QUESTIONNAIRE
RIGHT TO LIFE
Human life deserves legal protection from conception until natural death.
Neutral
Whether or not to have an abortion is a medical decision that should be in the hands of the woman alone, without any state, federal or municipal restrictions on the safe availability of the procedure. The fight for widely accessible medical care, child care, and other social steps to reinforce the care and feeding of the future generations is key. Abortion should be something needed only when all other things fail. And I stand for decriminalization of abortions; women should not be victimized.
Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive taxpayer funds from federal, state, or local governments (including Title X grants).
Neutral
More women find themselves forced to consider abortion when faced with an unplanned pregnancy. The decline in availability of affordable health care exacerbates the challenges workers face. Fewer than half of women in rural areas can find prenatal care within 30 miles. In 2021, more than 1,200 women died while pregnant or shortly after giving birth, the highest number since 1965. Medical care should be a human right from cradle to grave.
ECONOMY
I support using taxpayer funds to lobby the state legislature and/or U.S. Congress.
Disagree
We know that the Democrat or Republican party government is not going to do anything to change the conditions for working people. It's an illusion because the state and federal governments defend the capitalist ruling class and the bosses who exploit the labor of working people. The mass social movement that built the industrial unions in the 1930s, and then of the civil rights battles of the 1950s and 1960s is the example workers need to emulate.
It is the responsibility of city government to provide subsidized housing at taxpayer expense.
Disagree
Older adults are the fastest-growing segment of the homeless population. We are for a massive federally funded program to build affordable and comfortable housing for all who needed it. Low-income housing, so desperately needed by millions of workers, is not being built by the billionaire developers because it doesn’t generate sufficient profits for them. The National Low Income Housing Coalition estimates there is a 7.3 million shortfall of such apartments nationwide.
Property taxes should be abolished.
Agree
The social reality of regressive taxation under capitalism. All sorts of levies are a very real burden on workers. The Socialist Workers Party opposes all taxation of working people including property taxes. Workers are weighed down by regressive payroll taxes, sales taxes, gasoline taxes, cigarette and liquor taxes, homeowners' taxes, as well as fees for driver's licenses, schools, marriages, birth and death certificates, and many other things. Workers paid no income tax until 1943.
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
Government should not discriminate against individuals, organizations, or business owners who affirm marriage as between one man and one woman.
Agree
All people should be guaranteed rights against any discrimination by government.
Religious liberty is at risk in the United States and deserves the highest level of protection in the law.
Agree
I support the 1st Amendment on freedom of worship. My party's unconditional defense of the constitutional freedom of worship is indivisible from its defense of freedom of speech and assembly.
IMMIGRATION
City officials should have the right to proclaim their city a sanctuary city for illegal aliens.
Disagree
Declaring sanctuary cities is not a step towards defending immigrant workers and unifying the working class. What is needed is the labor movement to organize a fight for amnesty for immigrants who live and work here. The divisions between undocumented workers and those born in the U.S. is used by the bosses to drive down the wages and working conditions. "Open borders" is not the answer, but solidarity with workers in other countries who are fighting to change their conditions.
VALUES
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
The morals of this society are based on the dog eat dog mentality of the capitalist drive for gigantic profits and domination of the world. The world today is marked by deepening capitalist crises, trade wars which lead to shooting wars and the threat of WWIII and nuclear devastation. The Socialist Workers Party believes if the working class takes power we could build a society based on human solidarity among workers here and internationally. The Socialist Workers Party is the nucleus of the kind of revolutionary party necessary to lead future revolutionary struggles that can take power and transform all of society.
Children have the right to be protected from sexually explicit materials in publicly funded libraries, including school libraries.
Choose not to answer
The way the question is worded it could mean censorship of books and materials. Parents have the right to be involved in the education of their children including what kind of materials are used in the schools.
ELECTIONS AND VOTING
People should be able to vote without photo identification.
