QUESTIONNAIRE
RIGHT TO LIFE
Human life deserves legal protection from conception until natural death.
Strongly Agree
What role should the school serve in helping a student with an unwanted or crisis pregnancy?
Beaufort County has an excellent Crisis Pregnancy Center. A student with an unwanted or crisis pregnancy should be referred there.
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
With regard to public schools, what does "separation of church and state" mean to you?
It means that while schools should not dictate a particular religion, they should not prohibit religious activity. I support opportunities for prayer at appropriate times in school activities.
ECONOMY
What is your position on government funding of public education from Pre-K through college?
State government should continue its responsibility for K-12 education funding with counties providing facilities and supplements to state funding. Competition in any field incentivizes excellence, so I support Opportunity Scholarships and Charter Schools. I support salary increases for teachers as proposed in the current NC House version of the state budget. I support funding state universities and community colleges, but with in-state tuition limited to students who are US citizens.
Student loan forgiveness unfairly shifts the financial burden to those not responsible for student debt.
Agree
Many student debtors struggle but make good on their obligations. It is unfair to them to let others off the hook.
IMMIGRATION
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) enhances the safety and security of communities by identifying and detaining illegal aliens.
Strongly Agree
We have immigration laws that provide a correct way to come to America. My wife is an example, coming to America from Europe the right way. Our Rule of Law is threatened by allowing just anyone who wants to cross the border stay in our country. Illegal aliens are a huge financial burden on our schools that has resulted from a failure by the previous administration to enforce our national immigration laws. Our school system should cooperate with ICE in every way possible.
EDUCATION
Abortion and gender-affirming providers, including Planned Parenthood, should be a resource for instruction or services in the school.
Strongly Disagree
The recent landmark US Supreme Court case of Mahmood v. Taylor has greatly reinforced parental rights to opt their children out of LGBTQ and transgender related instruction and activities. Its principles would almost certainly also cover abortion. It would be very inappropriate to allow Planned Parenthood or similar organizations into the schools.
Consequences for bad behavior create a safe and orderly environment, which is essential for student learning.
Strongly Agree
Discipline is a serious problem in schools. This impacts the safety of both students and staff, and also the learning environment for other students. I support a stronger hand for principals to deal with bad behavior. In appropriate cases, if the behavior is severe, students should be referred to the juvenile justice system. The word needs to get out to students prone to bad behavior that it will not be tolerated in the schools.
Educators should give students a thorough education in America's founding documents and cultivate American patriotism.
Strongly Agree
Beaufort County Schools have not had an approved Social Studies (history) curriculum for eight years, forcing teachers to put together their own curriculum. I have placed that issue on the School Board agenda so we can move forward to adopt a new curriculum. That curriculum should include our founding documents and founding fathers and be based on Eastern North Carolina values, not the "woke" agenda. NC statutes allow adoption of a curriculum outside those approved by DPI, if necessary.
I support eliminating the U.S. Department of Education and giving control back to states and communities.
Agree
I strongly support the concept as I am a firm believer in local control of local schools. However in NC, where funding would go at the state level may be a sticking point. If the legislature had control of it, that should be fine, but NC DPI is as liberal if not more liberal than the US Department of Education has been. Putting more funding under control of DPI would not be a positive move. A lot of the problem at DPI is the state school board being very liberal appointees of the governor.
If you support the teaching of Sex Ed, please answer the following question: Sexual education should include these topics (list all that apply and add your own, if needed) -- abortion methods and side effects; abstinence; consent; contraceptive methods; human anatomy/the reproductive system; physical and emotional health outcomes; sex acts and pleasures of sex; sexual orientation and gender identity; stages of pregnancy and fetal development
First of all, any sex education should only we offered with parental consent. Of the listed topics, I would NOT support "pleasures of sex and sex act" or , "sexual orientation and gender identity" The other topics I could support with parental consent. The recent US Supreme Court case of Mahmood v. Taylor would make teaching gender identity and sexual orientation particularly problematic.
Please list in order the following priorities in relation to the role of a K-12 public school (omitting any that do not apply): American History, Art & Music, Civics, Critical Race Theory, Foreign Language, Gender Identity, Information Technology, Language Arts, Mathematics, Personal Finances, Physical Fitness, Political Activism, Science, Sexuality, Social Emotional Learning, Vocational Learning
1. American History 2. Language Arts. 3. Mathematics, 4. Science, 5.Civics, 6. Information Technology, 7.Personal Finances, 8. Art and Music, 9. Foreign language, 10. Physcial Fitness, 11. Vocational Learning. The others have no place in the schools. Our school board has adopted policies prohibiting Gender Identity and Critical Race Theory in our curriculum using language I wrote to do so.
