QUESTIONNAIRE

RIGHT TO LIFE

Human life begins at conception and deserves legal protection at every stage until natural death.

Neutral

This is a decision that should be made and opined upon by state and federal legislators. Local school boards do not have the authority to make legislation about this issue. Local school boards do, however, have an obligation to have medical professionals in schools to assist students with any medical need, including providing guidance and resources for pregnancies.

What role should the school serve in helping a student with an unwanted or crisis pregnancy?

School medical staff should be accessible to students in the event of any medical event. Many students do not have access to professional medicine outside of schools, so it is important that our schools maintain a roster of nurses and mental health professionals. These professionals should be able to provide guidance for students and assist them with finding resources that the student requests.

ECONOMY

Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.

Neutral

As a school board candidate, it is important that we ensure that our students are getting educated about various economic systems throughout our country and around the world. It is not the place of a school system to tell a student that one system is particularly better than another, but rather, students should be given the tools they need to make informed decisions for themselves.

What is your position on government funding of public education from Pre-K through college?

I believe that, if a society is going to place a high value on educated citizens, that it should pay for that education. Whether or not someone passes a class or chooses to pursue an educational opportunity is on them, but everyone deserves an equitable chance to learn.

RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

Teachers should be required to instruct students on mandated curriculum even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.

Strongly Agree

If a teacher wishes to teach a curriculum that is in line with their personal beliefs, whether those beliefs are political, religious, or other, then that teacher should seek employment with a private school that shares those beliefs. Government funded educational institutions should have a set standard and all teachers should be required to meet that standard, in order to provide the most consistent education across the board.

EDUCATION

Abortion and gender-affirming providers, including Planned Parenthood, should be a resource for instruction or services in the school.

Neutral

School healthcare professionals should have a variety of resources available for referring students to outside providers. If a student requests to be directed to a particular type of care, the school provider should be able to give the student that information and, possibly, facilitate an initial conversation or setting up of an appointment for that student. Outside care should only be referred after a request from a student, and should never be pushed on a student.

Consistent discipline creates a safe and orderly environment, which is essential for student learning.

Strongly Agree

Bullying and disrespect of teachers is a huge problem in schools across the country. School administration has an obligation to support their staff when making disciplinary decisions. Students who see that there our little or no consequences for poor behavior will continue to repeat that behavior.

Do you believe print and digital material available or presented to students should be easily accessible for public review, including those without children enrolled in school?

Yes

Everyone should have access to the materials used in school, but the decision about what materials are in school should be made based strictly on a standard of age-appropriateness. Just because someone believes that content in a book or other publication goes against their personal, political, or religious beliefs does not mean that the book is not age-appropriate for children.

Educators should give students a thorough education in America's founding documents and cultivate American patriotism.

Neutral

An accurate education on the history of our country is important, as is an accurate education on the history of our world. Students should receive education in the founding of our country from an academic, neutral perspective. Patriotism is a personal value that should not be taught by government-funded institutions. Our educational institutions should be focused on teaching facts, not opinions or beliefs.

I support Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI).

Strongly Agree

Our country has a track record of intentionally not including qualified individuals simply because of their race, ethnicity, orientation, or gender identity. While I do not support organizations that favor people simply because of those traits and don't look at their actual qualifications, I believe that it is important that every group of people is represented.

I support eliminating the U.S. Department of Education and giving control back to states and communities.

Disagree

With every level of government control over any organization, there exists an additional possibility for corruption, abusive power, and misuse of funds and resources. It is important to have some system of checks and balances so that public educational institutions across the country meet a minimum standard, so that students are not disadvantaged simply because of where they went to school.

Please list in order the following priorities in relation to the role of a K-12 public school (omitting any that do not apply): American History, Art & Music, Civics, Critical Race Theory, Foreign Language, Gender Identity, Information Technology, Language Arts, Mathematics, Personal Finances, Physical Fitness, Political Activism, Science, Sexuality, Social Emotional Learning, Vocational Learning

Art & Music, Language Arts (including foreign language), Mathematics (including personal finances), Science (which includes human sexuality and gender identity), Information Technology, Social Emotional Learning, Civics & American History (includes the history of political activism and discusses critical race theory), Vocational Learning, Physical Fitness

The state should fund education by allowing dollars to follow the child instead of the bureaucracy, through a program which allows parents the freedom to choose their child's school – public, private, or homeschool.

Disagree

Unless the same standards of accountability are present in private and homeschool programs, public money should stay in the public sphere.

