ECONOMY
What is your position on the minimum wage?
I support a minimum wage as well as tying it to an inflation index.
Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.
Agree
List your top 3-5 priorities to eliminate government waste.
Replace insurance company management of state Medicaid with a state-run panel of experts. Consolidate the school district administrations in charge of federal government reporting to take advantage of economies of scale and reduce administrative overhead on local school districts. Stop subsidizing companies like Walmart by either requiring them to pay employees enough to qualify for Medicaid and SNAP, or charging them an extra amount of tax equal to the subsidy we provide.
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
What does "separation of church and state" mean to you?
We may look to the Holy Bible for moral guidance, but not government policy.
Individuals and businesses should be required to provide services even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.
Disagree
Businesses may refuse service to anyone for any reason. However, such businesses should not expect immunity from public outrage, and they do not deserve the right to use their moral beliefs to claim unfair treatment should they themselves be discriminated against when bidding on contracts. Furthermore, if a business wants to bid on government contracts, it cannot have discriminated against customers either currently or in the recent past.
HEALTHCARE
What most closely matches your view on healthcare: A) Healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare option. (includes "universal healthcare," "medicare for all," etc.) B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options. C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary. D) Taxpayer funded health care should be abolished in all forms, and Medicaid and Medicare should be defunded.
Actually, none of these options captures my view accurately. I see healthcare as evolving from a competitive system (similar to option B) to a "Medicare for All" implementation, similar to option A.
The government should keep a database of people with various ongoing medical illnesses to assess the economic burden of treatment.
Strongly Disagree
Medical information is private. The government can track aggregate medical trends without violating individuals' right to privacy.
NATIONAL SECURITY
The Chinese Communist Party poses serious military, cyber security, intellectual property, and global economic threats to the United States.
Agree
Is the United States' relationship with Israel important, and if so why?
Yes, because Israel occupies a strategic geographic position in the Middle East. That said, I believe our support of Israel comes with conditions, one of which is to have a veto over all its military operations. We cannot simply give advanced weapons to Israel - or any other country - without having a say in how these weapons are used.
IMMIGRATION
I support the existence of sanctuary cities to protect undocumented persons.
Disagree
Congress and the courts should resolve disputes between the Federal government and local governments. I realize this is an ideal statement, but if our Constitution is to have any meaning, we should follow it consistently. That said, I do not support overwhelming a local government with Federal forces as a retaliatory move. Most infractions of the law are nuanced, and responses to so-called "Sanctuary Cities" should be equally nuanced.
EDUCATION
I support eliminating the U.S. Department of Education and giving control back to states and communities.
Disagree
The Department of Education helps ensure a consistent and adequate education nationwide. It can also help fund post-highschool education such as college, trade schools, and union apprenticeship programs.
Foreign governments should be prohibited from funding American education.
Neutral
VALUES
Government should recognize and support the fundamental right and essential duty of parents to direct their child's health and educational well-being.
Agree
Yes, but within certain parameters. Some children are abused in horrific ways. The government should be prepared to step in when abuse is suspected and should have the power to remove a child from an abusive situation.
Attempts to physically or socially transition a child to the opposite sex constitute child abuse.
Agree
I wouldn't call it child abuse unless such treatment is clearly outside psychological bounds, but I would certainly support preventing any permanent medical transitions until the child has reached the age of consent, probably 18 or older.
Marriage is a God-ordained, sacred and legal union of one man and one woman. No government has the authority to alter this definition.
Disagree
Whose definition of God and whose religion should we use? I'm okay with a religious interpretation of marriage, but insofar as the government is concerned, marriage is a secular contract between two people. Call it a "union" if you want, but a legal contract is outside the purview of any religion.
I support the expansion of gambling in my state.
Disagree
I recognize that sports gambling was voted on by the people of Missouri, and it passed. I will honor it, even though I disagree with it.
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
I am spiritual but not religious. I believe in God, and I honor His gifts of life and self-determination.
ELECTIONS AND VOTING
People should be able to vote without photo identification.
Disagree
At one point in our history, when everyone knew everyone else in a local area, a signature was sufficient. This is no longer the case. I would support a system where local voting authorities can access a voter's photo, so the voter need not present a photo ID but can consent to having their ID verified by a digital photo on record at the polling place. The bottom line is that we must make it simple and free to provide photographic confirmation of a person's identity when voting.
EQUALITY
Reparations should be given to people on the basis of race.
Disagree
What kind of reparations are we talking about? I don't support direct monetary reparations. On the contrary, I am willing to commit to a system of equal opportunity for everyone, regardless of race.
Biological males should not be allowed to participate in women's sports or occupy biological women's spaces whether it be bathrooms, locker rooms, sorority houses, women's shelters, or prison.
Agree
It is unfortunate that there are individuals who feel they were given the wrong gender. While I sympathize with their challenges, the greater good is not served by violating other people's right to privacy and to compete fairly. Gender-neutral bathrooms should be provided for individuals who relate to the opposite gender of their birth.
ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT
Man-made climate change is a global threat and requires urgent political action.
Neutral
Whether or not the macro changes in our climate are man-made, the threat indeed exists. I agree that we must take urgent political action; however, we need to respond measuredly and not lose our minds over it.
What do you believe is the most reliable energy source that will supply the growing demand for electricity?
Several potential solutions exist, and we should pursue each one to its full potential. The solution will combine energy sources and not rely on a single one.
ABOUT YOU
When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?
Moderate
I lean conservative on fiscal issues and progressive on social issues.
Have you ever been penalized for sexual misconduct in either civil or criminal court? If so, please explain.
No
Have you ever been convicted of a felony? If so, please explain.
No
CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY
What should be the goal of the criminal justice system?
To make our society safe by administering justice in a careful and accurate way.
Government has a responsibility to protect children from sexual exploitation during online activities.
Agree
Sharia law should not be accepted or incorporated in any form within the legal framework of the United States.
Agree
I see extremism within any religious context as equally threatening to our way of life. For example, some folks advocate for the Doctrine of Lesser Magistrates and Constitutional Sheriffs. These concepts open the door to extremist laws that are every bit as threatening - and perhaps more so - than Sharia Law. We should never tolerate it. Ever.
2ND AMENDMENT
What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?
I defer to current gun owners on this one. A vast majority of them - including those whom I've personally interviewed - point to "common sense" regulations such as locking guns when not in use and keeping firearms out of reach of children.
