QUESTIONNAIRE
RIGHT TO LIFE
Human life deserves legal protection from conception until natural death.
Agree
I generally agree with this proposition, but . . . I am in line with the "Legal, Safe, and Rare" policies that the Democrats used to support.
The lives of human embryos created through artificial methods ought to be protected from purposeful destruction.
Neutral
While IVF is a practice to provide a path for reproduction for women who are worried about the viability of their ova, I have come to believe that IVF should not be as widely used as it is. Women should be encouraged to actually enter into a life partnership/marriage and have children before IVF seems a reasonable option. Most of the impregnated cells that result do not have a path to adulthood after fertilization, not matter how much I wish they did.
Under what circumstances should an elective abortion be allowed?
In the cases of incest, rape, or an actual threat to the mother from going through delivery (although I understand the latter to be a very low rate of incidence).
Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should receive taxpayer funds from federal, state, or local governments (including Title X grants).
Strongly Disagree
The grave act of getting an abortion should be paid for by the parties who gave life to the fetus being aborted.
The Comstock Act, which bans interstate transportation of abortion-inducing drugs, should be enforced.
Agree
It's the law.
ECONOMY
Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.
Strongly Agree
Without individuals' claim to property and the returns thereto, the economic engine will slow to a crawl, leaving everybody worse off.
People who can afford to pay more taxes should do so in order to provide relief for working families.
Neutral
Most successful people provide jobs to working families. Those employees then become tax-payers as a result. That is better for the recipients' self-esteem (and provides more direct support) than relief. Wages should be determined through consideration of the value created for the business by the worker in question. If those successful individuals choose to pay more than the minimum required, that is their choice.
The government should cut spending in order to reduce the national debt.
Strongly Agree
The current level of Federal debt just surpassed $40 trillion. That is larger than the GDP. Large amounts of government spending were added during the Bank Bail-out of 2008, during the COVID emergency, and under the "Infrastructure Bill." Few of those line items have been scaled back, even though the emergencies have passed. I have seen markets react to worsening credit, and it is not pretty. We must protect the Republic's safe-haven status to have the benefits of having the reserve currency.
List your top 3-5 priorities to eliminate government waste.
We need to: 1) audit the rolls of those receiving retirement benefits, health insurance coverage, and disability payments; 2) deport undocumented immigrants who are receiving government support for housing, food, and health care; 3) identify programs providing duplicate services, and a) choose one to go forward and b) provide a means of transition for the recipients to their new provider; 4) audit the contracts and programs from the Pentagon to streamline production, purchasing, and delivery.
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
Individuals and businesses should be required to provide services even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.
Disagree
It is obvious at the extreme: the government should not force hospitals associated with religious orders to perform abortions.
What does "separation of church and state" mean to you?
The Establishment Clause of the Constitution prevents the federal government from creating a national religion. It was written at a time when some states in the union had church membership requirements for citizenship. In part, the Establishment Clause was put in place to keep the federal government from over-riding states' rights. It was not written to preclude anyone in government from reflecting on the tenets of their faith in drafting or voting on laws.
HEALTHCARE
What most closely matches your view on healthcare: A) Healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare option. (includes "universal healthcare," "medicare for all," etc.) B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options. C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary. D) Taxpayer funded health care should be abolished in all forms, and Medicaid and Medicare should be defunded.
None of the above. I think healthcare provided by the government should be available to those that need it or want it. People should be free to choose from other healthcare options that fit their needs if they can afford them. Focusing on insurance creates an intermediary layer of insurance administrators, which adds to the costs.
The government should keep a database of people with various ongoing medical illnesses to assess the economic burden of treatment.
Disagree
Personal medical histories should be anonymized before being shared with the government. The efficacy of treatment and the relative costs of various treatments for ailments should be tracked to allow for informed public health policies, without the need to identify individual patients. The more expenses government takes on, the more information bureaucrats need to justify or reject payments. That is why government should not be making decisions about particular individuals' treatment.
NATIONAL SECURITY
With regard to America's foreign policy, which view most closely resembles yours: A) The United States should intervene whenever freedom is threatened. B) The United States should selectively help countries trying to grow democracy and fight tyranny. C) The United States has become too involved in others' policies and should remain focused on issues regarding our own sovereignty unless in imminent danger. D) The United States should stay out of foreign conflicts completely.