Which should students have: equity of outcomes or equality of opportunities?

Students should have equality of opportunity. Every student should be set up to succeed, but it is ultimately their choice what they do with that opportunity.

Which type of written parental consent should be obtained before students are taught courses such as Comprehensive Sex Education (CSE)? (A) Opt-In. (B) Opt-Out. (C) None.

C. Lack of proper education in human sexuality leads to higher rates of teenage pregnancy and STIs.

VALUES

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

I do not hold any spiritual or religious beliefs.

Who is responsible for teaching sexual education to children, and what is the appropriate age when it should be taught?

Children should be taught about human sexuality at the point in time they are able to comprehend the subject matter, just as is the case with every other educational subject. Students should not be taught things that are too advanced for their mental state, nor should they have education withheld from them when they reach a point of understanding.

If you support the teaching of Sex Ed, please answer the following question: Sexual education should include these topics (list all that apply and add your own, if needed) -- abortion methods and side effects; abstinence; consent; contraceptive methods; human anatomy/the reproductive system; physical and emotional health outcomes; sex acts and pleasures of sex; sexual orientation and gender identity; stages of pregnancy and fetal development

Every one of the topics in this question should be discussed. These topics are directly related to real life situations that students will encounter, and it is important that students receive guidance on safety and risk associated with anything related to sexuality. The subjects should be presented from a neutral, academic perspective and personal opinion should be left out.

Children have a right to reach maturity without chemical or surgical castration, which would damage their healthy bodies through surgeries and may cause a life-long dependence on cross-sex hormones.

Choose not to answer

I have an associate's degree in criminal justice. I am not a scientist or medical professional and, as such, I'm not qualified to offer an opinion on this issue.

Children have the right to be protected from sexual grooming (including drag shows and explicit materials) in schools and libraries.

Neutral

Children have the right to be protected from sexual grooming, but drag shows do not fall into that category, and most materials that many consider "sexually explicit" are actually materials that contain nothing depicting any sort of sex act.

Marriage is a God-ordained, sacred and legal union of one man and one woman essential to the formation and sustaining of a civil and prosperous society.

Neutral

School board members do not have the authority to decide who is or is not granted a marriage license. One's personal beliefs dictate their views on marriage and, if someone asks someone to enter into a marriage that goes against their personal beliefs, they are free to decline that proposal.

Parents have the fundamental right to raise their child in accordance with their beliefs and values, including the right to make decisions about the child's education and healthcare.

Neutral

Parents have the right to raise their children how they want, but the education system must function to meet a minimum standard of teaching facts and preparing students to become functioning adults in society. Teaching beliefs and values is a subjective, personal issue that should be kept in the home.

Parents should have full and timely access to any and all records, including school and medical records, associated with their minor children.

Neutral

Many students live in abusive households and the only way for them to seek medical treatment is through school medical professionals. If a student lives in an abusive household and requires medical treatment outside of the home, notifying the parent that such treatment was sought could place the safety of that child in danger.

ELECTIONS AND VOTING

People should be able to vote without photo identification.

Strongly Disagree

As someone running for elected office, it is important to me that everyone who votes for or against me is doing so legally. I believe that photo IDs should be available at low or no cost to every citizen of every jurisdiction, and that those IDs should be presented to vote.

EQUALITY

Biological males should not be allowed to participate in women's sports or occupy biological women's spaces whether it be bathrooms, locker rooms, sorority houses, women's shelters, or prison.

Choose not to answer

I have an associate's degree in criminal justice. I am not a medical professional and, as such, and not qualified to offer an opinion on this issue.

When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?

Lean Liberal

2ND AMENDMENT

Faculty who are licensed to carry and have had ongoing training should be allowed to carry guns at school in order to respond to an active shooter situation.

Strongly Disagree

As a former correctional officer, I understand the importance of having trained professionals with firearms to prevent threats from getting into institutions. Faculty and staff inside those facilities, however, develop a relationship with students that should not be altered by the potential for having to shoot one of those students. I would like to see our Guardian program expanded so that there are multiple Guardians at every school to deter external threats from entering our schools.

OTHER IMPORTANT ISSUES

In the event of a pandemic, school districts can mandate whatever health precautions they deem necessary (including masks and vaccines) to protect students and staff.

Neutral

I have an associate's degree in criminal justice. I'm not a medical professional and, as such, am not qualified to offer opinions on this issue.
