QUESTIONNAIRE

RIGHT TO LIFE

What role should the school serve in helping a student with an unwanted or crisis pregnancy?

The school should have the right to educate the student and their families on their options and available resources. The school should also provide accommodations that allow the student to continue their education and be successful in school, regardless of the difficulties of their situation.

Human life begins at conception and deserves legal protection at every stage until natural death.

Strongly Disagree

Human life begins and birth and providing legal protection for that life until death includes mothers and women.

RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

Teachers should be required to instruct students on mandated curriculum even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.

Agree

There needs to be more to this question. The mandated curriculum needs to be high-quality, diverse, and devoid of religious bias so that teachers never feel as though their moral or religious beliefs are being violated, BUT teachers should not be allowed to insert their own biases or beliefs into the classroom curriculum or deviate from a curriculum that is factual and welcoming.

ECONOMY

Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.

Disagree

Capitalism kills itself eventually, though does provide economic productivity in the short term. We can still have private property and free enterprises, but systemic changes must be made to avoid the downfalls of late-stage capitalism before it ruins us as a country.

What is your position on government funding of public education from Pre-K through college?

Absolutely. I think the government should provide 100% free schooling for all ages. An educated populace is the best way to create a future full of innovation, acceptance, prosperity, and environmental health.

EDUCATION

Abortion and gender transitioning providers, including Planned Parenthood, should be a resource for instruction or services in the school.

Neutral

I'm not sure "in" the school is necessary, but schools should not shy away from directing students to these organizations and services, if needed.

Consistent discipline creates a safe and orderly environment, which is essential for student learning.

Agree

If by "discipline" you mean "consequences." Safety is important and consistency is important, but so are conscious conversations with students about expectations, behavior, community, school culture, and natural consequences.

Educators should give students a thorough education in America's founding documents and cultivate American patriotism.

Agree

Yes AND they should ensure that students have context for the times and people by which those documents were written. Patriotism has become synonymous with so many racist cultural issues, but we could all love our country if we work towards a country that loves all.

I support Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI).

Strongly Agree

No details needed to clarify this. I support diversity, equity, and inclusion. Period.

I support eliminating the U.S. Department of Education and giving control back to states and communities.

Neutral

As a former educator, I'm weirdly neutral on this. The department was created to help ensure that every single state was meeting a minimum level of education in it's schools, so that the disparities between states were lessened. However, we still see huge differences across states and the current federal administration should not be trusted to be making decisions for schools, so eliminating the DOE under Trump might actually benefit us for now.

If a member of the public flags (challenges) a book as inappropriate and the school board disagrees, should the board impose a moratorium on when the book can be challenged again? If yes, for how long?

Yes, for the length of the school board members' terms. For Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, that's 4 years.

Please list in order the following priorities in relation to the role of a K-12 public school (omitting any that do not apply): American History, Art & Music, Civics, Critical Race Theory, Foreign Language, Gender Identity, Information Technology, Language Arts, Mathematics, Personal Finances, Physical Fitness, Political Activism, Science, Sexuality, Social Emotional Learning, Vocational Learning

My list would change for each age group, as is developmentally appropriate, but an approximation of that list is: Social Emotional Learning Science Language Arts Mathematics History (all, not just American) Critical Race Theory (by which I mean just teaching about other people and their histories, too) Art & Music Vocational Learning/Information Tech Personal Finance Gender Identity/Sexuality/Physical Fitness (I think these all fall under personal health) Civics/Political activism Foreign Langua

The state should fund education by allowing dollars to follow the child instead of the bureaucracy, through a program which allows parents the freedom to choose their child's school – public, private, or homeschool.

Disagree

Public schools should all be so well-funded and community-oriented that most people are very happy with them. If, for any reason, that is not the case, parents may choose to educate their children differently out of their own pockets.

Which should students have: equity of outcomes or equality of opportunities?

Equity of outcomes. While having the same opportunities sounds like it should encompass the types of things that create access for all students, that has not always been the case. The intent behind equality of opportunities is to create equity in outcomes, but it does not work out that way in practice and more needs to be done to close the gaps in opportunity and outcomes for many students.

Which type of written parental consent should be obtained before students are taught courses such as Comprehensive Sex Education (CSE)? (A) Opt-In. (B) Opt-Out. (C) None.