Public schools should prioritize academic achievement and building character necessary to preserve American traditions and self-government.
Strongly Agree
The schools are a key place where our culture and societal norms are transmitted to the next generation. Academic achievement builds the skills necessary for students to thrive in American society. Students should be encouraged to excel, not merely get by. Building character is fundamental to building a strong and resilient society in our country.
School choice creates competition, and that competition will push public schools to improve their educational systems.
Agree
Competition keeps everyone trying to improve their product, and education is no exception. Competition from charter, religious, and private schools pushes public education to up its game to be better than the competition.
2ND AMENDMENT
Faculty who are licensed to carry and have had ongoing training should be allowed to carry guns at school in order to respond to an active shooter situation.
Agree
Places that have adopted these policies have not had school shootings since doing so. School safety is a key issue, and we should take every step we can to assure it. We have make good strides in school safety in Beaufort County since we got our Sheriffs Office back in the schools as School Resource Officers.
ABOUT YOU
Have you ever been convicted of a felony? If so, please explain.
no
Have you ever been penalized for sexual misconduct in either civil or criminal court? If so, please explain.
no
I voted in these primaries and general elections:
2014 Republican Primary 2014 General Election 2016 Republican Primary 2016 General Election 2018 Republican Primary 2018 General Election 2020 Republican Primary 2020 General Election 2022 Republican Primary 2022 General Election
I have been a registered Republican since I moved to Beaufort County in 1978, and prior to that was a registered Republican in Mecklenburg County. I regularly vote in primaries, runoffs, and general elections. I have also held many positions in the Republican Party organization at the precinct, county, district, and state level.
When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to immigration and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?
Very Conservative
I am one of two current members of the Beaufort County School Board who are members of the North Carolina Conservative School Board Members Association. I am a former board member of both the North Carolina Conservative Society and the North Carolina Conservative Union (which was a state affiliate of the American Conservative Union). As a law student, I was a summer intern with the American Conservative Union in Washington, DC
VALUES
Biological males should be allowed to participate in women's sports or occupy biological women's spaces whether it be bathrooms, locker rooms, sorority houses, women's shelters, or prison.
Strongly Disagree
Title IX of the Civil Rights Act was passed to protect women and girls in education. Allowing biological males into women's spaces like those listed would be a total reversal of those protections and should not be tolerated. Because the male body is physically stronger than the female body, allowing biological men into women's or girls athletics is nothing short of cheating.
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
I am a Missouri Synod Lutheran, which is a traditional Bible believing denomination, which does not promote the so-called "social gospel"
Government should recognize and support the fundamental right and essential duty of parents to direct their child's health and educational well-being.
Strongly Agree
The Beaufort County School Board just had a vote on an issue related to this. I made a motion to remove language that says educational personnel should decide if books parents objected to should be removed from libraries. My motion to amend that language to say that the positions of educational personnel and parents should both be considered was defeated on a 4 to 5 vote. We have more work to do to support parents rights in Beaufort County.
I support the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., that people should be judged by the content of their character and not the color of their skin.
Strongly Agree
Our school board recently removed DEI from our Policies, a unanimous vote supporting my motion to do so. DEI is the exact opposite of Dr. King's teachings. I also support Dr. King's niece's observation that "the only race that matters is the human race."
Marriage is a God-ordained, sacred and legal union of one man and one woman. No government has the authority to alter this definition.
Strongly Agree
Mental health conditions such as anorexia and gender dysphoria need to be treated, not affirmed.
Strongly Agree
The British National Health Service protocols for their doctors tell them that gender confusion among children is usually temporary and that children usually grow out of it naturally. I support a similar position here in America. I support President Trump's efforts to end child sex reassignment surgery and related drugs.
School library books that have literary value, as determined by experts, should be exempt from obscenity laws.
Disagree
This is an area where parent opinion matters. It is community standards, not some "expert" that should be followed.
ELECTIONS AND VOTING
People should be able to vote without photo identification.
Strongly Disagree
Every industrialized country in the world except the US requires a photo ID to vote. In the US it is only some of the states that require this. North Carolina is one of those states. Photo ID's are essential to election integrity.
