RIGHT TO LIFE
Under what circumstances should an elective abortion be allowed?
Definitely when the mother's life is endangered. I would allow for rape and incest as well.
Chemical abortion drugs should meet essential safety standards (such as in-person consultation with a medical doctor) and require reporting to gather evidence on reactions and outcomes.
Strongly Agree
We should require accurate records to contribute to the drug safety profile and an ongoing assessment of risks and side effects. In-person doctor consultation would not be required if the procedure was proven very reliable and safe for the woman.
Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive taxpayer funds from federal, state, or local governments (including Title X grants).
Strongly Agree
There is a segment of the population which believes that abortion is murder, and we are violating their consciences by forcing taxpayers to pay for abortions.
I support 'aid in dying' laws which legalize assisted suicide and euthanasia.
Disagree
I sympathize with the desire to ease the passing of a loved one, but these laws inevitably lead to applying pressure on persons to kill themselves. I support living wills and DNR, for which people can provide parameters under which life-saving treatment may be withheld. But I believe our efforts for the terminally ill are better spent in improving palliative care.
ECONOMY
Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.
Strongly Agree
The ability to accumulate wealth for one's self and one's family provides much of the incentive for productivity in our country.
What is your position on the minimum wage?
Those most harmed by minimum wage laws are inexperienced, unskilled workers. They are unable to produce sufficient value to justify such a wage. For everyone else, a reasonable MW rate makes little difference except that employers try to automate.
Should environmental and social issues, like ESG (environmental, social, and governance) ratings, be used as criteria in deciding where to invest public monies?
No
Public money should only be invested to maximize the fiscal return for the taxpayer. ESG are largely used to divert away from sound fiscal policy toward more political goals. If the environmental, social, and governance goals are important, they should be addressed by legislation, not by corrupting state fiscal objectives.
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
Under what circumstances can government close churches?
Only if it is being used as a front for some illegal activity or promoting terrorism.
Individuals and businesses should be required to provide services even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.
Strongly Disagree
I am against anyone being forced to violate their conscience. This has nothing to do with who is being served. In other words, you can't look at who walks through the door and refuse to serve them based on their appearance. But if the service that they request violates your conscience, then you should be allowed to decline.
HEALTHCARE
What most closely matches your view on healthcare: A) Healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare option. (includes "universal healthcare," "medicare for all," etc.) B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options. C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary. D) Taxpayer funded health care should be abolished in all forms, and Medicaid and Medicare should be defunded.
My position is somewhere between (B) and (C). I want to keep Medicaid and Medicare and take some steps to keep them financially viable. I am not opposed to some kind of catastrophic health care program available to everyone below a set income level. This would simply prevent bankruptcy from a sudden massive pileup of medical bills. Those with employer plans should always be incentivized to get their health insurance from their employer.
Under what circumstances (if any) should a government, school, or employer be allowed to require vaccinations?
When a disease causes severe side effects or death and a high transmission rate, then a vaccine should be required only after it has been proven effective. The smallpox and polio vaccines are two that I would have supported mandating.
NATIONAL SECURITY
The Chinese Communist Party poses serious military, cyber security, intellectual property, and global economic threats to the United States.
Agree
I believe this to be true, but I but I do not have strong confidence in that belief. I don't think that US citizens are exposed to accurate information about Chinese strengths and weaknesses.
Is the United States' relationship with Israel important, and if so why?
Yes, Israel is the only country in the Middle East that shares our values concerning human rights. In so far as we are engaged in a war on terror, Israel (as well as Saudi Arabia and Jordan) is a strategic ally in our struggle against Iran.
IMMIGRATION
The U.S. should do more to physically secure the southern border.
Strongly Agree
It is not possible for our country to absorb millions of new immigrants whose first action is to violate our immigration laws. It will take us many years to process those that we have let in.
EDUCATION
The state should fund education by allowing dollars to follow the child through programs which protect parents' freedom to choose their child's school – public, private, or homeschool.
Strongly Agree
I favor a voucher program.
VALUES
Children are the most vulnerable members of society and must be protected from abuse, including gender ideology, grooming, and bodily mutilation.
Strongly Agree
One of the primary objectives of government is to protect those who are vulnerable. Adults can do whatever they want to themselves, but children should be allowed to mature physically, mentally, and emotionally before allowing them to foolishly ruin their lives.