I guess B--Opt-Out. I think everyone should know Sex Ed, but parents can decide for their own kids.

Who should make decisions about whether or not a book is appropriate for children? A) the elected school board members; B) an outsourced community committee

The elected school board members. They were elected to represent the communities they serve. If the community has a problem with the choices the board makes on appropriate materials, then they need to become civically engaged and vote differently and campaign for candidates they believe represent their values and beliefs.

2ND AMENDMENT

The right to bear arms is fundamental and must be protected.

Strongly Disagree

Guns are falling into the hands of too many dangerous and unqualified individuals. We need stricter gun laws that make sense for the kinds of gun violence issues we're facing in this country.

OTHER IMPORTANT ISSUES

In the event of a pandemic, school districts can mandate whatever health precautions they deem necessary (including masks and vaccines) to protect students and staff.

Strongly Agree

Absolutely. The district should make health and safety the top priority of students and families.

ABOUT YOU

Have you ever been convicted of a felony? If so, please explain.

No.

Have you ever been penalized for sexual misconduct in either civil or criminal court? If so, please explain.

No.

When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?

Very Liberal

Feel free to check out where I fall on my ActiVote grid.

VALUES

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

I believe all things are connected and we owe it to each other, all living things, and the world in which we live to strive for kindness, empathy, and the good of all each day. I value honesty, compassion, and community.

Children have a right to reach maturity without chemical or surgical castration, which would damage their healthy bodies through surgeries and may cause a life-long dependence on cross-sex hormones.

Disagree

Children, like all humans, have the right to feel safe and comfortable in their own bodies, however that presents for them. Families should discuss openly with their children about the various ways to change their appearance and present as their preferred gender and decide as a family what age and stage is right for them to transition.

If sexual education is taught in schools, what is the appropriate age when it should be taught?

Formal sexual education should probably start around 11 or 12 years old, but teaching kids about healthy relationships, gender identities, correct anatomical terms, and personal hygiene should start at birth and be taught in developmentally appropriate ways for each stage of life.

Marriage is a God-ordained, sacred and legal union of one man and one woman essential to the formation and sustaining of a civil and prosperous society.

Strongly Disagree

Marriage is a commitment by individuals to love one another and strive to meet the expectations they personally set forth for their relationship for the rest of their lives together.

Parents have the fundamental right to raise their child in accordance with their beliefs and values, including the right to make decisions about the child's education and healthcare.

Agree

Yes, but public education does not have to bend to each individuals desires in this regard.

Parents should have full and timely access to any and all records, including school and medical records, associated with their minor children.

Agree

In most cases, I agree; however, children who feel safer at school or with the adults at school may share things with school personnel that they do not feel safe to share at home. In such cases, the school should not be required to immediately contact the parents with that information. Doing so violates the trust that student had in those adults and now creates a scenario where the child has no one they feel safe to share vulnerable information with.

School children have the right to be protected from sexual grooming including drag shows and explicit materials with pictures of sex acts and graphic language.

Choose not to answer

Who writes these questions?! Yes, children should be protected from sexual grooming and pornographic pictures, but drag is not grooming, nor pornographic.

Should schools be giving instruction on how to engage in sexual acts, the pleasures of sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity or should they instead focus on educating students about the science of reproduction?

Again, this is such a leading question because it lumps sexual orientation and gender identity in with how to engage in sex acts instead of the science of reproduction. Schools should have comprehensive sex ed that includes sexual orientations and gender identities.

ELECTIONS AND VOTING

People should be able to vote without photo identification.

Agree

In-person voter fraud is extremely rare and voter ID laws create unnecessary barriers for individuals to vote, especially minority or low-income voters.

EQUALITY

Biological males should not be allowed to participate in women's sports or occupy biological women's spaces whether it be bathrooms, locker rooms, sorority houses, women's shelters, or prison.

Strongly Disagree

Trans women should have every right to use the facilities of their gender identity. Same goes for trans men. And non-binary folks should use whatever facilities make them most comfortable. Any person, regardless of gender, caught committing heinous acts to another person should face severe consequences. I personally never understood gendered bathrooms if they all had separate stalls anyway.