Disagree
People should vote in person whenever possible and photo identification should be made available for any one who needs it. I support the right of ex-prisoners being able to vote. All restrictions on voting rights should be ended.
All filings by candidates for municipal office, including ballot application and campaign finance reports, should be available for public online access on the city website within 24 hours of filing deadline.
Neutral
Ballot measures which include bond issues should fully disclose both the potential tax rate increase and actual monetary increase for the average single family residence.
Disagree
Bond issues are another way to tax working people.
EQUALITY
Biological males should not be allowed to participate in women's sports or occupy biological women's spaces whether it be bathrooms, locker rooms, sorority houses, women's shelters, or prison.
Agree
I agree with science that there are two sexes male and female.
Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) instruction should be required for all city employees.
Disagree
DEI programs have been a source of perks and class advancement for the middle-class layers who run them, and deepen racial and class divisions. They are the opposite of the affirmative action programs set up in the 1970s that opened the door to the hiring of Black and women workers into jobs they’d been excluded from, gains that grew out of the Black-led movement that overthrew Jim Crow segregation.
ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT
Taxpayers should subsidize green initiatives such as electric vehicle charging stations.
Disagree
The green new energy, including electric vehicles and their charging stations are based on making profits not finding real solutions to environmental pollution. Independent working-class political action and the conquest of power by workers and farmers is the effective defense of labor and the earth’s land, waters and atmosphere.
ABOUT YOU
Have you ever been penalized for sexual misconduct in either civil or criminal court? If so, please explain.
No
Have you ever been convicted of a felony? If so, please explain.
No. But I don't think that previous incarceration should be used against anyone getting a job or having all of the rights of full citizenship including voting or running for office.
What do you think is the general purpose of government?
Capitalism is a class divided society between the wealthy ruling class and the working class. Local, state and federal governments today defend the interests of the wealthy. Only the conquest of state power by the working class and the expropriation of finance capital can lay the foundations of a world not based on exploitation, dog eat dog competition, wars, violence, racial discrimination and Jew-hatred but solidarity among working people.
Candidates and officeholders should be required to disclose all business investments and real estate, whether in the city or in an area currently proposed for annexation.
Neutral
Please list your business investments and/or real estate, whether within the city or in an area currently proposed for annexation.
None. I am a factory worker.
When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to immigration and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?
Choose not to answer
I have been a member of the Socialist Workers Party for many years, a party made of workers and based in the working class since its founding in 1938. We have run candidates in elections for 75 years on a principled position of working class independence from all capitalist parties. For more information you can access information from TheMilitant.com or PathfinderPress.com.
I voted in these primaries and general elections:
2014 General Election 2016 General Election 2018 General Election 2020 General Election 2022 General Election
I have voted in these elections for Socialist Workers Party candidates.
CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY
I support redirecting funds from police departments to community programs.
Choose not to answer
The simple fact is that under capitalism, the role of the cops isn’t to fight crime. It’s to protect the private property and political rule of the capitalist bosses and bankers. The U.S. state is the largest repressive apparatus in world history, with the highest — and increasing — incarceration rate of any country on earth. These institutions of class rule, of bourgeois “law and order,” brutally serve and protect the property, profits, and assumed prerogatives of the U.S. capitalist class.
2ND AMENDMENT
What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?
I support the second amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
OTHER IMPORTANT ISSUES
I support the legalization of recreational marijuana.
Disagree
I am for the decriminalization but not in favor of legalization.
LOCAL
I support annual financial audits of every city department by an independent, third party auditor.
Choose not to answer
Please list up to three issues or projects that you think need the most attention.
1. Defending Israel's right to exist which includes the defeat of Hamas and fighting all manifestations of Jew-hatred and anti-semitism. 2. Supporting the sovereignty of Ukraine. Working people need their own foreign policy based on solidarity and not economic exploitation of other countries. 3. Fighting for amnesty for undocumented workers.