I generally agree with option C, although I would support the US actions supporting democracy and fighting tyranny in our backyard with extremely limited military presence, as evidenced with the extraction of Maduro from Venezuela.
The Chinese Communist Party poses serious military, cyber security, intellectual property, and global economic threats to the United States.
Strongly Agree
In addition to the vectors of risks posed by the CCP listed, I would add their practice of unrestricted warfare whereby any Chinese citizen can be assigned duties by the party to undermine America's interests or advantages anywhere. That assignment could include running effective propaganda campaigns on social media to confuse or mislead the American people,
Is the United States' relationship with Israel important, and if so why?
The relationship between the US and Israel is important. Israel serves as a source of high technology for the US and is entrusted with some results from our signal and remote surveillance of the Middle East. In response, Israel provides information to the US about the situation on the ground in the region. Both countries have strong, independent people. Both countries have fallen victim to attacks by Islamic terrorists. However, our policies do not necessarily have to align on all matters.
Islamic terrorism is a threat to the United States' national security.
Strongly Agree
Islamic terrorists attacked America on 9/11/2001 and have continued attacking the US's interests for decades, so there is evidence of a malign interest. The regular chanting of "Death to America" by the members of the Iranian Islamic Consultative Assembly serves as a reminder of this threat. Those are obvious. I am also concerned about possible "sleeper" cells of undocumented Islamic terrorists who may have arrived during the Biden years
IMMIGRATION
Who should be allowed to immigrate to the U.S. and under what circumstances?
It seems that the immigration requirements in place during the early years of the 20th century may have been more beneficial than those we have now. Google Gemini tells me that the only people refused entry were criminals, had a communicable disease, or were likely to become a "public charge." My grandparents told a different story of having to build a foundation in their new country before feeling secure enough to have young members of the family sail to America.
I support the existence of sanctuary cities to protect undocumented persons.
Strongly Disagree
It is still illegal to enter the country without documentation. Government officials who nullify federal law should be held accountable.
EDUCATION
I support eliminating the U.S. Department of Education and giving control back to states and communities.
Agree
As initially envisioned, the Dep't. of Education could have been useful in sharing best practices. In practice, it became captured by the NEA and served for many years as a funding source for training that was primarily ideological. I would be happy to get rid of the Dep't of Education, if the funding for the destructive training went away with it.
Foreign governments should be prohibited from funding American education.
Neutral
I am not averse to foreign funding on its own, I am troubled by the binding requirements that seem to go along with that funding. Foreign governments that set up "studies centers" that create anti-American ideologues and train students to distrust or revile their homeland should be banned.
VALUES
Attempts to physically or socially transition a child to the opposite sex constitute child abuse.
Strongly Agree
Medical and psychological practices that generate life-long harm to a child should not be tolerated.
Marriage is a God-ordained, sacred and legal union of one man and one woman. No government has the authority to alter this definition.
Agree
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
I am always trying to be a better Christian.
ELECTIONS AND VOTING
People should be able to vote without photo identification.
Disagree
While photo ID may be the focus now, the proof of citizenship necessary to receive the ID should be the focus going forward.
EQUALITY
Biological males should not be allowed to participate in women's sports or occupy biological women's spaces whether it be bathrooms, locker rooms, sorority houses, women's shelters, or prison.
Strongly Agree
There have been too many cases of abuse of females by the males in women's spaces to continue along this path and to pretend that encouraging this is a good policy.
ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT
What do you believe is the most reliable energy source that will supply the growing demand for electricity?
At the present time, power plants fueled with coal or natural gas fit that description, but I expect that to shift more towards nuclear power as more plants come on-line will replace the coal and natural gas plants mentioned earlier.
ABOUT YOU
Have you ever been penalized for sexual misconduct in either civil or criminal court? If so, please explain.
No
Have you ever been convicted of a felony? If so, please explain.
No
When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?
Conservative
I believe in personal freedom, but that requires personal responsibility and respect for others' rights. I support merit in hiring decisions, equality before the law, and freedom of religion. I do not support government financial support of one religion over another. I support limiting religious groups from imposing laws that are counter to our Constitutional principles.
CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY
Government has a responsibility to protect children from sexual exploitation during online activities.
Agree
Government has a role in arresting those who try or succeed in exploiting children via on-line activities. Parents bear the responsibility of framing the limitations on children's use of the internet.
2ND AMENDMENT
What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?
People who have committed crimes with guns and those who conspire against the well-being of the citizens should have limited access to firearms.
