OTHER INFORMATION
In an article by the Lynnwood Times, Hawk stated that “Our Supreme Court needs justices with broad experience, an understanding of how the laws of our state impact people and families, and a commitment to ensuring equal treatment under the law.” She further stated, “I’ve spent my career dedicated to making the promise of justice real. On the Supreme Court, I will protect your rights and freedoms, and the rule of law.”
In a press release from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Washington, Hawk described Washington’s money bail system as “fundamentally unfair” because it results in the “many harms of jailing of people in Washington before trial when they are unable to pay money bail.” Hawk further stated that “Washington’s bail practices and use of money bail is a glaring example of the reality that for people facing criminal charges in our state, there are two systems – one for the wealthy and one for the poor.”
In an article by Range Media in May 2022, Hawk, along with the ACLU, was “working with academic researchers to figure out what can be learned from keeping misdemeanor defendants out of jail during the pandemic. But for now, she feels confident in her position that counties should be offering pretrial services that are paid for by the county, not the defendant,” she stated that “There’s a lot that can be done at the county level.” Additionally, Hawk stated that “when my clients were released pretrial and I was able to work with them and their families, and they were able to keep their jobs and housing,” and stated she got better outcomes.
In a PubliCola article, the ACLU of Washington opposed challenges to the Washington Supreme Court juvenile sentencing decisions. Opponents argued the rulings allow judges to impose sentences informed by research on adolescent brain development and to correct prior excessive sentences. Jaime Hawk, legal strategy director for the ACLU of Washington’s Campaign for Smart Justice, stated that “Prosecutors will only lose power if they are recommending that a sentence be maintained that a judge would otherwise now find unjust.”
In 2025, Hawk participated in “Color of Justice” for middle school students at the court.