Parents should have the right to make decisions for their minor children.
Strongly Agree
Of course there are some very bad, possibly evil parents, and the government has a role to play in ensuring that children are not abused by their parents. Beyond these rare abuse cases, parents must be assumed to love their children and make the best decisions for their welfare. Government agents must not be allowed to override parents' decisions as if they care more about them.
Taxpayer funds should be used to provide gender transition services.
Strongly Disagree
Gender transition services are an illusory solution to emotional and mental problems. People can subject themselves to these services of their own will, but government should have no part in it. There is a segment of our population that views gender transition as immoral, and they should not be forced to participate in this act by funding it with their taxes.
Marriage is a God-ordained, sacred and legal union of one man and one woman. No government has the authority to alter this definition.
Agree
I agree with this definition of marriage. However, government can (and has) redefined marriage for its own purposes.
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
I am an evangelical Christian, with traditional family values. I am pro-life, pro-family, pro-traditional marriage, and I believe that God is the answer to most of the personal problems that people are facing. Trying to address spiritual problems with government intervention leads to worse problems.
ELECTIONS AND VOTING
People should be able to vote without photo identification.
Disagree
Photo ID is the best and easiest way to ensure that a voter is a valid voter. Unfortunately, that is no longer sufficient in Minnesota, since immigrants (who can't vote) can be erroneously registered to vote and granted driver's licenses with photos.
States should join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact which makes the Electoral College irrelevant.
Strongly Disagree
The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact effectively outsources our vote to the largest few states, against whom our state's vote results are inconsequential. Minnesota would never again see a presidential candidate visit us or care what we want.
EQUALITY
Is racism a threat to domestic security in the United States? Why or why not?
Racism might be a security threat in some small pockets of our country. I tend to believe that we are more at risk from over-reaction to perceived racism than from racism itself. It wasn't racists who burned down Minneapolis and took over Seattle, but those who violently protested acts that they perceived as racist. The cure is worse than the disease.
I agree with Critical Race Theory (CRT) which asserts that the institutions in the United States are fundamentally racist.
Strongly Disagree
The institutions of the United States are not perfect, but they are not inherently racist.
Biological males should not be allowed to participate in women's sports or occupy biological women's spaces whether it be bathrooms, locker rooms, sorority houses, women's shelters, or prison.
Strongly Agree
Women should never be forced into a vulnerable position with a biological male.
ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT
Which comes closest to your view? (Select all that apply) A) Stricter environmental laws and regulations cost too many jobs and hurt the economy. B) Stricter environmental laws and regulations are worth the cost. C) Stricter environmental laws undermine U.S. energy independence and deter development of reliable electricity sources. D) Climate change is real and requires urgent policy action.
C. Environmental laws were valuable at one time when there were noticeable pollution problems, and they should still be enforced. Current focus is to reduce carbon dioxide, which is a necessary gas for thriving plant life. Assertions that global climate change is caused by human activity are not persuasive, and we should not be disrupting our economy in a fruitless attempt to reduce carbon dioxide levels, which everyone admits will make little to no difference in our temperature.
What do you believe is the most reliable energy source that will supply the growing demand for electricity?
Nuclear power is the cheapest, safest, and most reliable energy source. The U.S. also has sufficient quantities of oil and coal to last for hundreds of years.
ABOUT YOU
Have you ever been penalized for sexual misconduct in either civil or criminal court? If so, please explain.
No
Have you ever been convicted of a felony? If so, please explain.
No
What do you think is the general purpose of government?
Provide services for the general public that are impractical on an individual level, such as utilities, defense, and a court system.
When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?
Conservative
I am a true believer in conservative principles, but I am not combative. I believe in tactical compromise to achieve bipartisan legislation, because that is what best exemplifies the will of the people.
CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY
I support redirecting funds from police departments to community programs.
Disagree
I think that there is a place for community programs, and police departments should partner with organizations experienced with handling homelessness, drug addiction, and mental illness. The mistake in this statement is that we can reduce the police force because of these community organizations. They will still need the police backing them up when their clients get violent or threaten people.
2ND AMENDMENT
What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?
I think that those restrictions are already in place. No fully automatic guns. Felons are banned from carrying guns.
Should teachers be allowed to carry guns at school?
Yes
This rule should be set at the school district level. There are many school districts where this would be a bad idea, but not all. It would be preferable not to allow open carry in a school except for police officers.
