QUESTIONNAIRE
RIGHT TO LIFE
Under what circumstances should an elective abortion be allowed?
The three most commonly agreed are rape, incest, or if the life of the mother is in danger. As an elected representative my job would be to represent the will of the voters.
Chemical abortion drugs should meet essential safety standards (such as in-person consultation with a medical doctor) and require reporting to gather evidence on reactions and outcomes.
Strongly Agree
With any medical procedure we should rigorously be aware of the risks and benefits.
Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive taxpayer funds from federal, state, or local governments (including Title X grants).
Strongly Agree
I think any time you provide funding for something, you'll create more of it.
I support 'aid in dying' laws which legalize assisted suicide and euthanasia.
Agree
Only in the rarest of circumstances. What we've seen recently in Canada with the MAID program has been a horrific assault on decency. I think a lot of times people might feel like there is "no way out" and I would be very concerned that treatable and addressable mental health concerns could results in death sentences with assisted suicides and I think that's a real concern. Mental health challenges are widespread and suicide shouldn't be encouraged as a solution.
ECONOMY
Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.
Strongly Agree
As a career entrepreneur, I couldn't agree more.
What is your position on the minimum wage?
I think raising minimum wage disproportionally makes it difficult for small business and workers with limited abilities to participate in our economy. I wouldn't support abolishing it, but I wouldn't support raising it either (absent more info).
Should environmental and social issues, like ESG (environmental, social, and governance) ratings, be used as criteria in deciding where to invest public monies?
No
I never want to knock someone for caring about the environment, but ESG is more of an ideology than science. I'm an engineer and I think we could do a lot more to understand the impact we as humans are having on the environment, but we don't have clear science on it. Public monies should NOT be used to manipulate markets and industries.
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
Under what circumstances can government close churches?
My knee-jerk reaction is never, but practically speaking if the building is unsafe for humans such as a building condemnation, perhaps. Outside of a genuine and immediate safety issue (church is on fire, roof is ready to collapse, etc) the government should remain out of the business of churches.
Individuals and businesses should be required to provide services even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.
Strongly Disagree
As with most things this could be taken to an extreme, but part of what has helped the United States grow into such a strong country is our ability to live our lives by our own morals and religious values. Again, sometimes folks take this to an extreme, but for example, no priest should be forced to marry a couple their faith believes shouldn't be married and no business should be forced to provide a service they are uncomfortable providing if it violates their established moral code.
HEALTHCARE
What most closely matches your view on healthcare: A) Healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare option. (includes "universal healthcare," "medicare for all," etc.) B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options. C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary. D) Taxpayer funded health care should be abolished in all forms, and Medicaid and Medicare should be defunded.
It isn't perfect, but C most closely matches it. I think we need to seriously address the way healthcare is actually provided vs funded. I worked in the Medicare Advantage industry for years. Medicare is earned through paying taxes and Medicaid helps provide a safety net that is needed. Unfortunately, through things like the ACA the method of financing the healthcare (health insurance) has been getting attention, but not actual healthcare. NV needs to expand reciprocal licensing.
Under what circumstances (if any) should a government, school, or employer be allowed to require vaccinations?
After Covid, I really want to say never. I think that's an oversimplification, but we absolutely cannot require people to take an injection if we have not been able to thoroughly test and vet the injection.
NATIONAL SECURITY
The Chinese Communist Party poses serious military, cyber security, intellectual property, and global economic threats to the United States.
Agree
I think our corruption at home is a bigger pressing risk, but the CCP has such strong tentacles with international business and trade (including cyber), that it isn't a surprise that we have Chinese nationals taking advantage of the open border to infiltrate massive numbers of illegal immigrants. Again, we have domestic problems that I think are causing us very real problems now and that in order to effectively address our foreign policy, we need to secure our domestic interests.
Is the United States' relationship with Israel important, and if so why?
Oddly enough, this is probably the most controversial issue in this survey. The AIPAC puts enormous amounts of money into pressuring the federal government to prioritize the interests of Israel ahead of the U.S. I can't accurately or effectively get too far into this here based on the character limitations, but it is absolutely an important relationship. The U.S. can't bankrupt itself funding foreign wars; Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and all the military contracts love war too much.
IMMIGRATION
The U.S. should do more to physically secure the southern border.
Strongly Agree
I do strongly agree, but we also largely have a policy problem. The Biden administration is subverting efforts to close the border and as I understand it, largely the politics and corruption allowing it as opposed to a need for more physical security. I'd still be in favor of more physical security, but we need to take a holistic approach and address all of the major (and ideally minor) contributing factors.
EDUCATION
The state should fund education by allowing dollars to follow the child through programs which protect parents' freedom to choose their child's school – public, private, or homeschool.
Strongly Agree
VALUES
Children are the most vulnerable members of society and must be protected from abuse, including gender ideology, grooming, and bodily mutilation.
Strongly Agree
Parents should have the right to make decisions for their minor children.
