal development progressed. I support that basic framework, with abortion protected through at least the first trimester, and potentially up to 20 weeks, with later exceptions for the woman’s life or health.

The lives of human embryos created through artificial methods ought to be protected from purposeful destruction.

Disagree

I am uncomfortable with destroying human embryos and believe they should be treated with respect. However, couples pursuing fertility treatment should not be required to preserve unused embryos or fear legal consequences after achieving a successful pregnancy or deciding to end treatment. That deeply personal decision should remain with the couple and their medical provider.

Under what circumstances should an elective abortion be allowed?

Elective abortion should be legally protected through at least the first trimester. I could be persuaded by credible medical and scientific evidence to extend that protection to 20 weeks. After that point, I believe the government may impose reasonable limits, though I am not arguing that it necessarily should.

Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should receive taxpayer funds from federal, state, or local governments (including Title X grants).

Strongly Agree

Planned Parenthood is an important source of healthcare for many low-income women. Denying an organization public funding solely because it provides a legal service that some people morally oppose would deprive underserved patients of essential care. As long as abortion remains legal, providing it should not disqualify Planned Parenthood from funding for its broader healthcare services.

The Comstock Act, which bans interstate transportation of abortion-inducing drugs, should be enforced.

Strongly Disagree

No. The Comstock Act is an outdated law and should not be revived to restrict access to medications that are otherwise legal. If Congress believes abortion medication requires new limits, it should debate and enact clear, modern legislation rather than relying on a nineteenth-century law written before today’s medical knowledge and standards.

ECONOMY

Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.

Agree

Yes. Free enterprise and private-property rights are essential to a productive economy because they encourage investment, innovation, competition, and individual opportunity. However, those rights are not absolute. Reasonable regulation is necessary to protect workers, consumers, communities, and fair competition while preventing fraud, exploitation, and excessive concentrations of power.

People who can afford to pay more taxes should do so in order to provide relief for working families.

Agree

Yes. People with greater financial means should contribute more through a fair, progressive tax system. Asking those who have benefited most from the economy to pay a larger share can provide meaningful relief to working families and support essential public services. Tax policy should remain balanced, however, and should not discourage investment, innovation, or economic growth.

The government should cut spending in order to reduce the national debt.

Agree

Yes, but spending cuts should be responsible and targeted rather than indiscriminate. Wasteful or ineffective programs should be reduced, while essential services and investments that support long-term growth should be protected. Because spending cuts alone may not be enough, reducing the national debt will likely require a balanced approach that also considers revenue and economic growth.
