QUESTIONNAIRE
RIGHT TO LIFE
Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?
The choice of adult woman in consultation with her doctors. We already trust adult men to make their own healthcare choices. It is not only commonsense to trust adult women with their healthcare choices, it is a human rights issue. When we trust women and their physicians, they tend to make the best choices for our society. When we try to force women, many of them are endangered by unsafe practices.
Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive funds from federal, state, or local governments (including Title X grants).
Strongly Disagree
Women die due to the denial of reproductive healthcare and this affects especially poor women.
I support 'aid in dying' laws which legalize assisted suicide and euthanasia.
Strongly Agree
Medical services should be legal and supervised by physicians with the agreement of patients and guardians.
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
Individuals and businesses should be required to provide services even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.
Disagree
Religion is a free choice protected by the First Amendment and people who feel offended by requests for services can conscientiously object but if possible, other colleagues and organizations that are not offended should be allowed to provide equitable lawful services to all.
Under what circumstances can government close churches?
Churches that incite violence or organize armed insurrection against the government or against sections of the public deserve to be closed for public safety.
NATIONAL SECURITY
What should the United States do to help eradicate the threat of Islamic terrorism?
Looking for friends and not for enemies among Muslims would likely reduce the threat of terror the same way that the Marshall Plan reduced the threat of terror from the fascist countries that waged war against the Allied Forces in World War II. Peacemaking trumps warmongering.
I support the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement to pressure Israel to withdraw from occupied territories, remove the separation barrier in the West Bank, allow full equality for Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel, and promote the rights of Palestinian refugees.
Strongly Agree
The single state solution based on the US principles outlined in The Federalist Papers is my preferred solution to the Middle East crisis. I blogged about this innovative solution in 2008: https://massliteracy.blogspot.com/2012/11/jerusalaam-jerushalom.html
HEALTHCARE
What most closely matches your view on healthcare: A) Healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare option. (includes "universal healthcare," "medicare for all," etc.) B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options. C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary. D) Taxpayer funded health care should be abolished in all forms, and Medicaid and Medicare should be defunded.
B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options.
Under what circumstances (if any) should a government, school, or employer be allowed to require vaccinations?
If vaccination is necessary for public safety, it should be required.
ECONOMY
What changes, if any, should be made to the tax code?
Progressive taxation benefits the public. Those who earn more than a million dollars a year should be able to pay a higher rate for additional income over that.
What government spending would you reduce in order to balance the budget?
Government spending on drug prohibition should be defunded and the funds reallocated to harm reduction. Drug dependency is a public health issue and not a criminal justice issue. Drug awareness education and rehabilitation work better.
Taxpayer-funded public education should be guaranteed through college.
Strongly Agree
College is not for everyone but those who are qualified and interested in higher education should be funded to gain the knowledge to serve the public more effectively. It is a win-win for all.
IMMIGRATION
The U.S. should do more to physically secure the southern border.
Disagree
The US is a country of immigrants who contribute to the success of the country in significant ways. 1/3 of US science Nobel Prize Winners are foreign born. The Statue of Liberty should continue welcoming those who are burdened and we should offer them a path to citizenship. More should be done to improve living conditions in countries of origin to reduce the push to emigrate.
Who should be allowed to immigrate to the U.S. and under what circumstances?
The US should continue the Diversity Visa Lottery to bring more people from countries under-represented in the US. I wrote about this as a better model for Germany and the EU countries: https://digitalscholarship.tsu.edu/ajcjs/vol2/iss1/1/ Also, the gifted aliens visa program should continue with the H1B that brought me to the US in 1999.
EDUCATION
I support school choice, including voucher programs, tax credits, charter schools, private schools, and home schools.
Agree
School choice will always be allowed for parents to decide where their wards are educated, provided that public education that serves 99% of our students is not denied funds in order to give vouchers to for profit schools that are selective.
CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY
Police officers should be personally immune from prosecution for conduct consistent with departmental policy (qualified immunity) while on duty.
Strongly Disagree
Police Departments are capable of making serious mistakes in their policies and if those policies result in harms against members of the public, they should be held accountable
I support redirecting funds from police departments to mental health and community programs.
Strongly Agree
The police officers will agree that they are not trained to respond top mental health crisis. They will likely welcome the shift of resources to those better able to respond to such crises.
2ND AMENDMENT
What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?
Military style assault rifles, drones, grenades, tanks and bazookas were never intended to be included in the 2nd Amendment
Victims of gun violence should be able to sue firearms dealers and manufacturers.
