QUESTIONNAIRE
RIGHT TO LIFE
Under what circumstances should an elective abortion be allowed?
I trust women to make the best decision for their family.
Chemical abortion drugs should meet essential safety standards (such as in-person consultation with a medical doctor) and require reporting to gather evidence on reactions and outcomes.
Agree
Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive taxpayer funds from federal, state, or local governments (including Title X grants).
Strongly Disagree
Planned Parenthood provides reproductive healthcare to many women and families and thereby prevents many abortions (e.g. providing birth control) and many health problems (e.g. provides preventive screenings for cervical cancer). For some women tax funded health care centers are the only place they can go to get birth control or annual exams. I support taxpayer funds for low income women to get reproductive health care.
I support 'aid in dying' laws which legalize assisted suicide and euthanasia.
Agree
Patients (in consultation with their doctors) should be allowed to choose how to spend their final days. I support laws that legalize assisted suicide that carry the standard restrictions other states already have (e.g. only in case of terminal illness and in the final days of life).
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
Under what circumstances can government close churches?
The government should not make choices about when churches are open or closed in general. However, in the case of emergencies, in order to keep the population safe, governments can require closure of organizations such as schools and churches. For example, after disasters schools are often closed.
Individuals and businesses should be required to provide services even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.
Disagree
However, if the individual works for a company or government agency that serves everyone, then individuals may be required to serve everyone who comes to the business. For example, public schools serve all children and hospitals serve all people.
NATIONAL SECURITY
The Chinese Communist Party poses serious military, cyber security, intellectual property, and global economic threats to the United States.
Agree
Is the United States' relationship with Israel important, and if so why?
Yes, Israel is an ally and we should support them as we support all allies. However, should Israeli government commit crimes (as defined by international law), they should be held accountable.
HEALTHCARE
What most closely matches your view on healthcare: A) Healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare option. (includes "universal healthcare," "medicare for all," etc.) B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options. C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary. D) Taxpayer funded health care should be abolished in all forms, and Medicaid and Medicare should be defunded.
A or B
Under what circumstances (if any) should a government, school, or employer be allowed to require vaccinations?
Under circumstances where the health the entire public is at stake. For example, schools require the measles vaccine to protect all children because the entire medical community agrees that the measles vaccine is safe and helpful.
ECONOMY
Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.
Strongly Agree
What is your position on the minimum wage?
I would like to raise the minimum wage to at least $15/hour in SC.
Should environmental and social issues, like ESG (environmental, social, and governance) ratings, be used as criteria in deciding where to invest public monies?
Yes
Many investors would like information about social and environmental issues to guide their investing and I favor companies to sharing this information their investors seek. Although organizations like asyousow.org do provide information on companies about their ESG rating, I suggest that companies also share it to increase investments and to help investors.
IMMIGRATION
The U.S. should do more to physically secure the southern border.
Neutral
EDUCATION
The state should fund education by allowing dollars to follow the child through programs which protect parents' freedom to choose their child's school – public, private, or homeschool.
Strongly Disagree
Taxes should fully fund public schools and public school teachers. Using taxes to fund private education is a violation of the SC constitution. See the SC Supreme Court Decision in Sept 2024 for details.
CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY
I support redirecting funds from police departments to community programs.
Neutral
Community programs that prevent crime are proven to be effective use of taxpayer dollars. However, I prefer not to take any existing funding from police departments. Rather I would like to keep police funding at the current level and add tax payer supported community programs that help prevent crime.
2ND AMENDMENT
What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?
I support background checks on all gun purchases regardless of where they are purchased. I support laws that require guns to be locked when not in use, especially in homes with children. I support laws that prevent people under age 21 from owning guns.
Should teachers be allowed to carry guns at school?
No
Research has shown that more guns in schools make schools less safe. I support providing teachers with adequate salaries, sufficient funds to buy classroom supplies, and funds for school buildings and playgrounds. Allowing some teachers to carry guns in schools would likely lead to many teachers to decide not to settle in SC. Since we already have a shortage of teachers in our state, I don't want anything to prevent teachers from coming to SC.
ABOUT YOU
Have you ever been penalized for sexual misconduct in either civil or criminal court? If so, please explain.
no
Have you ever been convicted of a felony? If so, please explain.
no
What do you think is the general purpose of government?
To protect and support its citizens.
When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?
Moderate
VALUES
Children are the most vulnerable members of society and must be protected from abuse, including gender ideology, grooming, and bodily mutilation.
Neutral
Of course children should be protected from abuse, grooming, and bodily mutilation. Teaching about gender has been part of education for decades. Teachers should continue to teach current science related to gender. It is unclear to me what "gender ideology" means, but teaching about gender is not abuse.
Parents should have the right to make decisions for their minor children.
Strongly Agree
Taxpayer funds should be used to provide gender transition services.
Agree
Marriage is a God-ordained, sacred and legal union of one man and one woman. No government has the authority to alter this definition.
Strongly Disagree
God doesn't limit who we should love and neither should governments. The United States government sanctions marriage between two people, regardless of gender. States cannot overrule federal laws.
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
I am a Christian and believe that God created each of us wonderfully made. I believe God loves every person and being and has required me to not judge others.. Since God loved me first, I believe I should love everyone regardless of their beliefs and values. I work toward acting like Jesus did when he lived on earth, accepting even the unaccepted, feeding the hungry, and teaching about love and forgiveness. Of course, I'm a work in progress as are all humans, always striving to be kinder, more loving and more forgiving.
ELECTIONS AND VOTING
People should be able to vote without photo identification.
Neutral
A valid voter registration card should be required.
States should join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact which makes the Electoral College irrelevant.
Strongly Agree
The Electoral College system makes a few states important for presidential elections instead of all states being important locations where everyone's vote for President matters.
EQUALITY
Is racism a threat to domestic security in the United States? Why or why not?
Racism is a part of America and affects every aspect of society so yes, it affects domestic security as well. Many mass shooters have been affected by racist ideology regarding supremacy of the white race. As a country we need to do better at teaching everyone to love each other and that aggression (and murder) is wrong.
I agree with Critical Race Theory (CRT) which asserts that the institutions in the United States are fundamentally racist.
Neutral
Critical Race Theory is a theory taught in law schools and other advanced programs that helps graduate students understand how racism might be affecting institutions and society. The theory does not determine which institutions are racist, instead it helps people to think critically. I think critical thinking is an important skill that children and adults of all levels should learn.
Biological males should not be allowed to participate in women's sports or occupy biological women's spaces whether it be bathrooms, locker rooms, sorority houses, women's shelters, or prison.
Disagree
Transgender women are women and should be allowed to do what women do. Transgender men should be allowed to do what men do. This question appears to be talking about women and not men. I support equal treatment under the law of both men and women.
ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT
Which comes closest to your view? (Select all that apply) A) Stricter environmental laws and regulations cost too many jobs and hurt the economy. B) Stricter environmental laws and regulations are worth the cost. C) Stricter environmental laws undermine U.S. energy independence and deter development of reliable electricity sources. D) Climate change is real and requires urgent policy action.
D
What do you believe is the most reliable energy source that will supply the growing demand for electricity?
There is not a single most reliable energy source. The most reliable energy source depends on the location. For example, in the Upstate near Lake Jocassee and Keowee, nuclear is the most reliable energy source.