Strongly Agree
If parents are responsible for children until 18, they shouldn't be forced into coparenting with teachers or government. Most parents deeply love their children and want what's best for them. The central unit of a strong society is the family and we should have public policies that help parents raise their children free of government interference (to the extent reasonably possible)
Taxpayer funds should be used to provide gender transition services.
Strongly Disagree
It doesn't appear gender transition services have a positive impact on patients. Not only should tax funds not be used to provide them, there appears to be increasing evidence to support that the providers giving the gender transition services should be outlawed from doing so. The long-term impact of gender transition services on anyone under 18 is almost universally a long-term tragedy.
Marriage is a God-ordained, sacred and legal union of one man and one woman. No government has the authority to alter this definition.
Agree
I do believe Marriage is a God-ordained, sacred union between one man and one woman for the purpose of creating families. As a believer in individualism, I think if people want to call something else marriage, that's their right. In current times people seem to take marriage to mean a loving and committed relationship between two adults; even if the legal definition changes, God's definition doesn't change.
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
Until almost 30 I was an active member of the Mormon faith. I actively participated in service 10-15 hours/week for most of my life. I generally prayed at least five times a day, attended services on Sunday, and participated in the LDS faith's formal religious instruction program. I am a four year graduate of the Seminary program and have 15 college credits from the LDS Institute of Religion. My first wife and I were married in the Palmyra, NY temple. While I was married to her, she fell away from the church and I felt like God wouldn't want me to abandon my wife simply because she stopped believing in the LDS faith. While I no longer practice the Mormon faith, I am deeply grateful for the knowledge and wisdom my faith provides.
ELECTIONS AND VOTING
People should be able to vote without photo identification.
Strongly Disagree
States should join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact which makes the Electoral College irrelevant.
Strongly Disagree
I couldn't possibly disagree with this more.
EQUALITY
Is racism a threat to domestic security in the United States? Why or why not?
Twenty years ago I would have said no, but the current obsession with fanning the flames of racism obviously is a threat to domestic security. The 2020 riots and BLM "protests" absolutely caused death and destruction.
I agree with Critical Race Theory (CRT) which asserts that the institutions in the United States are fundamentally racist.
Strongly Disagree
CRT is a lazy and deeply flawed way of looking at the world. CRT is a byproduct of a failing higher education system that allowed a very divisive set of thoughts to get far more air than it deserved. CRT lead to folks like Ibrahm X Kendi publishing vitriol like "the only solution for past racism, is present racism" and a lot of other junk ideologies. Unfortunately, the Racial Industrial Complex is a live and well.
Biological males should not be allowed to participate in women's sports or occupy biological women's spaces whether it be bathrooms, locker rooms, sorority houses, women's shelters, or prison.
Strongly Agree
ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT
Which comes closest to your view? (Select all that apply) A) Stricter environmental laws and regulations cost too many jobs and hurt the economy. B) Stricter environmental laws and regulations are worth the cost. C) Stricter environmental laws undermine U.S. energy independence and deter development of reliable electricity sources. D) Climate change is real and requires urgent policy action.
C is the closest. I'm an engineer at heart and I think if there is a real climate concern, making energy to expensive for poor people isn't the way to solve it. It's really unfortunate that the Department of Energy is so rabidly against nuclear power (especially given newer technologies can't explode, provide clean power, and provide ample cheap power).
What do you believe is the most reliable energy source that will supply the growing demand for electricity?
Nuclear!
ABOUT YOU
Have you ever been penalized for sexual misconduct in either civil or criminal court? If so, please explain.
No.
Have you ever been convicted of a felony? If so, please explain.
No.
What do you think is the general purpose of government?
Protect and serve the citizens. Some aspects of modern living are much more suited for government than private enterprise. There was a king in the Book of Mormon that was loved by his people, why? He wasn't a burden on them! He supported himself on his own effort and truly served his people. I realize that's a bit of a simplistic take, but there is something beautiful about the idea of government made of people who deeply wish to serve their community.
When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?
Conservative
CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY
I support redirecting funds from police departments to community programs.
Strongly Disagree
I think we need to be mindful of the way we're spending funds, but if we need money for police then we need money for police. If community programs can reduce the amount of funds police need, then we should establish that they community programs are working before we do anything else. The reduction in funding to police departments has made the profession even more demanding for those that stay in it and has pushed a lot of officers out of public safety.
2ND AMENDMENT
What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?
I believe that the prohibition on felons owning firearms is reasonable, but I am a fan of constitutional carry. The government should not restrict the ability of a private citizen to defend themselves, their family, or their community. I think NV should repeal the prohibition on private firearm sales. I'm VERY pro gun.
Should teachers be allowed to carry guns at school?
Yes
I believe there should be policies and procedures in place that allow them to, but they really shouldn't have to. I am hugely in support of allowing schools to hire private armed security. We have armed security where we want to keep people safe; why don't we allow schools to hire private armed security?