Strongly Agree
Just like cars, gun ownership should carry third party insurance policies to protect innocenbt victims from harm
ABOUT YOU
What do you think is the general purpose of government?
Honest Abe Lincoln said it best, government is of the people, by the people,, and for the people.. Government exists to serve the public interest. That is why the preamble to the Constitution says, We the People. Not we the billionaires, nor we the corporations, nor we the men. You cannot spell the US without us!
When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?
Very Liberal
Liberty was the foundational value of the Declaration of Independence and the Abolition of Slavery as symbolized by the Statue of Liberty. Anyone who is against more liberty for Americans is obviously anti-American. However, Liberty is not a License to hate, that is why we need a government for the equal protection of all with due process under the law

VALUES
Judeo-Christian values established a framework of morality which is necessary for our system of limited government.
Agree
Religious morality is important in every society but Judeo-Christian morality is not the only value system that informs good conduct in the US. American Indian reverence for nature, African American reverence for non-violence, Buddhist practices of meditation and contemplation, Islamic teachings about forgiveness and Rastafarian philosophy of One Love for all are all important moral values worthy of mutual respect. Keep religion and the state separate.
I support adding gender identity as a specially protected class in non-discrimination laws.
Strongly Agree
Homophobia did not exist in indigenous societies until colonizers introduced the hysteria. It is harmful to our fellow citizens to expose them to bullying just because of their gender identity. Parents tell me that they are worried about bullying in schools and it is shameful to see some elected officials also bullying children about their bathroom choices. Town festivals and home restroom do not check birth certificates before allowing people to use bathrooms. Add gender neutral bathrooms.
Marriage is a God-ordained, sacred and legal union of one man and one woman. No government has the authority to alter this definition.
Strongly Disagree
Marriage is between consenting adults and the government should recognize the equality of all lawful marriages. As the Supreme Court has rules, this is to protect the estates of same-sex couples against the seizure of their properties after one partner dies under the pretext that they were not married.
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
I am a lover of the teachings of Jesus Christ and I believe in religious tolerance and diversity. I grew up as an altar boy in the Catholic Church but I also observed my parents make sacrifices in their traditional African shrines. They explained to me that it is the same one God that we all worship in our different ways.
ELECTIONS AND VOTING
People should be able to vote without photo identification.
Strongly Agree
This is already allowed in cases of absentee ballots. We should be making it easier for people to vote, not harder especially because a huge proportion of the voters do not bother to vote.
What laws would you propose to change present voting practices?
Allow electronic voting from home and introduce voter lotteries to award one million dollars per state to a lucky voter during elections. That may encourage more voters to participate.
EQUALITY
I agree with Critical Race Theory (CRT) which asserts that the institutions in the United States are fundamentally racist.
Strongly Agree
Critical Race Theory is not only about racism, it also addresses sexism and classism. It states that there is race-class-gender inequality in our society and that we should do more to guarantee the equal protection of all under the law as promised by the 13th Amendment. Inequality and injustice harm the public interest whereas E Pluribus, Unum promises a more perfect union.
Is racism a threat to domestic security in the United States? Why or why not?
Southern Poverty Law Center monitors hate groups in the US and reports that they are increasing in number. The attack on Congress on January 7 2020 and the attack on Charlottesville that resulted in deaths of law enforcement officers allegedly featured hate groups. Virginia is for Lovers and not for Haters. Once upon a time, anti-Black racism drove the Confederates to wage war against the United States and cost the country 700,000 lives. Never again!
Reparations should be given to people on the basis of race.
Strongly Agree
Almost every group that suffered historic injustice has been offered reparations, except people of African descent. The US would be a moral example to the European allies who benefitted from the enslavement of Africans for hundreds of years by setting up a significant reparative justice package. California is considering such a policy and Virginia should study this option. It will be in public interest.
ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT
Which comes closest to your view? A) Stricter environmental laws and regulations cost too many jobs and hurt the economy. B) Stricter environmental laws and regulations are worth the cost.
B) Stricter environmental laws and regulations are worth the cost. Allowing funding for environmental scientific research and clean energy will definitely discover more affordable alternatives to environmental pollution that harms public health. A healthy environment will also attract or create more jobs.
I support the use of hydraulic fracking to extract oil and natural gas resources.
Disagree
Fracking is not an efficient source of energy and the huge costs have discourgaged drilling companies as oil prices fall. We should support more clean energy because this is increasingly the future.
