QUESTIONNAIRE

RIGHT TO LIFE

Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive taxpayer funds from federal, state, or local governments (including Title X grants).

Disagree

While I don't want there to be any abortions needed, it is a medical procedure and should be safely and properly supported.

Under what circumstances should an elective abortion be allowed?

Cases of rape or risk to the life of the mother.

Human life deserves legal protection from conception until natural death.

Neutral

This is the heart of the debate. This kind of question isn't addressing the difficult matter but instead makes it an emotional issue.

The lives of human embryos created through artificial methods ought to be protected from purposeful destruction.

Neutral

IVF is an important medical procedure for couples seeking to make a family. Some of the embryos will not be viable.

The Comstock Act, which bans interstate transportation of abortion-inducing drugs, should be enforced.

Neutral

The Comstock Act is far more than just abortion drugs. This question is misleading in that it tries to make it only about abortion drugs. The law needs to be appropriately enforced on its merits across the board. Not just about abortion drugs.

ECONOMY

What is your position on the minimum wage?

It needs to be raised. At least $15 an hour. The country is far behind the times and needs of its people.

Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.

Agree

List your top 3-5 priorities to eliminate government waste.

Focusing on procurement consolidation, eliminating wasteful earmarks and corporate welfare, cutting non-essential grants, and improving oversight, the U.S. and Texas could significantly reduce waste.

RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

What does "separation of church and state" mean to you?

The state cannot favor one religion over another.

Individuals and businesses should be required to provide services even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.

Neutral

Again this is a nuanced idea that is being asked as if it is a binary answer. As a rule, if someone is in business they can not discriminate. On the other hand, they should have the ability to deny service. The issue is when those services are denied because of who someone is, not because of bad actions.

HEALTHCARE

What most closely matches your view on healthcare: A) Healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare option. (includes "universal healthcare," "medicare for all," etc.) B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options. C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary. D) Taxpayer funded health care should be abolished in all forms, and Medicaid and Medicare should be defunded.

B

The government should keep a database of people with various ongoing medical illnesses to assess the economic burden of treatment.

Strongly Disagree

This is a clear violation of privacy and HIPPA laws.

NATIONAL SECURITY

The Chinese Communist Party poses serious military, cyber security, intellectual property, and global economic threats to the United States.

Agree

They are a major power and a potential threat. Ongoing diplomacy and strong defense capabilities are important.

Is the United States' relationship with Israel important, and if so why?

It is important because of long standing relationships. That said, the US should make certain its own interests are not subservient to those of any other nation.

IMMIGRATION

I support the existence of sanctuary cities to protect undocumented persons.

Neutral

This is a misleading question. The issue is that immigration laws need to be enforced, but in a humane and legal fashion. Law enforcement should cooperate.

EDUCATION

I support eliminating the U.S. Department of Education and giving control back to states and communities.

Strongly Disagree

The DoE has a role to play in seeing to it that basic educational formats are consistent among the states.

Foreign governments should be prohibited from funding American education.

Neutral

I'm not even sure what this question is getting at. If they are funding foreign students (their citizens) it's OK.

VALUES

Government should recognize and support the fundamental right and essential duty of parents to direct their child's health and educational well-being.

Agree

Parents are the primary support for thier children.

Attempts to physically or socially transition a child to the opposite sex constitute child abuse.

Disagree

Again, a question that is not addressing the issues or providing a nuanced understanding of the situation. This is a complicated issue that needs to be handled by parents, medical professionals, and the child in question.

Marriage is a God-ordained, sacred and legal union of one man and one woman. No government has the authority to alter this definition.

Disagree

Any two consenting adults can merge their lives and money. The government only has a role in the legal contract of between the parties. The religious aspect of marriage it up to the participants and their religious communities.

I support the expansion of gambling in my state.

Neutral

The income from gambling can be good for business. The challenges of the gambling world and the related culture and businesses can be problematic. If carefully regulated it can be OK.

Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.

I was raised Episcopalian and hold those values as a strong foundation for my approach to life. I've also learned a great deal about other faiths and apply the best teachings from many of them in my life.

ELECTIONS AND VOTING

People should be able to vote without photo identification.

Neutral

Poorly worded question. If the government will provide a way for all citizens to obtain an ID at no cost and easily accessible it is fine. The problem is under the current system; it is a de facto poll tax. This is not a simple problem and will need a creative solution.

EQUALITY

Reparations should be given to people on the basis of race.

Disagree

That said, underserved and underrepresented communities need more resources so they can better their lives.

Biological males should not be allowed to participate in women's sports or occupy biological women's spaces whether it be bathrooms, locker rooms, sorority houses, women's shelters, or prison.

Neutral

It depends on so many variables and situations. Levels of the sports, have they fully transitioned, etc. Also, this is a very small part of society, and those citizens have rights to live free as well. People need to be protected.

ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT

Man-made climate change is a global threat and requires urgent political action.

Agree

What do you believe is the most reliable energy source that will supply the growing demand for electricity?

We need to draw on all available energy sources. Also, we need to put more research into renewable energy sources so they can be more efficient.

ABOUT YOU

When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?

Moderate

Have you ever been penalized for sexual misconduct in either civil or criminal court? If so, please explain.

No

Have you ever been convicted of a felony? If so, please explain.

No

CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY

What should be the goal of the criminal justice system?

To enforce the laws, protect the people, dismantle criminal enterprises, and rehabilitate those who have committed crimes.

Government has a responsibility to protect children from sexual exploitation during online activities.

Strongly Agree

Sharia law should not be accepted or incorporated in any form within the legal framework of the United States.

Strongly Agree

The Constitution is the supreme law of the land. There are no Sharia courts or anything like it. This is a ridiculous idea and one that only serves to create fear and mistrust. A false boogeyman to frighten and manipulate people and secure votes.

2ND AMENDMENT

What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?

We need sensible and responsible gun laws. I'm retired law enforcement and own several firearms. That said, there need to be checks and training as part of the responsibility of gun ownership. "Well Regulated' is in the amendment as well.
