QUESTIONNAIRE
RIGHT TO LIFE
Human life deserves legal protection from conception until natural death.
Agree
What role should the school serve in helping a student with an unwanted or crisis pregnancy?
In an ideal world, I do believe it is morally justified for schools to provide students with resources to help handle a student's crisis pregnancy and prepare them for becoming a parent. However, this can quickly become a slippery slope if the school begins to push an agenda or intervene with the student's personal beliefs. In fact, the balance between providing resources aimed at successfully preparing to deliver a child and pushing an agenda on a vulnerable new parent is more blurred now than it ever has been. Thus, in practicality, I am fully supportive of the rights of individual parents and continue to advocate for less public involvement in personal and family matters, such as a pregnancy.
ECONOMY
It is the government’s responsibility to ensure everyone has a livable income.
Strongly Disagree
Nowhere in the United States Constitution does it state that a role of the government is to provide everyone with a livable income. Thus, I strongly dissent to this statement. Moreover, the United States is a capitalist society that emphasizes the importance of individual freedoms over the collective state. It is the responsibility of the individual to provide for themselves, not the taxpayer-funded government.
What is your position on government funding of public education from Pre-K through college?
Proper education provides the best opportunity for our children to succeed and is a pillar of success in any civilized Western society. Thus, I do believe that the government can have a role in helping finance K-12 education. However, students should not be bound by the confines of their district and should have the ability to attend higher-performing schools if they so choose. They could also choose vocational school or military service.
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
The Ten Commandments should not be displayed in public school buildings or court houses.
Neutral
The first amendment of the U.S. Constitution provides for the freedom of religious expression but also ensures the separation of church and state. However, the Ten Commandments is not only a religious document but also served as one of the guiding of principles of the founding of our country. And, thus, each municipality and its constituents should have the latitude to decided whether or not they choose to have it displayed in their respective public spaces.
At school, students should be able to speak freely and civilly about matters of conscience and faith, including Christianity.
Strongly Agree
The first amendment of the United States Constitution explicitly grants this right to all citizens of the United States of America. I will strictly uphold any values explicitly stated in the Constitution, especially those detailed in the Bill of Rights, our most fundamental freedoms.
Teachers should be required to instruct students on mandated curriculum even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.
Neutral
The role of an educator is to teach the curriculum they have been instructed to teach, without adding personal biases. However, we must hold individual districts accountable for their mandated curriculum. Should curriculum stray from basic reading, writing, mathematics, and science courses, districts must be able to defend their addition as positive for all students and beliefs. Schools were designed to educate, not indoctrinate. However, we must not lose sight of an individuals moral compass.
NATIONAL SECURITY
Is the United States' relationship with Israel important, and if so why?
The United States' relationship with Israel is extremely important, as Israel is our only ally in the most volatile region of the world. However, this subject is not germane to the role of the Board of Trustees at Michigan State University.
The best way to maintain peace is through a strong military.
Strongly Agree
The United States' mantra from day one always been has been peace through strength. In today's perpetually volatile world, it is critical that we return to this philosophy to maintain our position as leader of the free world.
EDUCATION
I support eliminating the U.S. Department of Education and giving control back to states and communities.
Strongly Agree
The Department of Education is yet another example of federal government overreach that has gone awry. Any power not specifically delegated to the federal government should be that of the states, as is explicitly communicated in the Constitution. This includes education.
The state should fund education by allowing dollars to follow the child instead of the bureaucracy, through a program which allows parents the freedom to choose their child's school – public, private, or homeschool.
Strongly Agree
Giving individuals the power to make their own decisions, in any capacity, will always operate more efficiently and produce better results than providing that same power to a centralized bureaucracy. This is especially true with schooling, as parents will always want the best for their children. Binding students to the confines of their district is not only inefficient, it's also morally wrong. School choice is the best way to ensure a successful education for every child.
Which type of written parental consent should be obtained before students are taught courses such as Comprehensive Sex Education (CSE)? (A) Opt-In. (B) Opt-Out. (C) None.
Opt-in offers more control to the parents and should be the default for any such course.
Abortion and gender-affirming providers, including Planned Parenthood, should be a resource for instruction or services in the school.
