QUESTIONNAIRE

RIGHT TO LIFE

Human life deserves legal protection from conception until natural death.

Strongly Agree

Absolutely. From conception, there is a unique human being with separate DNA, one who is equally endowed by their Creator with the same rights and as deserving of full protection of those rights of any other person. Those rights extend throughout their lifetime until their natural death.

What role should the school serve in helping a student with an unwanted or crisis pregnancy?

The school can provide to the student and her family lists of resources such as Pregnancy Care Centers and other private community options for support. The school should, of course, also work with the student for health accommodations as needed with classwork and attendance. The main role of the school, however, for all students, is education; it can provide connections to outside supportive options for the parents to examine as they work with their student to determine how best to help their student. Regrettably, sometimes the family is not available to help the student, in which case the list of community resources will be all the more important for the student.

ECONOMY

Student loan forgiveness unfairly shifts the financial burden to those not responsible for student debt.

Strongly Agree

Student loan forgiveness also disincentivizes personal investment in the education being sought, which in turns leads to a loss of personal value of it and therefore a lack of pursuit of excellence.

What is your position on government funding of public education from Pre-K through college?

Publicly funded education is the main system in place in our country. Communities benefit from students who are educated and well-rounded in their ability to analyze, critique, invent, communicate, and provide needed civic responsibility. Therefore, properly focused public education indeed deserves public funds. Funding in and of itself, however, is not sufficient to deliver that education, therefore we must remember it is only one of the several required elements of stellar education.

RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

With regard to public schools, what does "separation of church and state" mean to you?

Jefferson's phrase to the church has been wildly misapplied. That wall of separation was to protect the church from being tyrannized by the government. It was not at all meant to limit Christians' free expression of religion - nor influence - on any part of their culture, including their schools. Yes,there is inherent danger in allowing authority figures, e.g., teachers, to exert undue influence on those under their tutelage, but that is a separate issue from students carrying Bibles or praying.

IMMIGRATION

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) enhances the safety and security of communities by identifying and detaining illegal aliens.

Agree

Laws enacted by duly-elected representatives of the people, debated and discussed on their way to passage, are to be enforced. The executive branch has charge of enforcing the laws, which has been smoothly done under many decades of presidential administrations of both parties, including Presidents Clinton, Obama, and Biden. The only change is the narrative - a very harmful change to our students, inciting fear and anxiety rather than the security and peace normally ensured by the presence of LEO.

EDUCATION

Abortion and gender-affirming providers, including Planned Parenthood, should be a resource for instruction or services in the school.

Strongly Disagree

Planned Parenthood should absolutely not not be a resource for anything in public schools, as they have repeatedly proven that they are unable to restrain their bias toward their own profitable perspectives or to prevent it from infecting their materials and completely distorting truth.

Consequences for bad behavior create a safe and orderly environment, which is essential for student learning.

Strongly Agree

Absolutely strongly agree. Safety and security come from knowing where are the limits and the boundaries, from seeing those enforced, from knowing what is expected and accepted. Capricious or even no enforcement of guidelines foment uncertainty, confusion, and disorder, making it impossible to focus the mind adequately to learn new material, to extend understanding in new ways, or to invent new processes or concepts.

Educators should give students a thorough education in America's founding documents and cultivate American patriotism.

Strongly Agree

Yes, an understanding of the basis of our founding and our history is especially necessary to preserve one of the very few nations on earth where human rights and liberties are truly valued and protected.

I support eliminating the U.S. Department of Education and giving control back to states and communities.

Agree

I agree with more local control in principle but also readily acknowledge that the states need more adjustments to develop workable plans to administer the behemoth educational system, and even more work is needed before communities are prepared to handle it themselves. One of the best results of achieving that goal is the reduction of some of the unnecessary regulations - not all are unnecessary, but some - which will release and empower teachers to teach as they deem best for their students.

If you support the teaching of Sex Ed, please answer the following question: Sexual education should include these topics (list all that apply and add your own, if needed) -- abortion methods and side effects; abstinence; consent; contraceptive methods; human anatomy/the reproductive system; physical and emotional health outcomes; sex acts and pleasures of sex; sexual orientation and gender identity; stages of pregnancy and fetal development

My investigation and research on this topic is incomplete, but my initial thoughts are that a health class' unit on sexual education should include human growth and development during the course of pregnancy, human anatomy/the reproductive system, physical and financial impacts of premarital sexual activity - including sexually transmitted diseases - and possibly resources for parents wishing to have more personal discussions with their students.

Please list in order the following priorities in relation to the role of a K-12 public school (omitting any that do not apply): American History, Art & Music, Civics, Critical Race Theory, Foreign Language, Gender Identity, Information Technology, Language Arts, Mathematics, Personal Finances, Physical Fitness, Political Activism, Science, Sexuality, Social Emotional Learning, Vocational Learning

Tied for the top spot: History/Civics/American History, Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Art & Music, Physical Fitness, Then also tied and very near the top: Foreign Language, Information Technology, Personal Finances, Vocational Learning

Public schools should prioritize academic achievement and building character necessary to preserve American traditions and self-government.

Agree

Although I do agree that our nation can be preserved by only a virtuous people, I believe that building character is more likely a job for parents and families than public schools. Academic achievement is of course a top priority.

School choice creates competition, and that competition will push public schools to improve their educational systems.

Agree

I actually agree with this principle pretty strongly, but I am withholding some of the force of agreement because "school choice" is such a broad term which needs careful definition and careful explanation about how the funding would work. (Would all funds return to the parents, only county funds but not state funds, would the state education department dole it out? According to what standards?) I would like to see how that is defined and implemented before totally agreeing.

VALUES

Biological males should be allowed to participate in women's sports or occupy biological women's spaces whether it be bathrooms, locker rooms, sorority houses, women's shelters, or prison.

Strongly Disagree

I strongly disagree and worked for 14 months to get our Board to agree to put in writing that students are to be separated by their physiological birth sex (and not their psychological gender.) I have written pretty extensively about this on my website where I report about Board Activity; here is a link to two such articles: https://www.christinatonsing.com/defining-terms-legal/ and also https://www.christinatonsing.com/title-ix-boys-in-girls-bathrooms-not-yet/

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

I am an imperfect follower of Christ who needs grace and mercy and therefore accepts that others do as well. I believe we are all created by our God with a purpose, which gives our lives meaning and light. The Bible, the Word of God, gives strength and direction. If a label is helpful, I am an Evangelical Christian.

Government should recognize and support the fundamental right and essential duty of parents to direct their child's health and educational well-being.

Strongly Agree

Yes, government should protect the rights of parents to direct their child's upbringing - and also refrain from encroaching on that right.

I support the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., that people should be judged by the content of their character and not the color of their skin.

Strongly Agree

Yes, of course, that is true - and I would add the word "only": "...should be judged only by the content of their character and not the color of their skin."

Marriage is a God-ordained, sacred and legal union of one man and one woman. No government has the authority to alter this definition.

Strongly Agree

Mental health conditions such as anorexia and gender dysphoria need to be treated, not affirmed.

Strongly Agree

School library books that have literary value, as determined by experts, should be exempt from obscenity laws.

Strongly Disagree

ELECTIONS AND VOTING

People should be able to vote without photo identification.

Strongly Disagree

This most valuable right of the U.S. citizen should be exercised by only those verified as citizens.

2ND AMENDMENT

Faculty who are licensed to carry and have had ongoing training should be allowed to carry guns at school in order to respond to an active shooter situation.

Agree

I have heard and appreciate the arguments against that position above due to friendly fire, confusion in communications, etc., but I would also be interested in hearing the solutions for those obstacles.
