RIGHT TO LIFE
Under what circumstances should an elective abortion be allowed?
I am personally pro-life, grounded by my faith, and I would legislate as a pro-life Senator. Being pro-life means fostering a culture of life in my community, North Carolina as a state, and more broadly in the culture. Our newly passed 12-week limit on elective abortions is the most pro-life legislation in the state in over 50 years. I will do everything in my power to defend that law, continue fostering a culture of life, and providing women with options, reducing the number elective abortions.
Chemical abortion drugs should meet essential safety standards (such as in-person consultation with a medical doctor) and require reporting to gather evidence on reactions and outcomes.
Strongly Agree
I support 'aid in dying' laws which legalize assisted suicide and euthanasia.
Strongly Disagree
Abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, should not receive taxpayer funds from federal, state, or local governments (including Title X grants).
Strongly Agree
ECONOMY
Free enterprise and the right to private property are essential elements of a productive economic system.
Strongly Agree
What is your position on the minimum wage?
My small business works on connecting employers with quality employees, placing people in good jobs. In my experience, employers aren't paying entry-level employees minimum wage any more due to out-of-control inflation under the Biden administration.
Should environmental and social issues, like ESG (environmental, social, and governance) ratings, be used as criteria in deciding where to invest public monies?
No
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
Under what circumstances can government close churches?
The U.S. Constitution is clear: our First Amendment rights are absolute. Government has no authority, under any circumstances, to close churches. Roy Cooper violated the Constitution when he did so.
Individuals and businesses should be required to provide services even if it would violate their moral and/or religious beliefs.
Strongly Disagree
Should religious schools which accept state funds be allowed to only admit families and students who agree to adhere to their statement of faith?
Yes
HEALTHCARE
What most closely matches your view on healthcare: A) Healthcare for all should be guaranteed and funded by the government with no private healthcare option. (includes "universal healthcare," "medicare for all," etc.) B) Healthcare insurance funded by the government should be available for all who want it, along with private healthcare options. C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary. D) Taxpayer funded health care should be abolished in all forms, and Medicaid and Medicare should be defunded.
C) Medicaid and Medicare should remain available, but no other taxpayer-funded programs are necessary.
Under what circumstances (if any) should a government, school, or employer be allowed to require vaccinations?
Governments should never be allowed to require vaccinations. Schools and employers are more nuanced since this includes private institutions which can enter into contracts with students or employees. But there should always be religious exceptions.
NATIONAL SECURITY
The Chinese Communist Party poses serious military, cyber security, intellectual property, and global economic threats to the United States.
Strongly Agree
Is the United States' relationship with Israel important, and if so why?
Yes, America's relationship with Israel is very important. Israel is the only functioning democracy in the Middle East, our long-time alley, an important economic partner, and a strategic and vital military partner.
EDUCATION
The state should fund education by allowing dollars to follow the child through programs which protect parents' freedom to choose their child's school – public, private, or homeschool.
Strongly Agree
VALUES
Taxpayer funds should be used to provide gender transition services.
Strongly Disagree
No healthcare diagnosis or treatment, whether mental, reproductive, or otherwise, should be given to a child without first receiving written consent from the parent unless an emergency situation arises risking immediate death.
Agree
I agree with the premise here, but "immediate death" is subjective and, obviously, could lead to very dangerous situations. I would define emergency situations clearly and state that this exception would hold for situations risking death or the loss of a major bodily function.
Children are the most vulnerable members of society and must be protected from abuse, including gender ideology, grooming, and bodily mutilation.
Strongly Agree
Marriage is a God-ordained, sacred and legal union of one man and one woman. No government has the authority to alter this definition.
Neutral
Yes, marriage as it is defined in Scripture is a sacred union of one man and one woman. However, for any society governed by the rule of law, there has to be a legal definition of marriage. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled on this topic.
Briefly describe your spiritual beliefs and values.
I have a personal relationship with God and a member of St Gabriel Catholic Church. My faith informs every aspect of and decision in my life – and teaches me that every person is to be treated with dignity, and I am to provide grace.
ELECTIONS AND VOTING
Voting absentee by mail ballot should be limited to those meeting at least one of the following criteria: 1) 65 years of age or older on Election Day, 2) sick or disabled, 3) expecting to give birth within three weeks before or after Election Day, or 4) confirmed to be absent from the county of registration during voting.
Disagree
President Trump voted absentee by mail in the last election. States have to do a better job eliminating fraud, verifying and securing ballots.
EQUALITY
Is racism a threat to domestic security in the United States? Why or why not?
Of course racism exists in the U.S. as it exists in any country. There are individuals who hold racist or objectionable views in all countries. But I do not believe racism is a domestic security threat to the U.S.
I agree with Critical Race Theory (CRT) which asserts that the institutions in the United States are fundamentally racist.
Strongly Disagree
Biological males should not be allowed to participate in women's sports or occupy biological women's spaces whether it be bathrooms, locker rooms, sorority houses, women's shelters, or prison.
Strongly Agree
ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT
Which comes closest to your view? (Select all that apply) A) Stricter environmental laws and regulations cost too many jobs and hurt the economy. B) Stricter environmental laws and regulations are worth the cost. C) Stricter environmental laws undermine U.S. energy independence and deter development of reliable electricity sources. D) Climate change is real and requires urgent policy action.
A) and C). Climate change is real. The question is, what government policies - if any - are appropriate for dealing with it, without sacrificing jobs and economic growth. I believe that the private sector will continue producing innovative solutions that protect the environment without sinking the economy, so long as the government gets out of the way.
ABOUT YOU
What do you think is the general purpose of government?
The general purpose of government is to provide security for individuals, families, and businesses so they can prosper, live freely, and participate in the free market. Under the state constitution, North Carolina's government is charged with giving children the opportunity to learn in K-12 schools, community colleges, and universities. And of course, federal, state, and local governments work together on public goods such as the transportation network.
Have you ever been convicted of a felony? If so, please explain.
No
Have you ever been penalized for sexual misconduct in either civil or criminal court? If so, please explain.
No
When you consider your views on a wide range of issues from economic and social matters to foreign policy and religious liberty, which of the following best describes you overall?
Conservative
CRIMINAL JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY
I support redirecting funds from police departments to community programs.
Strongly Disagree
2ND AMENDMENT
What restrictions on gun ownership are needed to protect public safety?
I'm a strong supporter of the Second Amendment and believe it is a foundational freedom in this country. I believe that gun ownership should only be restricted for people who are dangerous (severe mental illness, convicted and violent felons, domestic abusers, etc.) after due process has been followed.
