QUESTIONNAIRE

RIGHT TO LIFE

Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive taxpayer funds from federal, state, or local governments (including Title X grants).

Disagree

I disagree with defunding organizations like Planned Parenthood, as they provide essential reproductive healthcare. The Hyde Amendment already bans federal funds for abortions, except in cases of rape, incest, or life endangerment. Title X funding supports non-abortion services such as contraception and cancer screenings. Cutting funds would harm low-income communities and worsen healthcare inequities. Access to comprehensive healthcare should be based on medical needs, not political ideology.

Chemical abortion drugs should meet essential safety standards (such as in-person consultation with a medical doctor) and require reporting to gather evidence on reactions and outcomes.

Disagree

I disagree with excessive restrictions on chemical abortion drugs like mifepristone. Decades of FDA regulation have proven these medications to be safe and effective. While initial requirements, like in-person consultations and strict protocols, were cautious, evidence shows they create unnecessary barriers to access. Telehealth and mail-order dispensing, shown to be safe during the pandemic, increase accessibility. Expanding access ensures reproductive autonomy without compromising safety.

Under what circumstances should an elective abortion be allowed?

Elective abortions should be allowed whenever an individual chooses not to continue a pregnancy. Whether it's personal choice, financial or emotional readiness, family planning, or concerns about an unstable or abusive relationship, the decision to have an abortion is deeply personal. Restricting access disregards the complexities of each situation. All abortions, regardless of the reason, are healthcare and should not be subjected to arbitrary distinctions or external judgment.

Does the federal government have a role to play in limiting abortion, and if so what federal steps and/or federal legislation would you support?

The federal government has a role in protecting abortion access, especially regarding privacy rights and limiting government overreach. The Fourth Amendment protects citizens from unreasonable searches, and states that heavily regulate abortion risk violating this by requiring invasive procedures, surveillance, or collecting personal data. Post-Dobbs, where Roe v. Wade was overturned, federal protections of privacy are vital as states impose restrictive laws. I support legislation like a revised Women’s Health Protection Act to enshrine the right to access abortion services nationwide and prevent states from infringing on privacy or imposing undue restrictions. Federal efforts should focus on stopping states from conducting invasive investigations into those seeking or providing abortions, ensuring a balance between individual rights and safe, legal access to healthcare.
