QUESTIONNAIRE
RIGHT TO LIFE
Human life deserves legal protection from conception until natural death.
Choose not to answer
"...deserves legal protection..." is a broadly worded statement
What role should the school serve in helping a student with an unwanted or crisis pregnancy?
Public school personnel and parents must maintain a partnership relationship. Thus, the school has a duty to inform the parent of any information that may risk the health, well-being and/or life of the student. If the school determines that the parent/guardian requests additional help, the school should provide the parent/guardian with referral information about public support services.
ECONOMY
It is the government’s responsibility to ensure everyone has a livable income.
Neutral
I believe it is the government's responsibility to form a more perfect union, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity. To that end, I believe the government should provide human support services, model the appropriate response and provide supports for the sick, the disabled, the oppressed, etc.
What is your position on government funding of public education from Pre-K through college?
The Texas Constitution establishes the state government as the funding mechanism for public education. This is arguably the state government's most important role: to ensure a robust public education system that creates a better future for students and ultimately the economic well-being of Texas. Pre K and college were also included in this question. As our American society evolves, the more we can extend this investment to Pre K and college, the better for students and Texas.
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
The Ten Commandments should not be displayed in public school buildings or court houses.
Strongly Agree
I believe in the Establishment Clause.
At school, students should be able to speak freely and civilly about matters of conscience and faith, including Christianity.
Strongly Agree
Public schools should and do foster cultures of inclusivity and diversity. Hence student expression of these important aspects of the human condition serve to edify learning and create awareness/acceptance of human differences.
Teachers should be required to instruct students on mandated curriculum even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.
Choose not to answer
Public school curriculum is the result of extensive collaboration and significant vetting before it becomes mandated. Thus violations of moral and/or religious beliefs would be rare and processes are in place that allow teachers to appeal such concerns. Local school boards can ultimately resolve these violations.
NATIONAL SECURITY
Is the United States' relationship with Israel important, and if so why?
Yes- the alliance between the two countries and the history of the Jewish people forge an important relationship that we should continue to cultivate.
The best way to maintain peace is through a strong military.
Neutral
The best way to achieve peace is through dialogue and diplomacy. Diplomacy best serves the people. A strong military is important, especially as a deterrent to armed conflict.
EDUCATION
I support eliminating the U.S. Department of Education and giving control back to states and communities.
Strongly Disagree
As a public school educator of 40 years, never did I view the Department of Education as controlling or politically driven. Instead, the department provides invaluable support through collecting and disseminating research, prohibiting discrimination, establishing financial aid policy, directing scholar programs, etc.
The state should fund education by allowing dollars to follow the child instead of the bureaucracy, through a program which allows parents the freedom to choose their child's school – public, private, or homeschool.
Disagree
Education funding already allows dollars to flow to charter school programs. In turn, charter schools must comply with state regulation and oversight. This money should not flow to private schools as these programs have an established funding source and consequently are not subject to oversight. I also do not support mitigating tuition costs to families who choose private schools for their child's education.
Which type of written parental consent should be obtained before students are taught courses such as Comprehensive Sex Education (CSE)? (A) Opt-In. (B) Opt-Out. (C) None.
Did not answer
Abortion and gender-affirming providers, including Planned Parenthood, should be a resource for instruction or services in the school.
Strongly Disagree
Matters concerning abortion and gender affirming care are private, family matters in which the school should not guide. In cases where parental support is absent or does not exist, the school should partner with child or adult protective services.