Strongly Disagree
Abortion and gender-affirming providers never have a place in K-12 schools. Any such conversation belongs exclusively to students and their families, not third parties. Any attempt to subvert this idea is a direct attack on parental rights. Furthermore, no taxpayer dollars should ever be distributed to such organizations at any level of education, including college.
Please list in order the following priorities in relation to the role of a K-12 public school (omitting any that do not apply): American History, Art & Music, Civics, Critical Race Theory, Foreign Language, Gender Identity, Information Technology, Language Arts, Mathematics, Personal Finances, Physical Fitness, Political Activism, Science, Sexuality, Social Emotional Learning, Vocational Learning
This subject is not germane to the role of the Board of Trustees at Michigan State University as our student enrollment is post-secondary education.
VALUES
Children have the right to be protected from sexual grooming including drag shows, explicit materials in schools and libraries, and other public venues.
Strongly Agree
A child's mind is not developed enough to understand the complexity of the world in which we currently live. Children are our most impressionable—and thus, most vulnerable—members of society. It is our collective duty to protect the most vulnerable, especially children.
Marriage between one man and one woman and the families they form are the foundation of civilization and are fundamental to the well-being and prosperity of society.
Neutral
Traditional marriage and resulting families are absolutely the foundation of civilization and are critical to the prosperity of our society. Humans are by nature emotional beings, and strong family foundation is the first building block of success. That said, I do believe that individuals should have the ability to be with whomever they choose.
No healthcare diagnosis or treatment, whether mental, reproductive, or otherwise, should be given to a child without first receiving written consent from the parent.
Strongly Agree
Once again, a child's mind is not developed enough to make any significant decision, especially related to healthcare. Any disagreement to the above statement is a choice to ignore this proven scientific fact and a direct attack on parental rights. However, this subject is not germane to the role of the Board of Trustees at Michigan State University as our student enrollment is over 18 years of age.
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
I am a proud Christian. However, this subject is not germane to the role of the Board of Trustees at Michigan State University.
ELECTIONS AND VOTING
People should be able to vote without photo identification.
Strongly Disagree
The Constitution explicitly states, in multiple sections, that only United States citizens are guaranteed the right to vote. Proper photo identification is the best way to ensure the integrity of our elections and should be required at every polling station throughout the country.
EQUALITY
I support Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI).
Disagree
I do not inherently disagree with the utopian idea behind DEI. However, the implementation of such values has starkly contrasted with the intent, and reversed the very goals DEI set out to achieve. While its premise was to be accepting of all individuals, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, etc., the implementers of DEI have done the opposite - favoring particular groups over others and overcompensating for mistakes from generations ago.
Biological males should not be allowed to participate in women's sports or occupy biological women's spaces whether it be bathrooms, locker rooms, sorority houses, women's shelters, or prison.
Strongly Agree
Males and females are biologically different, period. Allowing biological males to compete in women's sports would effectively end the female sporting category, as biological women would be placed at a massive disadvantage. In other women's spaces, these differences present a serious safety concern for females, who are biologically more vulnerable to physical harm.
ABOUT YOU
I voted in these primaries and general elections:
Choose not to answer
I am an active voter and, to the best of my recollection, have voted in all listed General Elections and Republican Primaries. However, I cannot say for 100% certain that I did not miss one of the above and thus, do not want to accidentally misrepresent my record.
Have you ever been convicted of a felony? If so, please explain.
No.
Have you ever been penalized for sexual misconduct in either civil or criminal court? If so, please explain.
No.
When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?
Conservative
I am a proud conservative. However, this subject is not germane to the role of the Board of Trustees at Michigan State University.
2ND AMENDMENT
Faculty who are licensed to carry and have had ongoing training should be allowed to carry guns at school in order to respond to an active shooter situation.
Agree
The best way to mitigate the risk and limit the damage of active shooter situations is to have trained professionals prepared to intervene. I do not believe that ANY faculty member should be allowed to carry a firearm into school. However, licensed faculty who have completed relevant and building-specific training would be a great resource to combat a growing gun violence epidemic.
OTHER IMPORTANT ISSUES
Under what circumstances (if any) should schools be allowed to require vaccinations?
There are no circumstances in which public schools should be allowed to require vaccinations or force parents to make any other healthcare-related decision. Under our current system of education, private schools may exercise this ability, as families have the optionality to attend elsewhere. However, public schools which enroll students that have no other option are never afforded this ability.
