QUESTIONNAIRE
RIGHT TO LIFE
Human life deserves legal protection from conception until natural death.
Disagree
The rights of human beings are absolute. However, it is possible for people to have good faith disagreements upon at what point a developing embryo becomes a human being. I do not believe that it is the prerogative of the Federal Government to dictate that point.
The lives of human embryos created through artificial methods ought to be protected from purposeful destruction.
Disagree
Under what circumstances should an elective abortion be allowed?
I do not believe that I, or anyone else for that matter, am qualified to decide on an exact moment at which a fetus becomes a fully fledged human being with rights that need to be protected, but I suspect that it occurs some time around the end of the first trimester. As such, I would not place federal restrictions on anything prior to that.
Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should receive taxpayer funds from federal, state, or local governments (including Title X grants).
Agree
I believe that there are several issues that should not be handled by the federal government. I would push back against the use of federal funds to pay for providers like these, but what state and local authorities do is their own prerogative.
The Comstock Act, which bans interstate transportation of abortion-inducing drugs, should be enforced.
Neutral
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
Individuals and businesses should be required to provide services even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.
Strongly Disagree
The freedom of association as outlined in the First Amendment makes it perfectly clear that we can choose not to do business with someone for any purpose. However, it should be noted that people who choose not to do business with a specific demographic may find their business at risk of competition from those who will.
What does "separation of church and state" mean to you?
Just as religious institutions should be free from government meddling, so too should legal matters be decided without special consideration being given to religious concerns.
NATIONAL SECURITY
With regard to America's foreign policy, which view most closely resembles yours: A) The United States should intervene whenever freedom is threatened. B) The United States should selectively help countries trying to grow democracy and fight tyranny. C) The United States has become too involved in others' policies and should remain focused on issues regarding our own sovereignty unless in imminent danger. D) The United States should stay out of foreign conflicts completely.
C
The Chinese Communist Party poses serious military, cyber security, intellectual property, and global economic threats to the United States.
Disagree
The United States Navy alone is the most powerful military force on Earth. There is no credible conventional military threat to the United States. In terms of cyber security and intellectual property, however, the CCP has shown numerous times that they are willing to steal information from us. This requires a more robust encryption methods. In terms of economic threat, our own responses are far more damaging to our economic well-being than anything the CCP has done or could do.
Is the United States' relationship with Israel important, and if so why?
The United States has several allies around the world and should seek to maintain those alliances for both strategic and economic benefit. Israel is one of those allies, but I do not think it is more or less important than our other friends abroad.
Islamic terrorism is a threat to the United States' national security.
Disagree
Islamic terrorism, while responsible for several tragedies, is not a unique threat to the United States as a whole, any more than terrorists like the Unabomber or Weather Underground were. Terrorism is deplorable and should be condemned and, where possible, prevented, regardless of the ideology that motivates it.
HEALTHCARE
What most closely matches your view on healthcare: A) Healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare option. (includes "universal healthcare," "medicare for all," etc.) B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options. C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary. D) Taxpayer funded health care should be abolished in all forms, and Medicaid and Medicare should be defunded.
C
The government should keep a database of people with various ongoing medical illnesses to assess the economic burden of treatment.
Strongly Disagree
Such a database would be ripe for abuse. Privacy is already under attack by the federal government and I would not be willing to put such a tool into their hands.
ECONOMY
Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.
Strongly Agree
People who can afford to pay more taxes should do so in order to provide relief for working families.
Neutral
Taxes should be reduced across the board and specific taxes eliminated entirely where feasible.
The government should cut spending in order to reduce the national debt.
Strongly Agree
The national debt is the greatest threat to the security and prosperity of our country. Even now, the interest payments on the debt have exceeded our defense spending. There is no way to tax ourselves out of this situation. The only viable solution is to spend less.
List your top 3-5 priorities to eliminate government waste.
Social Security makes up 22% of total federal spending. I would reduce benefits for incoming recipients while grandfathering in current recipients, who would see no change under my plan. National defense accounts for 15%. While our security is important, it is worth noting that our military is the equal of the rest of the world combined. Health insurance coverage is another 14%. I would see providers allowed to sell across state lines, reform the employer coverage system, and repeal Obamacare.
