QUESTIONNAIRE

RIGHT TO LIFE

What role should the school serve in helping a student with an unwanted or crisis pregnancy?

Schools should be a safe and supportive place for every student, especially when they are facing an unwanted or crisis pregnancy. While schools are not a replacement for families or medical professionals, they are responsible for providing education for all students and making sure that every young person can stay on track academically. This includes: connecting students to resources, protecting privacy and dignity, and keeping students engaged in their education. The school’s role is to be a bridge: to listen, provide access to resources, and ensure no student feels isolated or left behind in their education.

Human life begins at conception and deserves legal protection at every stage until natural death.

Neutral

As a school board member, my role is not to legislate issues like when life begins. My responsibility is to ensure that every student who comes through our doors has access to high-quality education. I will focus on what the board can do: making sure schools provide accurate health education and protecting student privacy. My priority will always be to keep students engaged in their education and to support their well-being so they can succeed.

RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

Teachers should be required to instruct students on mandated curriculum even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.

Agree

Teachers are professionals, and part of their responsibility is to deliver the state-mandated curriculum so all students receive a consistent, high-quality education. At the same time, it is important that schools provide support and training so teachers feel equipped to teach sensitive content with accuracy and care. Students deserve access to factual, inclusive instruction that prepares them for the world, while teachers deserve clear guidance and respect as they fulfill their role.

ECONOMY

Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.

Choose not to answer

What is your position on government funding of public education from Pre-K through college?

I strongly support government funding of public education from Pre-K through college. Access to quality education should not depend on a family’s zip code or income. Investing in early learning, K-12, and affordable higher education prepares students for the workforce, strengthens communities, and drives long-term economic growth. Public dollars must be used transparently and equitably to ensure all students thrive.

EDUCATION

Abortion and gender transitioning providers, including Planned Parenthood, should be a resource for instruction or services in the school.

Agree

Schools must remain focused on their primary mission: educating and supporting students. Health instruction should follow state standards and be delivered by qualified educators, counselors, and school health professionals. When outside resources are considered, it’s critical that they are evidence-based, age-appropriate, and aligned with district policy. My priority will always be ensuring students have access to accurate information and trusted adults in schools.

Consistent discipline creates a safe and orderly environment, which is essential for student learning.

Agree

I agree that consistent discipline is essential for a safe and orderly environment where students can learn. Discipline policies must be clear, fairly applied, and equitable so that all students are treated with dignity. I will support strategies like restorative practices, social-emotional learning, and strong family-school partnerships to address behavior, reduce disparities, and keep students engaged in their education. A safe, respectful environment benefits both students and educators.

Educators should give students a thorough education in America's founding documents and cultivate American patriotism.

Neutral

Yes, I believe students should have a strong and thorough education in America’s founding documents, including the Constitution, Declaration of Independence, and Bill of Rights. A solid grounding in these texts helps students understand the principles of democracy, their rights, and their responsibilities as citizens. Beyond memorization, schools should encourage critical thinking and civic engagement so students can connect history to present-day challenges and opportunities.

I support Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI).

Strongly Agree

I support Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) because every student deserves to feel seen, valued, and supported. DEI is about ensuring fair access to opportunities, removing barriers that hold students back, and creating welcoming schools where all children can thrive. Strong DEI practices also strengthen teacher retention, family engagement, and community trust which ultimately improves outcomes for every student in CMS.

I support eliminating the U.S. Department of Education and giving control back to states and communities.

Strongly Disagree

I do not support eliminating the U.S. Department of Education. Federal guidance and funding play an important role in supporting students with disabilities, Title I schools, and programs that CMS families rely on. While local voices must remain strong in shaping education, we also benefit from national standards, protections, and resources that help ensure every child has access to a quality education.

If a member of the public flags (challenges) a book as inappropriate and the school board disagrees, should the board impose a moratorium on when the book can be challenged again? If yes, for how long?

I do not support book banning. Students deserve access to diverse, age-appropriate materials that help them think critically and see themselves reflected in what they read. If a book is reviewed and deemed appropriate, there should be a transparent process that respects both the professional judgment of educators and community input. To avoid repeated, politically motivated challenges, I would support setting a reasonable moratorium period before the same title can be challenged.

Please list in order the following priorities in relation to the role of a K-12 public school (omitting any that do not apply): American History, Art & Music, Civics, Critical Race Theory, Foreign Language, Gender Identity, Information Technology, Language Arts, Mathematics, Personal Finances, Physical Fitness, Political Activism, Science, Sexuality, Social Emotional Learning, Vocational Learning

NA

The state should fund education by allowing dollars to follow the child instead of the bureaucracy, through a program which allows parents the freedom to choose their child's school – public, private, or homeschool.

Strongly Disagree

I believe public dollars should strengthen our public schools, not divert them away. School choice already exists in North Carolina, but when state funding is pulled from public schools to private programs, it creates deeper inequities and strains resources for the majority of students who attend CMS.

Which should students have: equity of outcomes or equality of opportunities?

Students should have equality of opportunities — every child deserves access to strong teachers, safe schools, and quality resources regardless of zip code, race, or income. At the same time, we know that true opportunity requires removing barriers and providing support where it’s needed most. That’s what equity is about: making sure all students have what they need to succeed, even if it looks different from student to student.

Which type of written parental consent should be obtained before students are taught courses such as Comprehensive Sex Education (CSE)? (A) Opt-In. (B) Opt-Out. (C) None.

A

Who should make decisions about whether or not a book is appropriate for children? A) the elected school board members; B) an outsourced community committee