IMMIGRATION
Who should be allowed to immigrate to the U.S. and under what circumstances?
My most recent immigrant ancestor was my great grandmother, who came here in 1929 through Ellis Island. At that time, we had a simple vetting system and quarantined some people for disease, but it was massively more efficient than our current immigration system. If we had operated under the current procedure then, she likely would have been denied entry. I want the people of today to have the same opportunity my family had. Any reforms that move us in that direction would be a win in my view.
I support the existence of sanctuary cities to protect undocumented persons.
Neutral
EDUCATION
I support eliminating the U.S. Department of Education and giving control back to states and communities.
Agree
Abolishing the Department of Education would be fantastic, but barring that, putting money into individual education accounts such that the money follows the child would be a great reform. This would be much more efficient, as the money could be directed by parents, rather than going to bloated bureaucracies and administrative systems. Depending on how well this is implemented, we may even be able to have better educational outcomes while reducing overall spending.
Foreign governments should be prohibited from funding American education.
Neutral
CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY
Government has a responsibility to protect children from sexual exploitation during online activities.
Neutral
The responsibility for managing a child's online activities lies with the parent. Failure to do so that results in such exploitation could be considered neglect or even abuse, but the government should never be the primary caretaker of our children.
2ND AMENDMENT
What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?
None. The Constitution is quite clear that the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. It is also worth noting that most mass shootings occur in places with the heaviest restrictions on firearms. Any laws restricting the ownership of guns will only be observed by law abiding citizens. Anyone whose intention is to commit murder will not be deterred by the weapon they use being illegal.
ABOUT YOU
Have you ever been penalized for sexual misconduct in either civil or criminal court? If so, please explain.
No
Have you ever been convicted of a felony? If so, please explain.
No
When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?
Choose not to answer
I reject the binary of conservatism and liberalism. I am a libertarian. I believe in reducing the interference of government in all matters. Generally speaking, this causes me to lean fiscally conservative and socially liberal, with a desire for non-interventionist foreign policy and support free trade. As a rule of thumb, you can describe my position any matter by saying that I do not believe government should be involved or that its involvement, if absolutely necessary, should be minimal.
VALUES
Attempts to physically or socially transition a child to the opposite sex constitute child abuse.
Neutral
I do not support the physical transitioning of minors, but social transitioning is entirely reversable and, if it is desired by both the parent and the child, is not harmful.
Marriage is a God-ordained, sacred and legal union of one man and one woman. No government has the authority to alter this definition.
Disagree
Government has no business defining marriage at all. If a church or other religious body chooses to recognize same sex marriage, they should be able to do so, just as any such body should have the freedom and authority to reject it.
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
I am a regular attending member of Elizabeth Lee Methodist Church. I believe that no one should be excluded from God's love and that it is our duty as His followers to act in accordance with the love and mercy of Christ. We must feed the hungry, shelter the needy, and care for those less fortunate than ourselves. We have the responsibility to do these things ourselves, not passing them off to external bodies, like government, and to do so of our own free will. I believe in the freedom of all people to make decisions for themselves, be it about their money, their bodies, their faith, their speech, or anything else. God gave us free will and it is immoral to take that away from anyone, so long as they are not harming others.
ELECTIONS AND VOTING
People should be able to vote without photo identification.
Neutral
EQUALITY
Biological males should not be allowed to participate in women's sports or occupy biological women's spaces whether it be bathrooms, locker rooms, sorority houses, women's shelters, or prison.
Neutral
I do not believe the federal government has any business deciding such matters and that it should be handled on the state or local level. Participation in sports, in particular, should be decided not by government, but by individual leagues.
ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT
What do you believe is the most reliable energy source that will supply the growing demand for electricity?
Most renewables are inefficient and unreliable, while fossil fuels are significant pollutants and grow more expensive over time. The most viable, cleanest, and reliable sources of energy are nuclear, geothermal, and hydroelectric, in that order.
